Title: Will the Nike deal be reupped?
Post by: Panjandrum on March 20, 2012, 12:35:55 AM
In one of the articles on Jamar out there (I can't remember which one) they said we're in the last year of the six-year Nike contract.  Are we going to end up extending that, or are we going to switch?  Will we be able to get another all-sports deal like we have now?

Has anyone heard anything on this?

I saw that. In another article it said that it was reworked when Huggins came.

The current deal that is expiring was the deal done during the Huggins season.

Adidas is fine.  I'm for whoever will pay us the most for an all-sports deal.

I bet we stay with Nike, though.  I would just like some confirmation.

Nike is the only company that "gets it" when making college uniforms.

I'd be very disappointment with anything other than that beautiful swoosh adorning our jerseys.

(except a jumpman logo )

I doubt Nike would go to the trouble of making us new jerseys for the past 4 years and then not renew our contract.

The question was whether or not we'll get an all-sports deal.

Hopefully the convo goes something like this.

NIKE: So KSU contract is up time to negotiate.  Do you guys want to keep your all-sports deal?

JC: I think we do, everyone? Anyone object?

BH, FM, BS, etc.: No we love our NIKE deal.

NIKE: All right this is an exciting time.  Moving forward we are going to have a lot going on in the KSU uniform department, a lot of experimentation, branding, etc.

BS: (interrupts) I don't want the football uniforms changed.

Everyone looks at Bill, and back at the NIKE guy, awkwardness all around.

NIKE: If we are going to continue this relationship the Athletic Department will have to give us the freedom to explore when it comes to the school's athletic outfitting.

BS: I don't want...

In walks Animal.

KS: Hey, guys.  Sorry I'm late you know how I love those never ending pasta bowls at OG.  Anyway, Bill, take it easy old timer.  What NIKE wants NIKE gets.

Animal turns to NIKE guy.

KS: We're all yours.  We're your guinea pig, hell change our colors if you want.  Just keep us lookin' fresh. Animal out.

NIKE: OK, looks like everything's settled then.  We will send in some renderings of the new pro combat football and the new Infinitely Elite basketball gear.

also, the only legitimate non-Nike contract I would agree to is if we went back to L.A. Gear like we had with altman.

Every team in the NBA wears adidas.  They own international soccer.  They bought out Reebok and now have tons of influence in the NFL.  KU, Louisville, Cincinnati, NC State, Baylor, Wisconsin, Indiana... all adidas programs playing in the Sweet Sixteen.  If it comes down to adidas offering a $28 million contract for all sports over the course of six years, or Nike offering $22 million for the same type of deal, would you really choose Nike?

I understand the love for Nike.  They're an American company that has a modern look to their apparel, but honestly, I've been really happy with adidas since KU made the switch.  The quality of their products have improved exponentially in the past several years.

It is good when players get to wear any year Jordans that they want.  It is good when players get to wear sweet-ass pro-combat uniforms.  It is good when our players and teams get to wear the same crap that all the top stars do ads for.  Adidas has come a long way in the uniform department, but Nike has so many different levels of appeal that it would take a substantial increase in contract revenue to move from NIKE if offered.  Like I jokingly posted earlier.  KSU should not be above letting NIKE make them a guinea pig for their Team Sports and Uniform concepts.

We should be absolutely thrilled if Nike wants to continue doing business with such a ridiculously small-timey organization like Kansas State University.  This Jamar ordeal is roughly on the same level as the QB of a high school team getting suspended because someone saw him drinking a beer out at the lake.

Do you know what profit entails?  It's basically revenues minus expenses.  K-State is basically sitting on a bunch of money because you're not upgrading facilities or paying your head coaches a competitive salary.

I own way more Adidas and New Balance shoes than Nike but zero items of Adidas or New Balance apparel.  Love my Nike KState hoodies, tees, shorts, etc.  Especially in regards to b-ball, Nike's stuff is so much more elite than everyone else it's not een funny.  Oregon's super bright yellow/green stuff?  rough ridin' awesome.  Baylor's Adidas stuff?  eff that crap.  #teamnikeatwhatevercost

I'm hearing that Calvin Klein will be outfitting the football team next year. Not sure about the basketball team, yet.

I'd take the extra six if we somehow used it to give the fball and bball team insanely and  I mean just insanely nice stuff/things.

Watch a video tour of OSU's locker room and you'll see why their recruiting is improving.  Surely we could do something similar for $6MM.  If they came out and said "Adidas is giving us $6MM more that Nike, so we are going to sit down and make a list of just the insanely nice things that any of our football players could every want and would be attractive to recruits.  We are then going to assign each project a score from 1 to 20 based on how it would impact the 'curb appeal' of KSU football to recruits.  We are going to find the combination of projects that maximizes the cumulative 'curb appeal' scores while staying at or below $6MM and commence on those projects as soon as possible."

This is the only way I'd switch away from Nike.

Reebok. But Dan couldn't even complete a high jump in Reebok gear and didn't make the Olympics. 4 years later he made the switch to Nike and, you guessed it, won the gold. Dan also beat Dave in the biathlon by utilizing a Ryder truck, so I wouldn't be opposed to canning that company out of Dodge City that supplies our hauler and just renting a Ryder truck when needed.

Seriously though, we should just order our uniforms out of Eastbay.

Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard both have their own shoes, plus there are several other adidas shoe lines, including ones that are specifically made for each college.  KU has several of our own:

Quote
It is a standard economic assumption (though not necessarily a perfect one in the real world) that, other things being equal, a firm will attempt to maximize its profits. Given that profit is defined as the difference in total revenue and total cost, a firm achieves a maximum by operating at the point where the difference between the two is at its greatest. In markets which do not show interdependence, this point can either be found by looking at these two curves directly, or by finding and selecting the best of the points where the gradients of the two curves (marginal revenue and marginal cost respectively) are equal. In interdependent markets, game theory must be used to derive a profit maximising solution.

Well, yeah, that's pretty much what I said.  The fact of the matter is that KU didn't profit as much because we spent more money.  KU still generated more revenue and had more money to spend.  Who cares how much you profit if it's just being hoarded.

I've never argued that KU has more profit than K-State.  I would rather have higher revenues and have more money to spend than to hoard a bunch of money and call it profit.  This is athletics...

26.7 million vs. 12.3 million.  Wow.

so, i don't understand profit when i say 23 mill vs 0 mill, then you say profit is "basically revenues minus expenses"

you dumbfuck

Let me spell it out for you, dude.  KU's athletic revenue is ~$74 million.  K-State's is ~$68 million (pretty much an all-time high after a great football season).  KU spent ~$71 million and kept $3 million in profit.  K-State spent $45 million and kept $23 million in profit.  KU makes more money and spends more money.  Get it yet?

yeah, so you don't understand profit.

Okay, explain it then.

Let me spell it out for you, dude.  One school's athletic revenue is ~$74 million.  A second school's is ~$68 million (pretty much an all-time high after a great football season).  The first one spent ~$71 million and kept $3 million in profit.  The second one spent $45 million and kept $23 million in profit.  The first one does not profit nearly as much as the second. Got it?

Well, yeah, that's pretty much what I said.  The fact of the matter is that KU didn't profit as much because we spent more money.  KU still generated more revenue and had more money to spend.  Who cares how much you profit if it's just being hoarded.

um, well yeah, uh, that's, um, what i said.

K-State, we make a ton of money, go to Cotton Bowls, NCAA tourneys, coaches of the year, build state of the art facilities (not pour money into old piss smelling facilities) and don't even have to wear garbage adidas.

And we still keep an extra 23 mill to play with....feels good

Sorry, a few LOL's isn't enough to do this goldmine of a post justice.  Let's break it down.

1.  "K-State, we make a ton of money"  -  not as much as KU, even in your best year ever

2.  "go to Cotton Bowls"  - one solid bowl since 2003, meanwhile KU just won a BCS Bowl in '08

3.  "NCAA tourneys"  - KU has the most consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in the country with 23 straight

4.  "coaches of the year"  - Bill Self was just named Big 12 COY and Sporting News NCOY.  Mangino was AP NCOY.

5.  "build state of the art facilities" - AFH is listed as the #11 overall sporting venue in the world, while the new football complex is considered top 20 in all of college football.  Our facilities dwarf K-State's.

6.  "don't have to wear garbage adidas"  - adidas is great.  KU wears the same style of jersey that is worn in the NBA, and we have a $26.7 million contract that covers all sports.  K-State contract is worth $12.3 million (small-time).

K-State:  Massive Indoor Practice facility  ku:  most if it is an indoor track.

K-State:  Building one of the top 5 basketball practice facilities in all of college basketball.  ku adds a gym.

K-State:  Will soon have over 70 skyboxes (already has 60) and not 1 but 2 stadium clubs.  ku - 35 skyboxes and a doublewide in the endzone.

K-State:  Resurfacing its standalone outdoor track facility (again).   ku-hoping to build a stand alone outdoor track in collaboration with the City of Lawrence, nearly a decade on the drawing board.

K-State:  Baseball has its own indoor practice facility with batting cages, full infield and pitching areas.  ku-indoor batting cages.

K-State Golf:  New $6 million dollar clubhouse, and $500K indoor hitting facility.  ku-a dressing room and an indoor hitting facility.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Adolf "Adi" Dassler (born 3 November 1900 in Herzogenaurach, Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire; died 6 September 1978 in Herzogenaurach, West Germany) was the founder of the German sportswear company Adidas.

Trained as a cobbler, Adi Dassler started to produce his own sports shoes in his mother's laundry after his return from World War I. His father, Christoph, who worked in a shoe factory, and the Zehlein brothers, who produced the handmade spikes for track shoes in their blacksmith's shop, supported Dassler in starting his own business. On July 1, 1924, his older brother Rudolf Dassler joined the business, which became the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory).

With the rise of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, both Dassler brothers joined the Nazi Party.  Rudolf was drafted, and later captured, while Adi stayed behind to produce boots for the Wehrmacht.[2] The war exacerbated the differences between the brothers and their wives. Rudolf, upon his capture by American troops, was suspected of being a member of the SS, information supposedly supplied by none other than his brother Adi.[3]

By 1948, the rift between the brothers widened. Rudolf left the company to found Puma on the other side of town (across the Aurach River), and Adolf Dassler renamed the company Adidas after his own nickname (Adi Dassler).

In 1973, Adolf Dassler's son Horst Dassler founded Arena, a producer of swimming equipment. After Adolf Dassler's death in 1978, Horst and his wife Käthe took over the management. Horst died nine years later, in 1987. Adidas was transformed into a private limited company in 1989, but remained family property until its IPO in 1995.

Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard both have their own shoes, plus there are several other adidas shoe lines, including ones that are specifically made for each college.  KU has several of our own:

Oh, and someone posted some pics a few pages back of some absolutely hideous red and blue sneakers.

Quote
Issue has been raised by some over the classification of revenue minus expenses in this series as “profit,” since athletics departments are nonprofit organizations.  It should be noted, that in the disclosures to the Department of Education, the athletics departments do not report either profit or net income.  Rather, they report their revenues and expenses.  For this series, profit/net income was calculated by subtracting the total expenses reported from the total revenues reported.

Jesus, profit is even confusing for the pros.

How many adidas shoe lines are out there for bball anyways? Six? Five?  I see ku's players wearing like three varieties. Same with the other "adidas" schools.  Love that Nike teams wear elite Jordan 11's and super hyperspeed carbon fiber flywire foamposite awesomness. Adidas treats sports like Nazis. There. I said it.

Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard both have their own shoes, plus there are several other adidas shoe lines, including ones that are specifically made for each college.  KU has several of our own:

In one of the articles on Jamar out there (I can't remember which one) they said we're in the last year of the six-year Nike contract.  Are we going to end up extending that, or are we going to switch?  Will we be able to get another all-sports deal like we have now?

Has anyone heard anything on this?

no one. NO ONE can objectively argue adidas being better than nike. nike being better than adidas in everything is one of the most irrefutable facts in the universe. the ONLY reason why any stars/schools/leagues choose adidas is because they dump boatloads of money on them. only an insane moron would choose adidas over nike if money was equal.

adidas has never, NEVER, made a good looking basketball shoe. not one.
i would rather play basketball in starbury shoes than adidas shoes.
if k-state were to choose adidas i would see it as the single worst decision in the programs history.
all of the sane ku fans i know lament no longer being a nike school and wish they could go back.

i'm sorry, that's just the way it is.
facts are facts.

this guy gets it:
http://www.kansan.com/news/2011/nov/20/lavieri-nike/

i've also heard from ku fans that bill self was furious when ku switched to adidas.

I know it has been thrown out there in passing...

But GTM could be a serious player.  Would it be weird?  Well, no one knows who the hell they are. It would be a huge step forward for them.  But when was the last time you saw KState in a Nike commercial?  I don't think I ever have.  I've seen KU in ADIDAS commercials.

GTM is a $60MM+ local company.  6 year, $30MM deal that includes promotional advertising is not out of their reach.

I'd hate to lose Nike, but would take GTM over ADIDAS.

My point throughout the entire thread has been that adidas is a legitimate competitor to Nike, and the company has grown exponentially in the past several years.  I get it, though... you are K-State fans and you like whatever K-State does.  K-State could wear K-Swiss, and you'd say it was better than adidas.

My point throughout the entire thread has been that adidas is a legitimate competitor to Nike, and the company has grown exponentially in the past several years.  I get it, though... you are K-State fans and you like whatever K-State does.  K-State could wear K-Swiss, and you'd say it was better than adidas.

(cue smart ass who quips that K-Swiss is better than adidas in 3,2,....)
loved all my adidas soccer stuffs.  They just don't hold a candle to nike with basketball and football.

I ditched Adidas when I realized I could spend more than $90 on shoes.  Ya, Copa's are nice, but when the Mercurial's came out...

Adidas couldn't carry Nike's jock in a fork lift (which they couldn't really afford because they don't have half Nike's $$)

Fair enough.  I loved my Copas, such a classic style, I thought about some Predators too.  I'm tainted by Nike tossing money at soccer products only to have them suck, circa mid to late 90s, particularly with goal keep stuff.

But with basketball, nothing better than Nikes.  I think my penny hardaways were the best shoes I've worn.

Penny Hardaways are definitely the best shoes ever made.  They don't make 'em like that anymore.  The new stuff is boring... it's almost like they have regressed since the 90's.

I don't know about best ever, but I definitely rocked these back in the day:

Barry Sanders indoors were what I rocked.  But did I discriminate?  No, I did not.  Also had Grant Hill Fila's and Allen Iverson Answers.

I was just thinking that Fila needed a shoutout in this thread.  I rocked Con's though.  If they were good enough for Kevin Johnson, they were good enough for me
