-

-
I get my parents a bottle of wine every year. It's become a tradition and I'm so glad it has because every year, bam, I stop by the liquor store and pick out the first red I see in my price range.
-
an emaw christmas tree ornament (sounds pud, but she'll love it).
-
Thinking about elite patio furniture but afraid Kat kid will start coming over and sitting all over it

Serious response: Give us some information about what your Mom likes and hates.
Likes: Cat's Meow, kitchen stuff, quilting, walking, working w/ kids with disabilities, conservative artsy/fartsy stuff.
Dislikes: She's your typical 60 year old Kansan. So, whatever those type of women dislike.
-

that's a good gift but tough because not seasonal.

Absolutely. Very hard to give in winter but, between you and me, her current set is not comfortable and ruins my visits to her house. So is it okay to give a kind of selfish gift here? I also got her some great Ghiradelli stuff from SF

Yea, I thought about buying her a ticket to fly out and see me (I'm in SD, CA and she is in lovely Topeka, KS). However, my dad might be jealous that he only received a Garmin.

WTF is going on here? Is Limestone Shvvyman's dad?

He asked what we got, not what he should give, until middle of thread

1) webcam so she can see her kids when she talks to them (probably most other moms already have this)
2) gift certificate to nice brunch spot

Yankee Candles are my usual default. I pick up one of those, something at bath and body works, a kitchen appliance/utensil, and some other random $20 item and call it good. I use the shotgun approach with my mom.
-
your mom hates all of those things. get her something personal bad person.
-
My mom loves cat bb and the drive there and back w her fav son. So I got her a couple games tix for her and i to attend together and a nice sweatshirt to keep her warm from the car to the fOOD.

Yeah CNS nails it. But if your mom's patios furniture lacks good cushions and a sturdy table to place all grilled food, drinks, salads and a stereo then you owe it to her to get her new patio furniture.
-
Agreed. Moms spends a lot of time out side. Would love that as much as cat bb.

I got my mom a wireless printer. It's what she asked for.

ksu cat clothes.

A gallon ziploc bag of the finest herb. People that age love that kind of crap.
-
Got my mom some fancy kitchen knife.

Almost all of you must really dislike your mothers. :frown:

4th year in a row I've done a calendar of all the grandkids for my parents. My mom usually cries when she opens it. Also she's getting a funky dish for serving dip at parties (she's always entertaining) and a sun hat from world market.
-
I may be a terrible son/person. I would never get my mom anything that would force me to spend any more time with her. I am a good gift-giver, though.

Yeah. . . If I am around my mom for too long, she will try and talk me into going to church with her. Then she'll make me feel bad when I say no.

made her a calendar :D

If you do a good job she'll cry tears of joy. Its what moms do.

I made my wife a photo book of our kids. She eats that crap up and it took me about 5 minutes.

That counts for sure.

A knife set because I noticed at Thanksgiving that she had approximately zero knives that were sharper than a butter knife.
-
My entire family would always go look for things to get for my mom when we actually lived at home, but I'll be damned its hard as crap to find something my mom actually wants so we always end up getting her stuff that I think she just pretends to like. The only thing she likes are shoes and she sure as crap doesn't want me buying shoes for her.
-
tv wall mount (plus installation by me)

A purse and some jewelry that Sister Bread picked out. The real gift is that I have been a raging success my entire life (academics, sports, gfs, now career) and she always has an endless supply of ammo to big-time her friends about. Presently with my line of work, I make the paper a lot. Mother Bread (and Grandma Bread) love the hell out of this. Nothing a mom loves more than bragging about her son. Anyone who doesn't know this, doesn't know crap about moms.
-
That's all of us Bread. That's no longer a gift anymore than giving her a glass of Dom. It's expected
-
Good thread. Lotta good ideas in here but you sort of have to sift your way through the shitty ones to find them.
-
When we were growing up my mom kept a "Vacation Diary" where she would write about different trips and then have us write our favorite parts.
A couple years ago my sister and I took them and cut out the various pages and made them into a big scrap book thingy with photos from the vacations and other random stuff(Ski's for a trip to colorado, sand castles for FL etc, etc).
My mom really enjoyed that...Will probably just get her a new wallet this year.

This. I've sent flowers to my mom at her work before....all the ladies are all like "OMG, your husband is so great" then my mom big times them and is like "Nope, they are from my awesome son" and all the ladies gasp and wish their son would send them flowers.

That's money. May have to use that one next year in addition to a few other gifts.
-
gather all your siblings and have your picture taken with santa,,,,,I don't care how old you are or how young...your mom will love it
maybe you can make her a gift or write her something like a song or poem because if it comes from your heart she'll probably love it even more (plus it wont cost as much as earrings) but if that doesn't work how about just buying her matching necklaces or bracelets to go with the earrings you bought her.
==========================================
Okay, so I don't have the perfect gift idea. It is very hard to shop for your mom. Do something that is personal and isn't about money and then also give her some gift that she always uses, like a nice purse or coat or something you know that she always likes to have new or really classy.

Not a horrible gift. She is in kind of a freelance industry and is self-employed. The entrance fee was $500 and she wanted to go, but wasn't sure she should spend the money. So... now she gets to go, and doesn't have to worry about whether she should spend the funds.
P.S. Way better gift than a random bottle of wine from the nearest liquor store, a Yankee candle or bath stuff. (Looking at some of you here.)
-
what a beautiful christmas for your mom. really tugs at the heart strings.
-
I am going with a gift card to an elite resort/spa
-
When I was younger I gave my mom a new microwave because I thought hers sucked, kind of a mixed response.

She's kind of a rock star with a rock star job. But Ts and Ps are always appreciated anyway.

Rock stars are known to be very frugal with their money.

Funny, I didn't recall seeing her at the last rock star conference I attended. Well, I guess that won't be a problem anymore

Normally I hate gift cards (it's like hey, here's some money that you can only spend in one place because all I care to know about you is that is a store you were in at least once).
But that is a solid gift.
My mom likes horses and tack and stuff. So I bought her an old camel saddle and had our brand put on it.
