Post by: steve dave on April 25, 2013, 11:45:10 AM
So, as most of you know I am a life planner by trade. In this thread you can ask me questions and I will direct you in your life. The questions can be about anything but I won't promise to answer them all.

What, in your opinion, is the optimal age to get married? How long after being married should you wait to have kids? How many days should I binge per week?

there is no optimal age/waiting period for marriage/kids independant of thousands of other factors. 3 days.

Add on to this- At what age is binging 3 nights a week no longer OK?  2 nights?  Or is it based on other factors like getting married or having kids?

SD, I'd really appreciate it if you could keep your life planning, financial advice, travel agent and credit card advice in different threads. I understand you wear many hats but as someone who uses you for all of the above I'd just like a systematic way to find where my decisions have been made for me.

Unless, of course, as my life planner you decide I should just have my advice scattered everywhere. Your call, bro.

I recently turned 30. What are 2 achievable goals I should set for myself to achieve before I hit 40?

visit all continents other than Antarctica. do something very difficult that benefits someone other than yourself.

Question:

I've visited several already (North America for example, also Europe and Australia). Do those count or do I need to re-visit them in order for this goal to be completed?

would you feel complete after just finishing them off or would you feel better by starting fresh and hitting them all in one go?

You have really great life coach skills Steve Dave! Asking the questions that get to the heart of what someone desires! I think due to my current life situation and having kids, the goal of knocking out South America, Africa, and Asia seems totally doable by 40, but starting over and going to all of them by 40 seems daunting to me personally. My current job doesn't allow for tons of travel, and I'd like to go places around the USA too!

Would I have set this goal without this thread? Probs not. Am I beginning to collect points and miles in order to achieve this goal? Yes. Yes I am. Would I have ever started doing that without goEMAW.com? Maybe, but doubtful.

Thanks goEMAW, from my heart to yours!

SD-

I'm really starting to jump on the Royals Bandwagon but I have a problem. I've gone to 3-4 game a year for the past couple of years and the royals have never won any of those games.

I really want to attend some games this year and soak up the atmosphere at the K but I dont want to curse the team.

Advice?

Here's the thing on jobs: it is cool to pour yourself in to something and succeed.  It feels great.  That said, keep your eyes on what you want several yrs from now.

What I am getting at is that you can work 12hrs a day and kick ass and stuff and get promoted and everything and that is fine, but promotions come based on what your employer thinks you can do going forward given your work habits.  So if you work 12 hrs a day to get that job, that same level of dedication will be expected of you once you have that job, if not more.  At no point, that I am aware of, do you finally get to a point where you have been promoted to a job where you get to back down to a level of effort less than what you gave to get that job.

I probably described this poorly, but be aware.  When setting the world on fire, you have to keep feeding the flames otherwise they will burn your ass up.

So fast forward to where you want to be in several yrs.  Does that point in your life still give you room to put as much emphasis on your job then as you are talking about doing now?  Wife, kids, soccer and tball games, etc.  All that crap takes time.  Lots of it, and future you needs to be aware of the hole that present you may be digging.

I am a 21 year old male basketball player at a Kansas college who just won the Big 12 conference regular season title (shared) and made it to the championship game in the Big 12 tournament.  We unfortunately flamed out in the first round of the NCAA tournament and my coach looked like a fool following that loss.  I played pretty poorly in that game also but I had a pretty great year and made some post season all Big 12 teams.  Thing is, my current coach wasn't the one who recruited me and, even though I am likely to be one of the top returning players in this conference and will have a chance to really showcase my skills next season, I also want to be closer to home where my mother is struggling to raise my 2 younger brothers.  What should I do?  Do you need any more info to help me?

PS.  Home is the island of Puerto Rico where there are no Div I schools that play men's basketball.

I am looking to meet a female companion, but haven't been on a date in a really long time.  I'm also very shy.  How do I proceed?

deets:  live in manhattan, go to school with a bunch of people way younger than me, go to bars with lots of people that are moderately younger than me

-thanks, seven

Not SD (obviously), but I'll do my level best...

Have you checked out the University For Man?  They offer cooking classes; you can rent a plot in the Community Garden (there are 165 plots, so lots of people to meet all summer long); etc.

Do any of the wine stores in MHK have tasting nights?  Best not to be the creepy guy who is ALWAYS there, but check it out once.

The Manhattan Public Library has lots of free events for adults.  It's best if they're recurring of course.

Ultimately, the key is just being yourself.  It helps if you can find something to do that you're interested in, because that will make you more interesting to others.

Gosh it really sucks that you guys didn't get to SD soon enough and be his number one life planning client. You will just have to wait until tomorrow to hear back, I just texted him and he got right back to me. Welp, later, losers.

i love to travel, always have, got half the union and 8 countries on my passport.  But the current love of my life has really bad travel anxiety problems.  she blames it on getting "motion sickness" (and thus won't stomach the idea of being treated for anxiety) which maybe some of it is, but its definitely more in line with agoraphobia-type symptoms (but i'm no doctor)   I used to think just practice makes perfect and the occasional xanax could get us through any travel hardships, but a recent trip for our 2 year made me question the feasibility of that strategy.  Where do i start?

The best hobby to make you more valuable is one you enjoy doing.

I only know what you have posted but I agree that seeing a doctor sounds like her best option.

This sounds like the set-up for a sitcom.  Unfortunately, life doesn't wrap up neatly in 30 minutes.  You need to cost-benefit analysis WITH your wife how you traveling (and her not traveling) will impact you guys.  If one budges a little either way with leeway for solo travel or travel together, take it and run with it.

Also, with kids this will get worse (less good travel, more bad travel) not better.

SD,

Should I become a K-State football fan? I hate, hate, hate the basketball program, but I at least respect the football program, and obviously think LHC Bill Snyder is the greatest. Being a fan would make watching games more fun, and I'd maybe buy a KSU shirt or something.

But I'd hate to give up making fun of KSU athletics.

Rake, don't do it.  Sure the next few years will be fun, but they would become that high that you will frustratingly spend the rest of your sports life chasing once Bill is gone.
