Title: Friends Selling You Stuff (Moved From ISU Butthurt Racist Thread)
Post by: EMAWmeister on February 27, 2013, 02:39:23 AM
There is a string of posts on this page that are making me really nervous about my future  :frown:. I don't want to be an annoying insurance salesman. But that's financial planning in a nutshell.

Welp, I just won't be annoying I 'spose?

You should probably do the honorable thing now and drop your friends right now before they drop you.  Fall on that sword.

In that case, you'll be a great Amway salesman someday.

I'm about to lose a friend to just regular old home/auto insurance sales. As soon as this crap is over I'm implementing a strict no sales from friends other than children 18 and under.

yep. had my daughter 2 years ago, hadnt talked to my buddy in a couple of months and he calls up all "hey man congrats mind if i talk to you about child life insurance"

scumbag

You won't necessarily lose any friends. Just don't call them and ask them to buy insurance from you. If they want to support you, they will realize that you are selling insurance and will contact you about it. You also have to realize that your insurance will not be the best or cheapest for everyone, and that you cannot hold a grudge against one of your friends who doesn't do business with you or switches away from your insurance.

Basically, be annoying to random people you meet because you have to sell, sell, sell. Just don't go for what you perceive as low hanging fruit (your friends) and alienate them in the process.

Quote from: dumbass ex-friends
It's not a job. It's a business. $200 to start your own business is peanuts. Sure, I haven't made that back yet, but the business eventually will take off and then I'll be rich. The guy I'm under just bought a brand new truck this year. Just come down to the convention in Louisville with me and I'm sure you will be convinced.

Also, don't tell your friends that they are irresponsible assholes if they choose not to carry life insurance when they don't even have a wife and kids.

It's not just about you here.

But I have had friends pay the hundreds (thousands?) of dollars to take the insurance "sales" classes to get "certified" and never actually sell anything or make any money.

Is it a firm or a scheme?  Cause insurance sales operate both ways.

You men have it easy. Try having a friend selling Pampered Chef or those fabric purse things or Premier Designs jewelry.

Not only are you expected to buy their crap at prices twice as high as what you would buy somewhere else, you're supposed to host "parties" to help your friend.
The worst.

I used to work for a company that sold insurance education products to people studying for their LH/PC insurance exams. Our biggest clients were the churn and burn insurance companies like Aflac and Primerica. Its pretty insane when you see these companies training over 1,000 "Agents" in a single state/metro every year.

I usually worked with the district managers and home office people but every once in a while I would have to talk to the actual student who was having trouble studying for the exam.....They were a treat.

Passion parties are also horrible and weird. But at least part of the party scheme is lots and lots of booze, because you have to be drunk to buy that stuff in front of your friends. (Or really at all.)

Welp, I just won't be annoying I 'spose?
no.  it's not.

yeah...let me rephrase that.  it's not if you do it right.  most "financial planners" are just glorified salesmen.  if you do it right, you're no more of a salesman than a cpa or attorney.  we've never called anyone asking for their business, we work purely on referrals, and we don't work with friends.  but yeah...if you work for an insurance company, you're going to be an insurance salesman.  and please, for the love of god, don't refer to yourself as a financial planner.

I should rephrase. The company that I want to work for deals in mostly planning, but they are a subsidiary of Guardian.

Yeah I had a friend that referred me to them. At the time I was super excited, because it is a well known company and an internship that practically fell into my lap, but I didn't want to badger my friend's parents/parent's friends and so I just took another summer job. Turns out the friend that referred me hated the whole thing and made very little from them that summer.

I've had 2 friends get involved in Quixstar. One was a guy from highschool who never went to college, he was in manhattan for a meeting and I actually went with him because I had not seen him in 1 year....Meeting goes like this

1. LOOK AT ALL THIS MONEY
2. Build your business!
3. Testimonial about how much money they make from person in crowd who was likely planted.
4. How much money do you want to make? GO MAKE IT!!!

The other guy who got caught up in it was pretty smart, graduated in bio/chem or something at KSU. He called me one night over the summer while I was slamming brews and playing video games. As soon as he told me what the business was I laughed in his face and told him to quit now.

that's not planning.  you'll be pushed to sell guardian policies regardless of whether they're the best for the client. trust me.  find a firm that's truly independent or find a different industry.

I had the same thing happen with NW Mutual.  Went in for the interview/recruiting scam because I figured interview experience wouldn't hurt, and at the end they asked for 10 names and numbers.  I gave them legit names, but changed the phone number by a digit.  The interviewer was a pretty hot ex-EMAW cheerleader though, so we talked 'Cats for a bit.

Got the Quixstar pitch three times.  First time was an interview for a "marketing/business internship" (pyramid scheme) the summer after my freshman year.  Second time, a college roommate got in to it and gave the pitch to me and the 2 other roommates as we  :dubious: and  at him.

The third time, and old high school friend/acquaintance asked me and another buddy to help him move some furniture pretty early on a Saturday morning.  This [redacted] had us move one couch across the room and maybe a chair, then sat us down and gave us some of the Quixstar sports drinks and tried to start in on the pitch.  We basically told him to eff off, and left right away.  Don't think I've talked to him since.

When my Quixtar friend came back from his conference in Kentucky, he completely stopped drinking because "people see you when you go out and they aren't going to buy your products if they know you drink." He also started going to church, which wouldn't have been a big deal except he was pretty much only doing it to meet potential clients.

Mods please merge this with the Vault Denim thread!!

Wife just got invited to one in a few weeks.  Gonna ruin someone's day when they start calling my house to have my wife host one.  Also, the person having the party has presented it as a "name brand stuff that fell off a truck" sale.

 :dunno:

Props to salespeople who have their crap together.  So many of them seem to be Glengarry Glen Ross desperate.  I feel bad for them.

interviewed for a job last year and was told that when i started i would be required to write down 300 names of people that i know. then i would have to call each one of those people.  :frown:
The worst is when some dumbass friend sells you out to his scheme boss and gives them our name and number.  I have had to tell several scheme masters to eff off on numerous occasions because I've associated with dumbasses.

I LOVE being sold to and crushing hopes and dreams.  I'll listen to the whole thing... I can see their eyes sparkle with the excitement of FINALLY finding THE one... THE sale... I've GOT this... and then the way their entire face almost melts off when I just mush the crap out of them at the end. And if their a friend I call them a dumbass and laugh in their face after becuase they should know better.

A lot of people (sluttily) throwing around the "friend" label in this thread, but if it's actually a friend then this is exactly how it ends.

She used to hook up with Ernie Pierce and Luis Colon. That's as EMAW as it gets, you guys.

Not a friend, but one time a guy showed up at the door saying one of my friends referred him. He was selling some kind of steam cleaner for carpets. I wasn't doing anything, so I let him give his presentation. He steam cleaned my entire living room, and then I told him that I just wasn't that impressed and asked him to leave. He was PISSED.

Send him over to steam a room for me.
