Title: Biggest Pleasant Surprise

Interior Defensive Line. I know we've discussed this before but I was very concerned about them coming in. They have been nails.

Yeah, I'd just say the defense in general. I mean, they were really bad at times last year.

Enjoy it while you can, folks.  Next year might be a little sketchy.  But lets not think about that right now.

Was it Blackmon and Bryant that you were hearing good things about in August?  Can't remember which two...that seems to be spot on.

on offense - it's hard to pick just one. i would have to say the pleasant surprise is that seemingly EVERYONE improved from last year.

on defense - Milo. this guy is is a walk-on from butler juco that was on no one's radar last year. guy is a stud tackler.

It's got to be the offensive line and the defensive line. It's also nice to finally have a safety in Zimmerman who doesn't get worse every year he plays.

1y is getting so good that we expect him to intercept to ball once or twice a game.  It's getting so routine that we're don't get excited anymore for what he has done for the team.

The complete lack of gimmick plays (except for "The Play") is a pleasant surprise. I don't even recall if we ran the Wildcat with a RB taking the snap all year. No rb's or wr's throwing the ball. It is awesome just to see this group line up and play without the gimmicks!

it would be pretty stupid because our QB is one of our best runners and any RB we put in there would be a worse passer than our QB

Yes, which makes it a pleasant surprise. Pease in the Wildcat last year would not be any different than Pease in the Wildcat this year. I didn't like it last year and I am pleasantly surprised I don't have to watch it this year.

We haven't run the Wildcat one time.

You can see Snyder's confidence in what we do; our main running game is power/lead with a few options mixed in. Nice mix of play action pass and drop back pass. Very few gadgets, even fairly conventional ones like reverses, let alone toss passes or anything like that. Plus the amount that he let's Klein check plays at the line of scrimmage is more than I've seen from any K-State QB, maybe Beasley was the other one that checked as often as Klein does.

I feel like Hubes got faster this season.
Also stronger, seems like he has ran thru more tackles this half season than he did all of last year.

I really thought he have would have a hard time improving from what he was last year - a good back that seemed hit a ceiling against high quality defenses.   Then he goes out and does what he did against OU

sams lines up behind ck in the pistol.  ck shifts to tight end.  the ball is quickly snapped to sams who rolls out right and hits ck in the corner of the end zone to pull ahead of bama with less than a minute left in the 4th quarter.

Our offensive line is the biggest pleasant surprise.

This is incorrect.  While the Oline wasn't really expected to be a strength, no one really thought that Dickey would field a front 5 full of respects.  However, MANY people were  :ohno: about the Dline.

Denied. The oline is much bigger than the dline. Have you seen Lucas? Meshak is great, but he and the other dlinemen are not nearly as big, surprise or otherwise, as the olinemen.

1) Defensive line, especially interior.
2) Offensive tackles.
3) Milo
4) Tuggle's transition.
5) Hubert's improvement.

Before the season I thought the biggest thing that would take this team from good to great was the play of both lines.

We also haven't had an impact player injured.  And this scares the crap out of me.

Unless Snyder really is a wizard, it's unimaginable that a team could go the entire season without an injury or a WTF play on offense or defense.

Our WTF play happened against Miami.  "The Play"

Also, Snyder used his magic to heal Arthur when he was briefly hurt during the North Texas game.

agree with those who state the defense as the biggest pleasant surprise...followed closely by the offensive line play.

I realize we have a bunch of seniors starting but I don't think the defense falls off a cliff.  The interior DL will have guys like Britz, Akinola, Hood, and Reed returning in the spring.  We also appear to be in the lead for Marquel Combs as well as in serious contention for a few more juco DTs.  I think we'll also get a solid DE or two from the juco ranks.  I am not concerned about the DL next year.

My biggest concern heading into next year is the hole left at mike LB.  We can't replace Arthur Brown.  We can minimize some of the loss by excellent play along the DL and at safety (which we could get) but you simply can't replace Arthur.

I'm not sold the DL or corner play will go into an abyss.  While their experience will be tough to replace it's not like we have amazing talent at those positions.  A kid like Riyahd Jones is an upgrade athletically at either corner spot.  I wouldn't rule out the possibility, if we keep winning, of getting a few high school kids who can contribute immediately on the defensive end.  I know that isn't normally the case but when you see a Travis Britz competing well as a true freshman it gives you an indication of the possibility.  BTW, a true freshman leads the Big 12 in tackles for loss and sacks.  Devonte Fields of TCU.
