So this Canadian guy that I know recently had some plans change and needs good ideas for a vacation in the first week of January time frame.
Any ideas?

Just can't do it.

The bruceketball'rs play in MHK on 1/5. Noticed that Friday when I was looking at my flight itinerary for a trip that sounds eerily similar to Pete's.

That's the Oklahoma State game, the first Big 12 game of the oscar Weber era. You'd think people would be more excited about that.

I love skiing. But, Mrs Pete is terrible at it.

Resort & Spa at a beautiful locale in Colorado. You ski, she spas.

I hear the Gaza is pretty warm that time of year.

how bad is the drive from Vegas to PHX?

4-5 hours. I know some people who did this in 03 and are probably going to do it again if we beat UT. I don't know if that helps, but if they are wanting to do it again, I'd say it's not a bad idea.
-
Puerto Vallarta. We're headed the Tuesday after CTR.

Thursday/Sunday nights are the biggest TV nights of the week. :dunno:
Tempe/Glendale
After an afternoon ice cream pak with J-Dub and Tobias, feeling like I'll do Tempe if we get there.

Spending the whole workweek in Arizona to get the pregame bowl experience vs. spending Friday - Sunday in Florida.

OK, looks like Cancun is the leader in the clubhouse at this point. SF/Napa Valley is a contender as well, but Cancun has a solid lead. I've never been to either location.
Do I watch the Fiesta Bowl from a Marriott in Napa Valley or the JW Marriott in Cancun? Thoughts?

If, IF we make the Fiesta Bowl, I will not go. I've been before, when it was in Tempe. That was OK. Got to see Bish beat McNabz. Fun game, but pretty shitty town...and Tempe is more fun than most spots in the Phoenix area. I'm going with wife, so golfing vacation to Scottsdale is out...sooo, zero reasons to go to Phoenix. (also, Oregon would beat us by a bunch).
Even worse, if we don't beat UT, we'll fall to Alamo. Been there before too, not going back.
Nope, it's Cancun I think.

What do you have to do with it?
If this was about you instead of a Canadian guy, wouldn't you be watching the game at home the night before flying somewhere?

Good questions, Perry Matlock.
Fiesta Bowl is on the 3rd, and I plan to be drinking a drink with an umbrella on it by late afternoon that day. Canadian guy is out, for reasons that I cannot disclose (he's in the CIA, but do not let that leave this board, TIA).

What do people do in Cancun? My wife will probably not let us go to one of those places where everyone blows whistles and vats of foam drop from the ceiling. So, non-whistle/foam ideas, please...

I will go to the beach some for sure. However, we are not big lay-out-ers. Will do some, but will mostly drink and read. No sand castling, etc.
Para-sail is out. Does not look fun to me. Looks like a pain in the ass.

I mean, we'll go to the beach and stuff, but I/we are more up for a cabana and kindles than a towel and coppertone. I'd put the beach time at about 25% of the trip...couple hours each morning or evening or some such.
Basic scuba (not certified), snorkling, great restaurants, booze cruises, that sort of thing sounds good.

Yes you can take all of your course work down there and become certified or you can do Snuba. No cert for it.

Snuba looks good/easy. We did a dive in Maui and Kaui years ago, non-certified. We were just limited to like 30 feet deep or something. Do they do that kind of thing? Would it be better or worse than snuba?
-
Yeah you can do the discovery scuba pretty much everywhere. Shallow water no cert required. Not a very good bang for your buck though as they overcharge for this since it is mostly lazy widwestern tourists. This is much better than Snuba as you ar not tethered to the raft. Certification is really easy. You should be able to do it online from a KC dive shop with a couple of pool dives (just takes a Saturday afternoon to complete). They will then set up your open water dive on your vacation. Boom Certified!

Cancun, the Branson of the Yucatan. Enjoy the drug violence.
At least got to Playa Del Carmen.

Incredible pools. Lovely beach. Great service. It's a ways from downtown and the night-lifey Cancun. So if you're looking to experience the nightlife and shopping, this probably isn't best location. It's also an all-inclusive and adults-only, but not like swinger-adults. It's about 45 minutes north of the airport.
Boyfriend and I went with five other couples and had a blast. The only thing I remember about the TV situation: Flat screens. Free porn -- not that we used it, it's just, you know, a memorable flip through the channels. Don't think the sport package is all that great. One of the couples were squawks and I do remember some drama when he couldn't see some game. (Very early basketball season.)

I was in Cancun a month ago for a short bachelor party. Stayed at the RIU Caribe which is all inclusive. Food was pretty great and there were alot of people aged 25-40 there. We stayed Saturday through Tuesday and it was dirt cheap, like less than 500 for 2 people.
Went deep sea fishing one day but didnt catch anything too impressive but alot of smaller fish. The swells were pretty bad though and over half the group ended up puking off the side(although pak'n until 3 am then getting up at 7am to fish may have somethign to do with it).
All in all I would do it, we had a blast....And if you play beach volleyball be sure to get the brazilians on your team.
-
I've done snuba a few times, pretty fun.
How much fun you have is dependant on if you're tethered to dumbasses. I was tethered to dumbasses who never got comfortable breathing underwater. I essentially had to drag all their asses holding onto the tank the whole time.
-
Also, getting scuba certified is def worth it. Its a lifetime certification so you only have to do it once and there is actually a good dive spot in Missouri: http://www.2dive.com/btm.htm

indeed. We plan to go whale watching since the season starts next week.
I enjoy seeing sights on vacation, not laying in a lawn chair for a week. We do some pool time at the beach club

and then we explore the town and surrounding area. like going to the PVR Zoo and playing with the baby jaguars.

Better diving, faster in/out at the airport, less narco types

I've done both Cancun and PVR, and yes, Lake Perry has nicer beaches. Also, the hotels in Cancun are far more elite than in PVR. There are about two hotels in PVR that don't have concrete floors -- and not the stamped fancy concrete. It's concrete like in your parents' basement. Also, if you're going to scuba, Carribbean waters are so much clearer and cleaner than those in the Bay of Banderas in PVR.

Important caveat to all of this, it has to have a Marriott property that is worth a damn, AND Delta has to fly there.

I second the Puerta Vallarta suggestions.
If you're not into laying around on a beach all day and want to walk around a cool European style city and look at Iguanas and go into the jungle and see where they filmed Predator and eat lunch under a waterfall, PV is where it's at.
Pacific side is the true experience. Cancun was manufactured for American tourists that like Applebee's.
You should also consider Acapulco. I've stayed at this place before and it is pretty incredible. http://www.expedia.com/Acapulco-Hotels-Las-Brisas-Acapulco.h23260.Hotel-Information (http://www.expedia.com/Acapulco-Hotels-Las-Brisas-Acapulco.h23260.Hotel-Information)

Give it another week or two and see if you can nail one of those last minute weekend rates on the side. Wouldn't use points for $109

$109? Jesus Christ that's cheap.

Good idea. I'll reserve it using points, and then cancel last minute if I can find a better rate at that hotel or another highly rated one.

the lesson here is I need to stop wasting vacation days visiting family in Kansas and Arizona and start going to mexico. Cheaper flights and almost as close.

I ran the price for 1/4-1/11. If you book by 11/30 you pay $140/nt and get a $150 resort credit. You should remember that going forward rates will likely be increasing every week until summer. What may be $109 before Christmas will probably be higher after.
-
BTW you might be able to game the system - reserve 3 nights under your name, then 4 nights under your wifes.
-
Pacific side is the true experience. Cancun was manufactured for American tourists that like Applebee's.
I do not mean this :opcat: But who goes to Mexico for the "true experience?" I go for the cheap drinks and the warm weather. Kind of like how I go to Applebee's for convenience. For a true South American experience, I recommend Peru, Venazuala or Columbia. Watch out for the drug lords in Columbia, though, and the poors in Venz.
-
I just reserved the whole thing using points. 125K Marriott points for 5 nights. Not too bad.

Bro-in law just returned from vacation down there earlier this year. He mentioned it was real entertaining to watch the soldiers with submachine guns ride around town and the beach all day.

I actually felt safer walking around Puerto Vallarta at 11pm than I would in Topeka. Every block or two were armed Policia, making sure no one fucks with the tourist dollars.
