Assuming MHK gets the nod from everyone here, what is the 2nd best town? If you are from a suburb, be specific.
I vote Lenexa. Fun fact, there is a movie about Lenexa that stars a Baldwin brother (irrelevant which one), so that is neat.
-
kck was the place i enjoyed living the most, but i was 2 blocks from joco and like 10 from MO, so i'm not so sure it really even counts as kck.
lawrence has the highest fun-to-visit:sucks-to-live-in ratio.
-
Definitely Lenexa. Pretty stupid thread, actually. It's like asking which is the 2nd best back to the future movie (as if anyone doesn't know).
Maybe start a thread about 3rd best Kansas town just to make it interesting.

Sure it counts. The rosedale area where you're describing is a pretty good area. Ok Joe's :lick:

There is only one town in KS to have produced a Miss America. It's an easy 2nd place.

My g-ma lives in Silver Lake. Awesome town. I used to work at Wehners.

How many of you have listed your home towns? I won't, because I am able to sort emotion from fact. And so I'll throw in a vote for Abilene.
Abilene is a town of historical importance, and not just for Kansas, but for the country. As K-Staters we know it as the last stop on the fabled Chisolm Trail, where Texas ranchers drove their cattle to board the trains heading back east. Famous historical figures to walk the streets of Abilene include Wild Bill Hickock, General Custer, and President Eisenhower. In fact Eisenhower was born and raised there, how many other Kansas towns produced a US president?
Abilene was the first, the original "cow town" of the west. And still today agriculture is an important part of the local economy. Good, honest, salt of the Earth kind of people live and work there.
Abilene is home to one of the Wonders of Kansas: the Brookville Hotel. Great rough ridin' chicken! No menu! You eats what you gets!
Abilene has produced some fine K-State athletes, most recently Cody Whitehair, Curry Sexton, and Emma Osterman.
And there's tons to do in Abilene! Of course you could tour the Eisenhower Memorial and Library. But there's also the Museum of Indian Arts and Crafts! Also, the Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame! Abilene is pretty much the center of the world for greyhound racing. Also, the Museum of Modern Telephony! In fact, cell phone giant Sprint was founded in Abilene!
I think if you look at facts you can't deny Abilene this honor. No other town in Kansas has spawned a Fortune 500 company, a US president, one of the Wonders of Kansas, athletes for K-State, and stories of old gunfighters. Not one.

I got married in Abilene. FYI.

MORE MEADE STUFF I JUST THOUGHT OF:
-stuffed two headed cow (AT THE DALTON GANG HIDEOUT!)
-2 gas station/convenience store combos and 4 if you count the co-op and the truck stop which also sell gas
-a iquor store (FINALLY!)
-2 baseball fields, 1 with a really short fence for bombs and homerun derbys
-2 super large metal buildings at the fairgrounds for wedding dances, festivals, baking competitions, the works really (across the street from the baseball field with the longer fence)
-clay pigeon shooting gun thing (across from the metal buildings and next to the baseball field with the long fence)
-train tracks on the north edge of town
-dollar general store (Alco mentioned above but this list is not just for rich people)
-like, more churches than you can count. probably more than a thousand.
-less than a one hour drive to a Buckle or Maurices for your high end shopping needs
-
How many of you have listed your home towns?
not me, I grew up out in the country away from city life. a real free agent.

Does Meade have a grocery store, steve dave?

How many of you are moving to Meade after seeing this stuff? Like, more than a million of you? The Moon Mist Motel only has about 10 rooms.

Not me. Meade is lacking diversity.
The racial makeup of the city is 95.4% White, 1.0% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races

Garden City does have a very nice zoo, and it charges no admission. Also, the public pool is enormous and only costs $1. They are always closing the pool to clean it up to standards, though. Apparently none of the kids take showers before they get into the water and they also pee in it.

Like to throw Scott City in the ring. I'm not from there, but they're very EMAW friendly. Plus NUT FRY! :gocho:

McPherson is nice. NCRA throws money all over that town.

I kind of like council grove. They have a great private lake, very emaw, close proximity to mhk. And don't get me started on washunga days
-
More Abilene facts:
The priest at the Catholic church used to be married! I always thought it was stupid for priests to give marriage advice, but I kinda listened to this guy. Good dude.
IN ADDITION to a Sonic, there is a Dairy Queen, Mr Kuntz's Drive In (pronounced Koontz), and then some drive through place that my wife would kill all over you over.
The K-State sky diving team now practices at Abilene airport. Pretty cool to watch them on weekend mornings after watching a Cats victory.
There's like a ton of gas stations there.
The Abilene-Chapman rivalry is the oldest west of the Mississippi. Was featured in Sports Illustrated.

so is nobody able to provide actual good town facts to compete with Meade? doesn't seem like anyone is. so sad.

If your town doesn't have 2 sonics, 2 pools, and at least 1 QT, your town sounds pud.

That's right, KKK. You're more cultured than I.

if there is a more boring whitebread suburb of KC than prairie village I've yet to see it.
PV facts:
94% of the population walks their dogs in north face pullovers every day
91% of the population has full length spandex lance armstrong'esque biking gear and bikes
87% of the population loves to eat ethnic food and rave about how great and authentic it is because it's ethnic food no matter how good or awful it is because they have no rough ridin' clue either way
92% of the population has at least one PBR in their basement beer fridge
86% of the population orders, every morning, a coffee or tea beverage with more than 3 words in its name
IT GOES ON!

Not sure when it came out. Saw it a few years ago. Got it from Netflix because of the name. I think it was Billy Baldwin. Not sure, I get him and Stephen mixed up.

I used to deliver food in JOCO. Worst tippers were in Lenexa. So, that's my bias.
KT Fryers still there? I liked their chicken.

A late nominee is Mayfield. Possibly the smallest town on the list but they have a pretty sweet softball field. When they dont have little league games (great concession stand burgers, really) you can play softball and put a keg on first base! Fun times when you put a slip-n-slide from 3rd to home!

why don't you just put a keg and a slip and slide in your yard? the softball part seems stupid.

Reminds me of Maple Hill. When you first drive into Maple Hill you think, "Oh what a pretty town." But as soon as you are done thinking that you are through it. I'll bet Maple Hill wishes it were bigger.

Not even Topekans will defend Topeka. After JC gets fired I say we at goEMAW aim our powerful political actions at moving the capital of Kansas to Manhattan. Centrally located and doesn't smell like garbage or shoot police officers.

The main reason I don't like Topeka is that it doesn't have an identity. If I had to pick one, it would be chain restaurants, and I hate chain restaurants.

Topeka losers:
Worst Small Cities for Crime (<200,000 pop.)
Topeka, KS
Topeka has the highest rate of property crime among cities with fewer than 200,000 population. The rates of larceny and robbery are especially high.

Yeah. There are three great things about silver lake. The first is the two mailboxes, one a k-state one and the other a ku one, on the west side of the road as you cut through the town. i just love imagining those two are hattfield and mccoy types. "DID YOU SEE THAT bad person, JIM, NEXT DOOR PUT UP A K-STATE MAILBOX?!"
Second is the cups in the football field fence. love seeing those on a fall morning en route to mhk.
Third: Lon Krueger's auto shop thing.

Yeah, if you are going to live in a small town, being like 10 minutes from Topeka, living in a decently nice town with plenty of delicious loval eat's (Avila's), not to mention kicking ass all year long in high school sports (this is big if you are in a small town). would take.

About the same amount of time for me and I never saw a single murder, that's an average of one murder per 36 years. Pretty good for a city that size!

the girl that i went to watch play basketball there told me that sometimes when it rains the water is pinkish because of all the blood in the air.
i'm sure that's untrue, but having that as a local legend is enough to DQ this place.

I vote Abilene because it was one of the greatest and wildest cow towns in the wild wild west. It was so great that the town in Texas was named after it. How wild was it? Wild Bill Hickok (Deadwood fame) came in to be sheriff after the previous sheriff got his head chopped off with an axe by a pair of farmers but Hickok only lasted about a year because he shot his deputy during a shootout. That wild.

I think Atchison is majestic in it's own way. Set in a valley, right by the river, and good people. :dunno:
that's where like bethany or something is isn't it? watched a wbb game there once.
Bethany is in Lindsborg (Which I hear is pretty cool too) just 10 miles south of Salina. Benedictine is in Atchison. I almost played baseball there.
I've been there, probably with your source regarding lindsborg, it's a trash town. With a trash college. A trash bar that is owned and ran by trash. Lindsborg would win trashiest ks town award tho.

I don't think the people of Horton have the means to traverse that kind of distance.

In fact Eisenhower was born and raised there, how many other Kansas towns produced a US president?
Abilene is home to one of the Wonders of Kansas: the Brookville Hotel. Great rough ridin' chicken! No menu! You eats what you gets!
I think if you look at facts you can't deny Abilene this honor. No other town in Kansas has spawned a Fortune 500 company, a US president, one of the Wonders of Kansas, athletes for K-State, and stories of old gunfighters. Not one.
Eisenhower was born in Texas and the Brookville Hotel was spawned in... Brookville.
Edited to add: Brookville Hotel has only been in Abilene since 2000.
So eff Abilene.

I vote Meade. SD is quite convincing.

So, it's Quivira?
-
Lake Quivira is a great town if you only want to live among the :opcat:. That gate? It's to keep the brown people out, unless they're tending the lawns or catering something.
-
Wait, so the city is called Lake Quivira?
-
Yes. It's in Johnson County and I'm guessing the reason they have all those gates is its very near proximity to Kansas City, Kan.
-
Jesus, that sounds awful.

right next to a landfill too. sounds great.

Wamego is pretty big by small town KS standards

I've been there, probably with your source regarding lindsborg, it's a trash town. With a trash college. A trash bar that is owned and ran by trash. Lindsborg would win trashiest ks town award tho.
Gorbachev wanted, and did in fact get, a drink from this bar. The 'borg is Paris next to Meade. High art, high culture. Home to Berger Sandzen and an elite National Geographic photographer. It's not replacing Abilene based on cuisine shortfalls and weak high school athletics, but it's top five. The college is trash.

So I just went to a hibachi steakhouse and had all of their Japanese beers. I logged them in Untappd but the Foursquare plugin didn't have this restaurant so in that case I check in some place funny. Went with a massage parlor. Friend texted me "dude holy crap are you getting a handy and drinking rice beer?"

I'm obvs still Team: Abilene (especially now since they have Ike's, a much better drinking/dining/sports watching experience), but has anyone mentioned Wilson or Cottonwood Falls?
-
I'd go with Atchison or possibly McPherson.
I've been to all the towns on this list, so I feel I can make an educated decision.
-
I may have to join Team Abilene too. :surprised:

Atchison smells like crap. McPherson has the refinery. Both kinda gross.
-
Guys the EMAW skydiving club jumps out of Abilene now. In the warm months if I'm out that way every morning I drink my coffee and watch those crazy fuckers.
-
Lol @ dumbass cops. Everyone knew what those two places were when they popped up two years ago.

"hey bob, you've been to that massage parlor every Tuesday and Thursday for the past year, any idea if they give out handies after the massages?"
"yeah boss I really don't know. im gonna keep going back until my wife starts giv- I mean uh... until I figure this thing out!"
-
Really surprised Belleville ks hasn't been mentioned. It is the cultural epicenter of the Midwest.

Was a bullpup, and I think he played at one of the colleges there. Pretty sure he played on some of their great teams. Could be wrong tho. BTW, grats to your bro. I never thought they'd be better in a harder division after losing their best player last year.

Wamego has got to be the 2nd best town in Kansas. They have the Oz museum and they are only about 15 minutes away from the #1 town. :ksu:

He played on two state championship teams his Junior and Senior years. It was during the span where they lost 2 games in 3 years. He then played four years at Mac College.

I just assumed she was confused and thought she was in the second worst town thread and what she was saying was being sarcastic.
Maybe she can co?

mcpherson I would put in "most underrated town" category. is overdue to give us some basketball talent though

It's in Pot county. That alone makes it the best town in KS

Visited the Eisenhower Museum for the first time in 20+ years. Everything inside has been recently redone and it is a stunning tribute to the life and values of the greatest Kansan. You can visit for free with the "Sunflower Summer Pass" if you have students in KS schools. If not, it is worth the $15 admission. (esp for :k-stategrads:) I would allow 2 - 3 hrs to experience it.
-
Did you go gander at the WORLDS LARGEST BELT BUCKLE too?

Incredible. I like to think of myself as pretty ITK when it comes to Abilene but this is all news to me.

They're pretty proud of it. I forgot to get out that way when I was around Tuesday last.

McPherson College is receiving a $1B donation
some quick googling would indicate this is from Harry Stine, a billionnaire alum
-
That’s pretty cool. I’ve always like Mac.
-
Is this a two years program? If so, it might be the same school that Jay Leno visited and it made state-wide news because he gave them a substantial donation. This was around a dozen years ago.

Pretty sure Central Christian is the 2-year. I think Mac College is 4-year, but I could be wrong.

This is correct. Mac college is the one that received the donation and Leno is a huge supporter of their auto restoration program.
