New name. New coach. New attitude.
Let's do this.

Smiles
"When I got the job, he called, we were still playing, and he tells me not to worry about us. I start looking into it, and they are a tournament team, and they have everybody back."
-oscar about Bob Chipman
“I think Shane (Southwell) has been pretty solid for us. He gives us a different look, and he can play really one, two or three."
-oscar on the Straw
“Coach tells me that I am so dominant with my left hand, why not use your right hand to mess with defenders? I have been working on it and I will continue to work on it.”
-JO on oscar
I can't help but root for this guy. I know I hated him when he first came here. I know I am not nearly as emotionally invested as with Frank. But Jesus Christ this guy is adorable and ridiculous. Maybe this is a coping mechanism, but whatever. Give me more oscar. The relentless drum beat of guys throwing Frank under the bus and praising oscar has me wanting to be patient to see what happens when the bullets fly. The "we're relaxed" and "we're closer as a team" quotes are laid on so thick that I will be watching. Now a lot of that may be Nino butthurt for not playing at all. But McGruder has had quotes like that too. Nothing else to add on oscar so far.
Nino is RevHoney, the King of the Energy drink I don't think he will be a legit Big 12 regular, but for an "energy" guy he is great! I mean Merriweather? Ojeleye? WOOF! The fact that Vic did not get us Semi, is making me upset. Let's move on.
ROD hit his 3's, hustled, rebounded. O-Rebounded a FT, then chased down a steal. Overall a frustrating night for him with foul trouble and a lack of good looks. Still smiling here.
JO OK showed a bit more skill away from the basket. At one point hit a turnaround baseline J. Also, will watch for increased use of his right hand messing with people.
Tay-Straw-Gruds-Nino-DJamer fun lineup that oscar used to press out of a timeout. Went on a 5-0 run before subbing in Omari and moving Straw to the 3 and they started looking like crap. We are very vulnerable if Angel is not having a good game because our guard play deteriorates quickly after that. But this team could go big guards/small forwards and really frustrate teams. Obviously I think subbing Angel for Tay there makes that lineup significantly better, but it worked especially well because Washburn went zone out of that same timeout. I could see us trying something like this against Baylor for a few minutes out of a timeout.
Straw mostly stirred, only sucked a little He is really the best passer on the team against zone. Against man I think it is Angel because he can create space off the dribble (and Gip is really underrated). He also hit a jumper that looked like it had two inches of arch, then HIT A 3!
DJamer is going to be good His defense is not very good, but he can finish in the post. His body looks like it needs to get bigger, but if Gip is any indication, his conditioning and size should be great in a year. Excited about this guy.
Diaz has set sail for all of my Good Hopes He banged the O-boards. Very active. Still looks like he could be skilled, but more importantly does a good job timing his boards and put backs on O. On D? Still not good.

CRIES
Angel had a blister on his foot This makes me sad because of what I had to see from the other scrubs that tried to play his position on the basketball court. oscar needs to get our bigs to crash the rim so Angel can throw oops. He is always looking for them and he looks sad when he gets enough space to toss them and no one is there so he calmly stutters and then passes to McGruds for a corner 3. T's and P's Angel.
Sprads off to a bad start There is no way to sugar coat a performance like that from a third year player. He went 1-5 from 3, he turned down a couple opportunities for his one effective shot (floater), his defense was bad, his ball handling and decision making worse. The most telling moment was that he was not PG with anyone except for a small stretch toward the beginning of the game. Not sure if that was a change or what, but he did not handle on-ball pressure well at all. He also looked out of shape, subbed himself at least once that I saw, looked gassed. Hoping he was sick or something.
Omari may be a great lover, but he's not a generous baller he dribbles without purpose and holds the ball too much. Doesn't really take people off the dribble, doesn't move the ball. Can't be a PG. oscar seemed disappointed in his play as though he is showing more in practice shooting. We will need him to do that, because I just can't see Will being up to it.
Orris looks about as good as Will right now which means he will be better I think. He looked quick and had a good energy about him. Handled the ball with Tay in the game (which is more about Tay, I think) and looked ok. Looked scared to do much.
Tay doesn't look like he developed at all Played a little point when it was that weird/fun lineup and luckily didn't have to do much, once the linuep got broken up and he was running with the 2's he could not handle the ball pressure or organize the attack. I am legitimately scared about what happens if Angel is hurt.
Gip was in troubs and had to play with the scrubs Looked like his body was completely different. He looks ready to dominate. Had a couple nice passes that were wasted on the turds he was playing with. Was doubled every time he touched the ball and handled it reasonably well. Which he will have to.
If an Ichabod falls in the fOOD, does it make a noise? No one was there. This was all I could think up. Sorry.

Another Cry:
I miss Andy Assley's wife.
-
Thanks for this. On tv it seemed like a church service.
-
Another cry:
Who the heck saved it under their basket and passed it straight to a Washburn player for an easy jam??? I thought that was Basketball 101.
-
does he apply tooth yellowener? i didn't even know they made such a product.
-
Interesting to hear that about DJamer as pretty much everything I had read about him was about the exact opposite. Guess it may have something to do with tonight's opponents. :dunno:
-
Everybody looked more skilled and technically sound, that about all you can take away from the game. Nobody was in rhythm in offense because they haven't completely figured it out. Thats why our energy guys (DJamer and Nino) looked like our best players.
DJamer and Nino do an excellent job of rebounding out side their area.
Nino looks like he figured out how to use his athleticism to create mismatches with opposing bigs. I would theories this to continue on to Big 12 play. He just creates to much separation and get of the floor way to quick.
Shane's shot has been clean up this should allow him to expand his game.
Omari played nervous and never figure out how to get involved with the offense, this can change.
The staff has work hard with JHR to add a hook shot... it has paid off.
Diaz and DJamer are still figuring out how to play the post.
When Angel was in the offense actually had a flow, HE IS A HELL OF A POINT GUARD.

Not sure why it is disappointing that Tay hasn't developed as a ball handler, he's a shooting guard. He should be judged on who he is not what you want him to be.
Sorry but you're dead wrong about DJamer, time will tell I guess. He is a much much much better defender and rebounder than he is a scorer. If you think Gip's numbers fell off as the season went along last year, just wait. DJamer benefited from a D2 front line. I don't think he is a bad jumper like some indicated in chat, as a matter of fact I think he is an excellent jumper & athlete. He is so raw on offense it is going to take him a while to learn how to play on that end of the floor at this level. He will be able to use his athleticism to rebound and block shots in the interim. I don't expect him to give us anything scoring wise until 2014.

There are no limitations to gip size, has a 7'2" wing span his size is fine. He has great feet and a good understanding of the game. His biggest problem is his conditioning it is really detrimental to his game. We need him to get in shape, he is our only post that is a tough guy, HE WILL NOT TAKE crap FROM ANYBODY.
-
MiR had good points about DJamer. I would disagree about his offensive capabilities. Tonight it looked like he had sound basic moves. Nothing flashy or extremely skilled whatsoever right now. Good body positioning, sound hands at the rim, and decent selection. Now that will not be enough in conference play. But a 5-8 10pt stat line isn't bad for a first game from him.
-
Thanks KK. I'm going to read the crap out of these now that I don't have regular access to emaw basketball games
-
We looked pudgy, greewalt is going to be missed.

Great stuff kk

Thanks KK.

The few things I noticed:
Joseph Smith, the big DJamer was matched up on for awhile, clowned him on like 3 straight possessions scoring a bucket, drawing a foul. I don't think DJamer has good positioning and he was very naive. The guy hooked him when DJamer bit on a terrible move. I think rebounding is probably his best skill right now, but the way he can finish, his size and his rebounding make me think he will be able to do some things on offense. His post defense didn't look that good to me, but I didn't watch him the whole game.
Entirely comfortable being wrong here.
As for Tay, that's fine that he isn't a PG. Great. But who else steps in to that enormous void? I don't see Freshman Will isn't coming back through that door. So now what? Is Orris ready? Yikes.

We, once again have no pg depth. My biggest complaint of Frank was that he insisted on signing nothing but combo guards who can not handle the ball & can barely shoot.

He learned from his mentor well.

Thanks KK. Great stuff.
And thanks to everyone, as I did not get to listen/watch.

there's a very limited number of big guards that can play with the ball so they end up having to choose b/w size and ball handling and they're going with size because of defensive concerns. it makes you realize how big a kid like tyril reed was for ku.

i'm interested in hearing from everyone's take on last night's offense versus what we saw out of frank.
what are the similarities you noticed, differences?

As I mentioned in the scrimmage thread a lot of the basics are the same. People acting like Weber and the motion offense is a reinvention of the wheel is going to be the death of me. You learn motion offense as early as middle school and virtually everyone runs some form or another of it. This offense is very similar to the non pinch post Frank offense; pass go away, flex cuts, pick and seal, etc.
To see a real earnest change to the look of the offense Weber will need to change the personnel. You astutely mentioned why Frank recruited guards the way he did, well that has quite a bit to do with what oscar is going to run as well. The offense isn't going to for instance be a spread and pop offense because we don't have the players to run such an offense.

MiR you're exactly right, i was just baiting the people who were posting a month ago about how upset they were that we were now stuck with "oscar's offense" because i'm sure some were the same who were defending frank's.

Dunno, not good at ID'ing/explaining offenses. I did notice that they didn't use as many slip screens for the bigs. Anyone else?

It's an exhibition game. I though we looked good, but its not very informative. (This is not to imply that I think we will be bad, if we had played poorly I would have also said its not informative.) I would glad to answer any specific questions you have, but I can't affect being a basketball evaluating guru. I more look at stats and numbers.

Our ball handling outside of Angel is just horrible/atrocious/bad.
-
It's the easy thing to do around here to hate on Sprads but my god, if he gets significant minutes this year it will hurt our team. He is a shooting guard that can't shoot.
-
Side Note: Bob Chipman is starting to look old. I always thought he's looked the same for like the last 30 years but then I saw him last night and I was like, man, he's starting to look old.
-
I hope Angel and Rodney never get tired

I expect sprads will be way down on the end of the bench by confernce play.

It will be fun to trip over to Manhattan to catch that 2nd round NIT game this year. Manhattan is beautiful in the spring.

Was just thinking about this some more. He may have looked older because he shaved his mustache. Sometimes that makes people look older.

Don't really follow b-ball recruiting, but my guess is we aren't fine after McGruder leaves.
