Title: People without TVs
Post by: Cartierfor3 on August 01, 2012, 11:20:31 AM
Question:  Do you not have a TV simply so you can throw into the conversation "We actually don't have a TV" from time to time?  Because my experience is people I know who don't have a TV can't shut up about it.

A guy I know was interviewed by a newspaper for a community garden he was involved in. He turned the entire interview into "we don't have cable TV and we don't watch anything on TV except on the weekends. My kids are so much better for not watching cable." It was gross.

Kids without cable are weird. They don't understand what is going on in the world.

the "no computer" people seem to be worse, imo.

i know a married couple who doesn't have a computer in their house because they don't trust their judgement and think they'll talk to people they shouldn't be talking to.

seems like they have bigger issues than a computer.

FTR, I have a car. I was just trying to turn this thread into a popular sitcom from the '60's. However, living in a large city and not owning a car would be pretty awesome (assuming you had the money to own the car but just chose to live without it, because living in a large city while being homeless and without a car would really suck).

I both love it and hate it more and more every day. I mean, you just learn to enjoy things like people over-pronouncing "carnitas" and riding bikes with dogs in their backpacks and roll with it.

I would be here, though, and we could both love hipster culture but hate hipsters together. (It's more fun that way).

Did the same thing with Direct TV when out of town for a long vacation this summer and have just left it off.  The best part of kids watching the the same Nick Jr and Disney shows from Netflix and Amazon is no ads for crappy toys that they won't shut up about.  I wish we would of tried it before we owned two Cuddleuppets, a Slushy Magic and a Dream Lite.

JFC, I am totally like this.  I have some stuff dvr'd but never get around to watch it.  I will sit down and watch tv but the show that is actually on will always grab me instead of the recordings I have.  Even when I decide to watch them and sit down with that intention, I will end up watching regular tv.

DVR'ed sports are the best unless you like to tweet/chat during.

I usually start watching things right as half time would be starting and most often catch up to live programming by the last few min of the game.  It's fantastic.

It's like stealing an hour or hour and a half from the world.

On last Sunday's "Mob Wives" there was a segment where they were trying to give the backstory on one of the mobsters and how he brutally killed some lady during a robbery.  A newspaper clipping flashed on the screen with a big BRUTAL MURDER headline.  If you paused it and read the words underneath, it was all "lol i'm an intern and i have to type a bunch of words to make this look like a real article getting bored now i think i'll just cut and paste this the rest of the way".

1-Completely agree on the serial drama medium killing movies. For me it was Dexter. No turning back.

2-Also oddly agree on the live TV thing. Especially now that I'm overseas. I just feel disconnected or something otherwise.

3-My boss seriously doesn't watch TV shows. He occasionally goes to movies and watches games at bars. The rest of the time, he's this annoying dynamo that does nothing but read smart-guy books, write his own smart-guy books or articles, refinish his entire house, attend "art crawls" in different DC neighborhoods, or go fly fishing in Patagonia or some crap.

I have an in-law who is a doctor. He's always talking about how his kids don't like to eat unhealthy food because he never feeds it to them, and how when they eat out, his kids always just get a salad because it's their favorite food. Whenever they are coming over to my place, I always make sure that I'm well-stocked on candy and I let his kids pig out whenever he and his wife aren't looking.

Out of curiosity, why did you choose Dr. Thunder over any other type of pop?

Are you a big time Wal-Mart soda drinker?

What does everyone think of people who are all like, "I'll have a Coke please" and the waitress says "Is Pepsi ok?" and then random snobby customer is all like "Oh, :shockedfacedfollowedbyanger:, I'll just have water"

you shouldn't eat fast food, though.  stop trying to kill yourself.

Yeah, I know you shouldn't, but I'm not the guy who was debating whether a 1 hour round trip to In and Out Burger was worth it or not.

People who say they don't eat fast food can be pretty annoying, too. Also, people who won't eat at any chain because they only support local businesses.

Thanks, OK Cat. I don't eat it very often. I just immediately think "liar" when somebody tells me they never eat it.

Odd thing about San Franciscans I work with (not bay areans in general) - They are very proud of driving to work: it costs $300/month to park, so I think it's a class thing.

I also think local restaurants generally get an extra yelp star here just for being local.

Doesn't the bay area have a terrible smog problem? Or is there enough air flow that it just drifts off into the ocean and kills baby seals?

it's naturally foggy and hazy all the time, but not really "smoggy". but most people here really don't care about the environment any more than anywhere else.

Beantown thought the fog that's there basically every day was just really bad pollution.
