Title: You get 1 year to dedicate yourself to learning something new...
Post by: CHONGS on April 29, 2013, 08:44:52 AM
...what do you teach yourself?  Imagine you don't have to work, no distractions and access to any materials you need.  What 1 subject/craft do you teach yourself and why?

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I think I would like to learn how to play the piano, but then again it would be really useful to learn how to carpenter things really well (not like that farmers market garbage, I mean good stuff).

I think languages would be the most useful/helpful for me, but I would really want to become badass at playing musical instruments.

german then french then portugese then spanish. I used to think it would be most helpful to know mandarin but a guy in my office from china said that I'd be wasting my time and it would take tons of years for anyone from china to understand what I was trying to say because the language is hard as crap.

Language would be a good one, took 2 years of german in high school and would love to just be dropped in germany for 1 year.

Carpentry is a good answer as well but sounds like it would take alot of work.

What about sports? I'm thinking that with an entire year to train I could probably take a crap ton of steriods and POSSIBLY get good enough to be a 5 Heart special teams player for the cats.

I'm torn between fishing and carpentry. I want to lean towards fishing, but I think a year would be overkill. I think carpentry might be a better use of the full year. On the other hand, it will be awhile before I'd have the ability to have a full shop to do carpentry right, but I can always find a place for a couple of boats and fishing equipment.  :dunno:

Sex. I know, some of you will choose to make fun of me and try to convince everyone on here how great you are in the sack. I can type your response for you: "I am already great at sex. I don't need to work on it for a year. The lady's love me. Dobber must suck at sex. Sucks to be him. Sucks to be dobber's wife."

Now, I'll ask you to be serious. Are you really great at sex? Don't you think you could improve just a little bit? Wouldn't it be great to work on it full time for 1 year?

Thank you for your consideration.

Is this supposed to be something that it is actually possible to get good at in only 1 year? Or just in your fantasy land mind you would be good after 1 year of practicing it? Or just something that you want to practice for 1 year regardless or whether you are really great at it by the end of the year?

Like, some of these things people are saying I don't think you would be really awesome at it after only 1 year of practice.

Can my one thing be a bunch of things?  I mean, it would be nice to be a general handyman. Like, spend my year learning from a guy. Broken sink, got it, install a plug, no problem, build a small fence/gate, you betcha. If I tried any of these things right now there would be wet, burnt, bloody fingers all over the place. Sure, I just pay people to do these things now, but it would be nice to not have to.

The idea is that you would work on it for 40 hours per week or so, rather than work your full time job. I think 1 year is plenty of time to get good at just about everything mentioned in that scenario.

You are dedicating yourself. That doesn't mean that you are just teaching yourself and shutting out all outside help in learning your craft. That would just be dumb.

If it is a physical activity then it is going to get really tiring doing it 40 hours per week for a whole year. But then again I'd be in really good shape after that year probably. There is some point at which practicing more of the same thing just isn't beneficial.

Actually I'm thinking of the martial arts ones. Like if you are going to be practicing it full time for a year you might want to practice with different "sparring partners". I mean it might be boring with the same partner all the time. And then is your regular "sparring partner" going to get jealous if you practice with other people? You would probably get better faster if you practiced with multiple different partners. And you definitely need to practice with people of the same and opposite gender to get good at everything. Probably multiple partners at once too.

I am thinking auto mechanic is the way to go for me since I do want to restore my old truck.  Already know I have zero musical talent so it probably wouldn't matter how much I tried I probably wouldn't end up being that much more than pretty good.

Cheffing and Handyman would both be decent but I would consider myself pretty darn good at both already.  There really isn't much more I would ever need to fix or build around my house I cant already do.  Hardcore woodworking would be sweet though and it seems like old guys that do this seem to really enjoy it.

Basically my view is that in 1 year I could get really good at whatever I decide to do to.  At that point I would be good enough to make money off it, but also know that I dont think mechanic, woodworker, musician, chef etc are a career I would like because I already have chosen not to do them.  I would be looking at a great hobby I could complete at a high level.  So my long winded answer is restoring old cars.

I'd train to be one of those Cirque du Soleil performers. Maybe one that does acrobatic things with the hanging drapey cloth and ropes.

No, I agree with Mrs. Gooch's earlier point that you can only get so good at many things in year.  Top athletes, for example condition their bodies for many years.  You can't expedite physiology just because you have a lot of time on your hands.  And with things like piano, concert pianists practice like six to eight hours a day for many years.  The point is that, even if you don't aspire to be BITB, there are limitations.

Oh, and another excellent point about physical training by me is that rest is often a required part of the regimen.  Going all out all of the time often isn't as productive in the long run as following a plan that includes days of rest that allow your body to heal and get stronger.

You aren't going to be a concert pianist with 1 year of training, but you could definitely get good enough to play at bars and parties.

Parties yes, bars probably not. Piano has a much slower learning curve than guitar. Sorry. :frown:

I think a year (full time) should be enough to get competent. You won't be great or anything, but you will be able to play a few songs well and have enough of a base to keep learning by reduced practice time.  I guess in other words, this year would provide the base that 99% of the population never gets, and that IMO is often the biggest hurdle to learning something new and retaining it.

We have plenty of time 8mp.  I'm thinking we start practicing in like late May of 2016.  By that July we'll be handball masters.

Oh and don't worry about ksc, he's just not naturally gifted at anything at all so he likes to belittle everyone else's dreams in hopes that they don't actually win multiple gold medals in sports they just started playing and subsequently leave him behind.

I was asking a real non-sarcastic question. You would want to commit a whole year to nothing but this specific activity but your current situation doesn't allow it - and I was just wondering what in your current situation didn't allow it.

I wasn't trying to say "Hey fat asses why don't you get off your lazy asses and just do this thing after work everyday and neglect your family."

If it is a physical activity then it is going to get really tiring doing it 40 hours per week for a whole year. But then again I'd be in really good shape after that year probably. There is some point at which practicing more of the same thing just isn't beneficial.
