Was impressed with the meet.
Kynard wowed, put on a show. Was impressed with the other high jumper, too. And there were a few pretty good long jumpers. Overall it was pretty cool.
They have the Big 12 Indoor Championship this week on Friday and Saturday.

Pretty good conference indoor meet for KSU. While I haven't studied it that closely, it would appear that the men might be a couple of athletes away from a title town posting.
But that's always been a KSU track issue, so many years where just a couple of more athletes would have meant a trophy.

Low track recruiting IQ, are all Big II teams on equal footing benefits wise, are all track scholarship's partials?

I'm not sure.

no they aren't all partials, but for the most part yes they are. Essentially each school gets 12.5 for men and 18 for women T&F scholarships to split between not only the entire T&F team but the cross country team as well. It's completely up to the coaches how those are split.
-
Just looked through the Indoor Results.
A big fat Zero in the Men's:
(Day 2)
60
200
400
1000
1 Mile
3000
5000
60 Meter Hurdles
High Jump (Ouch, I mean OUCH!!) But good showings in Long and Triple Jump
Now, there could be a gazzillion reasons for this, but we didn't even have anyone even make participation ribbon status in the 60, 200, 400, 1000, 1 mile run, 3000, 5000. That's just a huge hole for not scoring, and yet the men still scored 95 points.
Admittedly I don't know enough about team make up to say why this happened.

Talked to a nicer girl once a few summers ago about track. She did her undergrad at UMich and came here to continue working on her sport (unsure if grad asst or what). My summary of the convo in reference to tge coach us that he is spectacular coach but doesnt recruit with emphatic energy. Not sure how accurate that is or if I misunderstood things.

Looks like Rovelto may have got the message from watching WBB and Tennis and Mens Golf coaching changes. His recruiting has really jumped up in the last year. There are some freshman on the squad already threatening school records. Akeyla Mitchell, Terrell Smith, etc, bright future I think :excited:

Is it possible that Cliff was influenced by the John Currie Traject-O-Meter?
I pine for the day that K-State builds a new indoor facility for football and converts the current indoor facility for football to an indoor track.

-
Women finish close second to UT in Big 12, men a dismal showing except in the high jump.
-
Getting tiresome to see the men languishing down in the middle of the pack or worse.
-
i've never seen a game where herrera didn't eff up
As in Kelvin?
-
So the K-State women finished 2nd at the B12 indoor, the men last. The women scored 4 points at the NCAA meet and the men 0 . . . a few weeks ago, I forgot to discuss this at the time.
-
So?
-
Just expect a little more.
And . . .
-
You have a solution?

Ya, do better, sounds good, right?

Yep

Thanks for the update dax

Women currently in 1st by 12.5 points on the last day of competition :surprised:

Let's see if they can pull it off. :crossfingers:
-
It's going to be close, but the Texas women have FIVE runners in the 200 finals, we have 1. It's always the damn numbers that kill us.
-
It's going to be close, but the Texas women have FIVE runners in the 200 finals, we have 1. It's always the damn numbers that kill us.
Yeah, it doesn't look good.
-
Texas just has too much right now going into the last 3 events. It may come down to the 4x400, but it could all be over in the 5000.
So close.
-
Best we can hope for is that Mitchell puts in the run of her life in the 200, and we pull out a points miracle in the 5000.
-
The men just have no final day horsepower, this gets old.
-
Texas scores 23 in the 200, takes the lead. 121.5 to 118.5. We score 6.
If we can pull out a miracle in the 5000, and another one in the 4x400 it may happen. Long shot tho
-
I just looked at the 5000. Barring cramps, it ain't happening.
-
Yeah, just not enough
-
The last gasp is a first place in the 4x400 and a dropped baton by Texas.
-
2nd, outnumbered again. Good effort.
-
Men next to last. It gets old seeing K-State men's track at the bottom.
-
Women's team ranked 10
Men's team ranked 22
Ho hum :kstategrad:
-
Honest question. If Cliff is such a stud track coach, why are his best results in field events? Track and field, afte all.
-
Once you get past the first few teams in the rankings it's basically participation ribbons.

I don't understand. Does this mean that we are not recruiting talented athletes? We just recruit average athletes?

Akela Jones is the real deal - she could score 20 points at the national meet by herself. That alone would likely put the team in the top 10.

Sorry I missed this. What I meant was we have a few stellar athletes and some filler, whereas schools with lots of success have an entire roster of stellar athletes. Our coach is still very well respected and people want to be coached by him, but it's almost like Cliff and CO would rather have a few great athletes to spend their time with than many with little time. /IknowIdontMakeSense

This post is pretty funny wrapped around edn's posts about recruiting.
Also Rovelto is a heralded high jump coach, javelin throwers aren't going to come to K-State solely based off of the fact that Rovelto has coached 3 Olympic high jumpers here.

I just had a nice conversation with a young lady who was a grad assistant a few years ago...made sense based on the individual success we've had versus team success.

I doubt it, but you can never tell with track. Looking over times/rankings it seems we're very good in field events but not good running events.

Yeah, IDK how well we'd do at the national competition, and so much rides on getting as much of your team qualified to be there to even get points. From the ranking that came out today (and unsure how rankings in track work, it seems to have some cumulative proprieties to it) we only moved up 1 spot after winning the Big 12 championship.
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/trackfield-outdoor-women/d1/ustfccca
And teams like Baylor and Texas are above us (though albeit just right above us).
I think though the exciting thing is Rovelto was happy we won it a year before he thought we'd be good enough to win it.
“I thought we were a year away because this is an extremely young team,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. “It is so hard to win a conference title. But this group did not want to wait a year. They wanted it now. They competed their guts out.”
So maybe next year will be pretty special
-
It's always a numbers game and a log jam at Nationals. You pull off just a few top finishes you're in the hunt.
-
Track and Field News bases its rankings on how they think individuals for schools will score at the national meet. They haven't updated since the weekend, but they had K-State tied for 9th in their last ranking. But, to get to the national meet, you have to qualify via regional meets and there are always some top 10 athletes who don't make it (injured, have a bad day, etc.)

Watching online and also watching the highlights. Absolutely embarrassing attendance in Lawrence.
-
I would be surprised if any track meet ever had more attendance than the participants' parents

Track meet attendance smack talk is a new low for Dax. Unless it's the Drake relays or nationals or something, nobody GAF. Followed my brothers track and cross country meets at ULM.

The last time Kstate hosted there was 3000 plus there.
It's a P5 conference championship track meet.
Of all the things to go angry Tuck on.
Sad
-

Why, because you don't like it?
Dax is right about that meet last weekend, I ran in high school meets with more people.
-
I watched some of the live streaming and the highlights and expected a championship meet at beautifully generic Rock Chalk Park with KU having a pretty good to very good track program. I expected to see a pretty decent crowd there, it's not that big.
Outside of the finals Sun night with a decent smattering of people clustered around the finish line. There was nobody there.
-
95% of track crowds are family and friends or middle school/HS track kids, but yes sometimes people show up. Not many track fans out there that just go to a meet to go to a meet.
-
I remember when track meets used to be significant events and fans used to attend. KU Relays were a really big deal in the 80s and before for example, now not so much. I don't think sports fans in general are that interested anymore.
-

Do you use ULM football games to make sweeping generalizations about football attendance trends?
-
No, because I've been to meets at Arkansas (power house program), Sun Belt conference meets, University of Wisconsin, KU, K-State, Big 12 meets, Drake Relays, Footlocker Championships, National Championships, etc. Attendance just isn't a big thing unless it's a major event and even then, it's mostly family and friends. It's just not a sport people come craving to watch for fun. I enjoy it because it was part of my life for so long, but there's not many people out there that want to watch a guy run 8 laps. It's got a NASCAR feel, minus the white trash.
-
Lol, it's not like I was expecting to see tens of 1000's of people jammed into the stadium. I just didn't expect the place to be empty.
Again, the last 2 times Kstate has hosted at peak times there was easily 3-4,000 people at RV Christian track.
There was 20,000 at the Pac 12 Championship.
-
track is boring so its not really a surprise that no one wants to watch it
-
Baseball is boring AF, lots of people still watch it.
-
don't compare baseball to track, that's beyond dumb
-
don't compare baseball to track, that's beyond dumb
Yes, I said it was exactly the same.
Once track meets start rolling through the finals on the last day, they can be very exciting. It looked like there was maybe 500 people at KU for the finals. All one side was completely empty. At a school with a good track heritage, with a men's team in contention for a title.
-
ok
-

But nearly everything you mentioned there is either a major event or at a place that takes T&F very seriously.
-
That's just my perception of growing up around it, is there would be some nice sized events, but nothing like i'd see like on Friday night lights. A huge sample of the ppl I met at these events were family members/friends, which made me always wonder where a sport like that would be without them. I met very few just casual fans at most of his events. Just my perception.
-
There was 20,000 at the Pac 12 Championship.
That's not a fair comparison since it was at Eugene. The birth of track and field, nike, and prefontaine. It's one of thee very few places that really appreciate the sport.
-

I didn't say nor even imply that there needed to be 20,000 in Lawrence. But the RCP track seats 4-5,000 people. There was about 500 give or take there.
It was the Big 12 Championship, KU has won conference titles, they have won national titles, their men's team was quite strong this year. I expected a little better showing at least for the finals on what appeared to be a beautiful evening.
-
That's fair
-
College conference track meets where you have a rooting interest in a team competing for the championship are very fun.

I hoping that when they convert the current Football indoor to the indoor track, that it looks half as elite as Arkansas' indoor track.

They aren't banking the track are they? That would would be an elite move. So, I assume not.

I don't know. They are estimating $13 million total and those tracks are about $2 to $3 million.

Arky and/or A&M would be nice to replicate. But, I imagine we'll dial it back and it'll be closer to Kentucky's (not bad, but not great either).
-
Given the number of indoor meets K-State has, I think they should put in a ramped track.

Gene will probably announce it as banked and build it flat.

Kynard finished fourth yesterday, so he won't be making the trip to Tokyo. On the women's side KSU alum Janee Kassanavoid was three inches short of finishing in third place in the hammer and making her first Olympic team. Unfortunately, zero K-State current athletes/alums will be competing for the U.S.
The rest of the teams around the world will be finalizing their rosters in the next few weeks and some athletes might compete for other countries. Many countries simply choose their athletes vs. the competition model the U.S. uses, so it's hard to say who might make their countries' respective teams.

Janee Kassanavoid finished second in the hammer at the US Championships last weekend, which means she'll be competing in the world championships in a couple of weeks (for the first time ever, the world championships will be held in the U.S. in the self-annointed "track town USA" aka Eugene). She's currently ranked sixth in the world and has a decent chance to medal.
The K-State SID folks suck with track, so hard to say if Kassanavoid will be the only alum competing, but the official start list should be up in another week or so.

My view of Eugene is that it received the hype of "Track Town" mostly because of comparisons to how much most of the other cities across the U.S. care about track (which is to say that, outside of a few annual events that draw well, most people don't care). Because Eugene "kind of" cared, it became the standard bearer in the U.S. (which still pales in comparison to most international cities that host major meets).
Eugene is also - by far - the smallest city to host a track world championship meet in the last 30 years.

I agree, no doubt those are all substantial factors and yes T&F is much bigger in Europe. American's are far too short attention span theater for most track and field meets.
-
The other piece is that if the IAAF was set on the meet being in the U.S., there are probably less than 10 Class 1 tracks in the country.
I went to a meet at Randall's Island in NY shortly after it opened in 2004 or 2005 and if I remember correctly, it was the only Class 1 track in the country at that time.

What would it take for the Cats to upgrade to an all-around elite CC and TF program? Good tradition in jumps, throws and combined events but lacking in elite sprinters and distance runners? Is it just a bad climate for sprinting in the Little Apple?

Relocating to a different state?
CC/T&F isn't fully funded, so the women's teams get 18 schollies and the men's teams get 12.6. So, you're dividing up those schollies among rosters of 30-40 athletes. The big population states have a massive advantage because they can offer in-state tuition and so if you're going to receive a quarter or half scholarship, that makes a big difference. If you're from Florida and have the choice between going to Florida on a 1/4 scholarship or K-State on a 3/4 scholarship, you're probably picking Florida because it's still cheaper, closer to home, etc.
So, there's that. Beyond that, I think Rovelto's approach somewhat makes sense in that you pick 1-2 events and try and be elite in those events. The problem is that the high jump isn't the best event to choose because it's not as much of a combo event as others. That's to say, an elite high jumper might be elite at another event, but that's not nearly as likely as an elite long jumper also being elite at the triple jump (which means one scholarship athlete scoring a lot of points in both events). Same thing for sprinters (100m/200m or 200m/400m or hurdlers, or throwers, etc.). Obviously, those combo athletes are the most highly desired, so it's tough.
There's also somewhat of a philosophical decision as it relates to competing at the national or conference level and which is more important. You can load up your roster with "pretty good" talent that can rack up points at a conference meet by finishing 4th-5th-6th-7th-8th, but also know that those athletes don't stand a chance at the national meet. Or, you can take the approach that the national meets matter more and throw most of your scholarships at elite athletes who can score nationally, but you probably won't do well at a conference meet because you've dumped all your scholarships into a small handful of athletes. Again, the large population states have the advantage because they can give an in-state kid a 1/4 scholarship and then give elite athletes 3/4 scholarships - a place like K-State doesn't have that luxury because there aren't a ton of elite in-state kids.
It certainly can be done, but if you look at the NCAA champions on the men's and women's sides in the last 10 years, it's mostly the same crop of schools - Florida, LSU, Oregon, A&M on the men's side and LSU, Texas, USC, Florida, Oregon on the women's side.
KU won the outdoor title on the women's side in 2013 - I don't remember for certain, but I think they had an elite sprinter, an elite thrower, a hep athlete and maybe a pole vaulter who scored most of the points for them.
Bottom line for me - it's possible, but it's always going to be an uphill challenge and it'll take a special coach like Rovelto to make it happen. That's why the indoor facility is key - there really are a limited number of elite indoor facilities around the country. If we can make ours elite and follow the Arkansas model, it could give us a huge boost.
-
Yeah, it's a simple issue about what we offer the athletes. I have friends who have a son who is a top cross country runner in the state, mom is a K-State grad and the kid has grown up in the Manhattan area, attending K-State sporting events. As of now, he's probably not going to run at K-State because they aren't offering much more than books. If the offer changes they'll consider K-State, they want him to run there, but right now it just doesn't make fiscal sense to do so.
-
Okay. Wow. That makes a lot of sense. I didn't realize the scholarship situation was like that.
-
What's the most scholarships men's and women's track teams can offer?
-
What's the most scholarships men's and women's track teams can offer?
The NCAA allows men's track/xc to only give the equivalent of 12.6 scholarships to be split among the entire team, women get 18. Some schools just evenly split among everyone, some give more to higher profile runners. Some even more are able to find more money outside of the scholarship limits.

I've been to a bunch of meets at Arkansas and there isn't a ton of seating - maybe 2,000-3,000 (at the absolute most). Based on these photos, we may not have quite enough space for that volume, but if we can get north of 1k, I think it'll be suitable to host quality meets (if not necessarily the national meet).
-
First meet in the new indoor facility in the books...
Small meet, but some quality teams (Miami, Tech, Mizzou). Hopefully we can expand/grow and host larger meets moving forward.
Men's 4x400m posts a legit time (currently No. 6 in the country) in breaking the school record.

He did a good job, put a few trophies of significance, but it was losing momentum quickly.
Overall budget aside, K-State has a nice suite of facilities and they're fundraising for an addition on the new indoor track for all new offices and dressing rooms. Obviously NIL now supersedes facilities, but facilities are still in play. Once that new addition is on, the suite of Olympic training center/sports med, refurbished outdoor, new indoor is a very good one.

Great article about Rovelto from today's KSSE. He has had a lot of success:
The Journey of a Coaching Legend
May 20, 2024 | Track & Field, Sports Extra
SHARE:
By: D. Scott Fritchen
He never planned to get into coaching. Cliff Rovelto, the Kansas State legend, and one of the most remarkable track and field coaches in the world, attended the University of Kansas as a political science major thinking he'd go to law school, and he took the LSAT, but ended up getting a degree in education in 1978. He taught history and civics. His favorite sport? Basketball. He served as assistant basketball coach at McLouth High School in Kansas, and they needed someone to coach track and field. And so began an unparalleled marriage between Rovelto and track and field, and cross country.
In two years, Rovelto coached six state champions, five state record-holders and one high school All-American.
What a journey it's been.
"It's hard," Rovelto says, taking off his glasses and wiping his eyes. "Sorry (pause). It's hard (pausing to wipe his eyes again). When you're at a place as long as I've been here (pause), and have had the relationships I've had with administrators and people you work with, athletes and coaches, it's really hard."
Last Tuesday, Rovelto announced plans to retire at the end of the 2024 outdoor track and field season after 32 seasons as K-State's director of cross country and track and field. He is the second-most tenured coach in K-State history, just behind the 34 years by Hall of Fame track coach Ward Haylett. He started his career in Manhattan in 1988 as an assistant coach, became head coach in 1992, and has been at K-State a total of 36 years. He orchestrated and built one of the top track and field and cross-country programs in college athletics with 17 NCAA Champions, and another 46 top-three finishes. There has been a total of 312 individual All-American honors and 186 conference champions.
Rovelto - 24 SE
So dominant is K-State in the men's and women's high jump that K-State has been regarded as "High Jump U," as the Wildcats have combined to capture 12 individual NCAA titles in the event during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
"The relationships, for sure, is the most important thing," Rovelto says. "I think there's been some pretty remarkable accomplishments that groups of athletes have accomplished, that teams have accomplished, and athletes over time. There are some things when you really look back at it it's pretty remarkable.
"Those things are all secondary to the relationships that you develop over time."
Rovelto has maintained relationships across the world. He has coached 17 individuals who've represented their countries at the Olympic Games 22 times, including gold medalist Erik Kynard (2012) and silver medalists Austra Skujyte (2004) and Matt Hemingway (2004). He has coached 23 individuals who've competed in 35 Outdoor World Championships, including three world indoor medalists and three world outdoor medalists, while coaching 42 USA National Champions.
Austra - 24 SE
One time, he and wife Karol stuck pins into countries and states that they've visited. He had visited more than 50 countries.
What a journey it's been.
When Rovelto officially announced his retirement in a news release last Tuesday at 11 a.m., his cellphone blew up.
"Within an hour I heard from probably 80 people," he says. "It was pretty — it was pretty overwhelming. Pretty emotional."
Rovelto stands inside the Vanier Family Football Complex, struggling to put his career and relationships into words.
"Thirty-six years," he says. "It's hard."
Education was always a big deal to Rovelto. He says that when he became head coach at K-State, the men's cumulative GPA was a 2.2. As of 2022, the men were at a 3.2 and the women were at above a 3.5. That was a big deal to him. He calls the assistance of the athletic department "phenomenal" and says, "I talk about education before anything athletically."
Rovelto-Kynard - 24 SE
Four Wildcats have been named Big 12 Scholar-Athletes of the Year since 2013 while the men's and women's teams have combined for more than 400 Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honors in the last 20 years.
Just as K-State made strides academically during Rovelto's tenure, it recently constructed an athletic crown jewel with its new indoor track and field complex that transitioned the original football indoor building into a new facility for track and field. K-State partnered with Mondo to provide the new indoor track surface. The 200-meter, six-lane oval, permanent banked track features Mondo's Super X 720 surface, which provides the optimal blend of energy return, comfort, safety and durability. The complex also features an eight-lane sprint straightaway, a pole vault lane, two long jump/triple jump lanes, throw areas, a four-lane warm-up straightaway and non-competition areas around the track.
"That was one of the reasons I stuck around," Rovelto says. "I wanted to make sure that (indoor complex) was done and was done right. I think it is. I think it's a phenomenal facility. It's a great meet facility. We have some really quality marks this year. From a training perspective, it's really, really good. You literally can have athletes training at every single field event at the same time and that's unheard of in an indoor facility. That's going to have a huge impact on the kids being able to train the way you should train going forward."
Indoor Track - 24 SE
Rovelto plans to move forward with his career in a slightly different capacity.
"I'll still be involved with the sport," he says. "I'll probably get more involved with coaching education programs and do some consulting. I'm sure I'll still be working with athletics to some degree going forward. I don't think I could ever get away from that."
It all comes back to the undergraduate from KU who never thought he'd be a coach. As an undergraduate, he was a part of the Kansas Relays student committee. He aided legendary track and field coach Bob Timmons, did his practicum in coaching with the track and field team, which at that time was rare (previously, education majors did their practicums with junior highs and high schools). He taught history at a junior high at Ft. Leavenworth. While he was there, he helped out with cross country. Just so happened they started girls cross country that year. Toward the end of the season, the head coach became ill, so Rovelto coached the entire team. The boys placed high in the state and the women placed second in the state the first year of the program.
"Even though I never had plans to do the sport," Rovelto said in 2022, "things happened and with the people who were around, I understood why it happened, if that makes sense."
Thus began a legendary career.
What a journey it's been.

Would have been nice for Fritch to get some commentary from some of the athletes Rovelto coached over the years...
Regarding the new hire, I'm hoping we see something better from Mean Gene than we've seen with some of the other Olympic sports (baseball being the worst example). I'd love to see him go for a top assistant at one of the premier programs. With the potential for elimination of partial scholarship sports in the next few years, there's a huge opportunity for programs around the country to become true players in track/XC.

Is there an assistant somewhere with connections to Jamaica? They could lure elite talent here and turn KSU into a cradle of sprinters.

I'm not sure we have the climate for that...
If it were me, I'd hire the best throws coach at a premiere school and go all-in on throws and multi-events with a lighter emphasis on middle distance/distance.
We may be "High Jump U" right now (though, frankly, we haven't really been for a while), but that all goes out the window when Rovelto leaves. And, hitching your wagon to athletes who, for the most part, only score points in one event isn't typically a recipe for success at the conference/national level (as it relates to competing for team titles).

Your strategy sounds better than mine. I need to get to MHK to watch an event in the new indoor Octagon of Track next season.

Kassanavoid advanced to finals - throws tomorrow night for a chance to go to the Olympics.
-
Kassanavoid was off today - finished sixth with a season-worst 227-11. Her best mark from yesterday (234-9) would have been good enough for bronze today and a trip to Paris.

From Arkansas. Has a background in jumps and multis. Seems good.

seems like a good hire

This is the type of hire we should make for all of our Olympic sports - long established No. 2 person at a high-level program that knows what it takes to run a high level program.
He specializes in the horizontal jumps, which, assuming we emphasize, is a good move for us. Would love to see us build the team foundation on horizontal jumps + throws with some track events sprinkled in (probably easier for us to emphasize middle distance/distance vs. sprints given our climate).
Assuming Dibbini has another craptastic year, he should be gone next and, hopefully, Mean Gene will pull off another hire like this one.

With the global nature of soccer, there have to be coaches all kinds of coaches out there who are young, scrappy and hungry.

Even at the time of hiring, Dibbini was an absolute dogshit of a hire. Zero experience at the D1 level. ZERO. But, he went to college in Kansas, coached high school soccer in Kansas and did well at a Kansas NAIA school and at a D2 school in California. So, of course, that'd all translate.
His K-State winning percentage is .317 (35-86-18). His best season record is 6-10-2. Last year - in year No. 8! - he posted the worst record of his tenure (yes, even worse than year No. 1 of the program).
Good lord, what else do we need to move on?

He's treated his staff like complete crap from the beginning, hence why they are always bolting. Now it's to the point where he's having trouble replacing them 'cause people don't want to work with him.

wtf Gene. fire his ass

First off the track hire appears to be quite good on paper.
As far as soccer goes. My view dictates that if you're a coach of a program with the fastest facilities ascendance in K-State athletic history - you better be doing pretty decent by the time year 4-5-6 roll around. Irrespective of the overall age of the program itself.

Some interesting choices for the staff...
Obviously, Davis-Woodhall is a name and, presumably, she'll be competing for a few more years. Hopefully, she'll lure other elite horizontal jumpers. The throws coach is very good and came from Tennessee (historically, a strong program in throws/multis). The multis/pole vault coach has been at Central Missouri forever, but that's a really good D2 program, so you assume the coaching will translate.
As for the rest of the staff... the distance/CC head coach is pretty young and fairly undistinguished (comes from Belmont). The assistant CC/distance coach was the head coach at Western Illinois - not a great program, but he seemingly was turning things around. The sprints coach was the track strength/conditioning coach at Arkansas (it's happened before, but also not super common to go from a s/c coach to a full-time assistant coach). We stole the jumps coach from KU and he's pretty young, but he's from Jamaica and competed on the international circuit for a while.
All-in-all, this seems to indicate an emphasis on throws/jumps/multis, which I think is a good move for the program.
I'm hopeful/optimistic that we'll be back to consistent top 15-20 finishes at the national meets. Of course, with the recent explosion of available scholarships, the landscape is now going to be very, very different and I have no idea how many scholarships we'll actually offer in any given year. Certainly possible that the marquee programs stockpile a lot of the talent across the board.

Not sure where this goes but XC fans will appreciate this. Graham Blanks from Harvard wins the NCAAs. The runner who got 2nd from New Mexico ran the final 5K of the 10K race with just one shoe after losing a shoe in a scuffle with some other runners. It was about 35 degrees on the course. People are amazing. I didn't see any KSU Cats in the race.

Good looking class for us... lots of international kids + impact transfers + some Kansas kids.
Looks like they're going for jumps, multis and middle distance, which I think is a good formula for the program's success.

Went to the meet yesterday. Enjoyed the crap out of it. I like all the quirky distances they have for indoor meets: 60M, 200M, 400M, 600yds, 800M, 1000M, 1mile.

There are an amazing number of elite high jumpers who have come from Kansas. Alan Hanna from Maize just jumped 7' 1" at the KU Relays last weekend. Pretty sure he is signed with the Cats for next year.

Most of them spent their youth climbing on tractors, which simulates the high jump form in many ways.

Riley Marx (sophomore javelin thrower from Andale) is an All-American:
https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/2025/020-1_compiled.htm (https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/2025/020-1_compiled.htm)
Monique Hardy will be throwing today.

That's a pretty good toss . . .
I see they're now putting the not so new spear back out there at 90 plus meters/300 plus feet.
The 'new' Javelin world record is 98.48 meters and that's not that far off the old javelin world record which prompted the change in weighting/aero.

Strong finish got him to third.

Helluva second day (scored more points than anyone else). Fourth best mark in school history and top 40 mark in the world this year.
He's met the minimum standard for the world championships (but not the auto standard), so an outside chance he could make it and compete for Sweden.
Men have a good chance to score in the triple jump as well and with a good finish, could place in the top 25 or so. The women have only one chance to score points left (high jump).
-
Awesome day for our 1st Team AA SwedeCat!

Looks like the two LadyCats in the 400M hurdles didn't make the final. Still ran 400M while jumping over hurdles in 58 sec which is crazy.
