I have a 5 year old whirlpool side by side fridge/freezer. it no longer stops running. everything is frozen solid for the last 24 hours. vents are clear, cleaned out the tremendous amount of lint in the coils, the works really. still doesn't shut off. is there a quick fix or am I stuck paying a guy to come fix it?
-
it's broken. you have to sell it on craigslist and buy a new one.
-
its just working really well you whiner
-
plus, have you tried turning it off and on?
-
It will be $90 to answer this question and another $150 to fix the problem.
-
How did Steve dave let anything in his house get to be five years old?

good ?uestion chum1

Is the coil still frosted over? Are there drain lines for the mechanics, are they clear? What about the drain line from the freezer down?
-
drain lines!
-
drain lines: no idea what/where those are :frown:
-
Thermostat probs. Thermostat gets satisfied when a certain temp is reached. If broken, the thermostat won't get satisfied and therefore won't switch off the cooling.
Just a guess. No clue how to fix it or anything.

On my side by side it is in the bottom of the freezer. Mine got frozen over, caused it to overwork, freeze up the compressor and foul everything up. I had to empty everything out of my freezer (luckily I had my garage fridge) and let it defrost. Than I poured hot water down the drain line with bleach to clean the line out. Under the fridge there was a pan which collects water from that drain line and any condensation off the compressor and condenser. Make sure that pan is clear, and the drain line is attached properly with no kinks, bends, or contact which could block the end.

never buy whoorpool, sumsung all the wayl

The drainage thing wouldn't explain why it keeps running, if in fact it keeps running.

Dude, that fridge is rough ridin' stupid. Glass doesn't insulate for crap and the cubic footage of that thing is probably similar to an igloo cooler.

my understanding is that it would if the compressor is half frozen straining to cool the unit.

Yes, you're right. Glass is routinely used to insulate and that fridge is clearly extremely spacious. Also, that is one freaking gigantic apple and those are ostrich eggs.

Since you're going to probably need to unplug it for an extended period of time to service the unit, it wouldn't hurt to try just unplugging it (you can take advantage of your perma cold freezer by freezing several plastic foot containers full of water and throwing them in a cooler with all your food which you should remove from the fridge whilst thawing to keep everything cold) Theres a chance that something is plugged/frozen up that could explain your problem.
If you fire it back up and it still wont shut off (toss a thermometer in there, it shouldn't go much below below 0F on most freezers) then you likely have a broken thermostat regulator. The good news is that this is one of the easier parts of a fridge to replace (if it were any part of the coolant system (compressor, coils leaking, etc) you'd probably just need to throw the thing out. The thermostat should just be a little electrical relay somewhere in the unit, if you google your specific make and model you should be able to get a youtube video of someone replacing it or at least a service manual (assuming you don't just save those sorts of things, since they gave you one when you bought it!) Using some combination of wrenches and drivers you should be able to access the offending thermostat. It'll have a couple wires running in an out of it that you should just be able to pull off the unit/decouple. At this point you'll be able to hook up a new thermostat/regulator that you've obtained from ebay/sears/the internets and put everything back together. It should function like normal, do the same tests as mentioned above.
Do not leave this thing running non-stop while you wait for the part to come in... take your food to your folks place/gfs/neighbors or eat it or chuck it, leaving that compressor running non-stop will burn up the motor and ruin the fridge. Which is an option, just go get a new one. Did you forget you are :kstategrad: ?
-
Have you tried kicking it steve dave? Try kicking it.
-
thermostat
<---- totally just fixed the level switch in the crappy GE washer because I'm leaving it here when we buy the new house
-
Thanks for the protips friends!
-
go out to eat every night. fridges are only used to keep your beverages cool.
-
Obv :kstategrad: wouldn't know this, call a Penn Valley or ISU grad for this type of work.

I'm with kim carnes. Stop being a broke loser steve dave, you stupid broke loser.

You should totally manipulate your AC neighbor into looking at it. Lots of same stuff involved.

I think you have to move

Leave it open and the temp will probably balance out. You are welcome. You can buy me a beer next time I see you.

so what was it?

Thermostat. Only took him about 20 minutes to switch it out. $265 which I didn't think was that bad.

I'll take $265 for writing out a step by step document on how to do this yourself, since you're just handing bills out, PM for mailing instructions
-
Well grats to CNS as well
-
Glad to see steve dave resolved this situation favorably. I had a fridge blow up a few years ago. Terribly expensive.

you're also going to have to go get the thermostat, drive to my house and do the labor on it. I don't pay the dorks that mow my yard to explain to me how to mow my own yard.

this is probably the best advice in this thread, i'm not sure though because i stopped reading after i got to this.

No, you pay other dorks $600/hr to install something that you could have done yourself

Yeah, I pay thousands if dollars for people to do all kinds if crap for me that I could do myself. Some day if you replace enough fridge parts you can too.

I'd probably be a millionaire if I changed my own oil too huh.

Time is worth something...as is having people do things right. It's how we make this economy function.

You are all making me feel really stupid for spending all that time getting an engineering degree.

so counter depth refrigerators are a bunch smaller and cost many times more than standard refrigerators?
