Title: Guards
Post by: kso_FAN on March 17, 2012, 01:35:04 PM
I thought it would come down to guards and it did. Our weren't bad, Syracuse's were great. Scoop Jardine played like a SR, though I'm proud of how Angel, Rod, and Will played.

exactly.

Especially Will.  I thought we was going to be our biggest liability because of Cuse's size and speed, and he did pretty well.

It would be super sweet if we could find another Rodney and maybe a 4 inch taller version of Angel.

But Jo and Gip's complete inability to convert the myriad of open shots they had was a killer.

mostly agree.  people can talk all they want (justifiably) about gipson's problem keying the zone offense, but the more important issue was kstate's inability to contain su's guards defensively.

and i agree it was more them playing great than kstate defending poorly.

Yeah, we gave up some shots, but they made a lot of guarded/hard shots. I really am having a hard time being upset.

How can you disregard the countless quick breaks started by Gip's butter fingers?  That had to account for a significant amount of points.

I didn't see poor defense by the guards at all.  Terrible defense by Gip, and JO after his foul trouble, but not the guards.

Winning with 59 points would have been pretty hard, imo.

Watching our guards try to guard their clearly superior , longer, more athletic guards: :barf:
We won't be able to compete with the top dogs until we get these types of guards

I don't.

He's got to hit the shots he missed and catch the ball, but he boarded and defended well. I'm really not that disappointed considering what he was thrown into, and anyone who is that upset is being unreasonable IMHO.

The use of the word upset is very telling.  He did not play well.  Drawing a couple fouls early and the occasional rebound against a poor rebounding team is not a saving grace.

Gip is a freshman who is a boards and d guy, if you expected him to play much better in this game you're a rough ridin' idiot. He should have made a couple shots he didn't and caught a couple passes he dropped, but even a perfect game from Gip and we still lose this game.

Oh so he's not supposed to score bunnies? Ok, noted.  And it was more than a couple, he missed 5 layups and 1 dunk.  He also dropped 5+ passes that hit his hands.  It has nothing to do with winning, or emotion.  He simply played a terrible game.

Gip struggled in the 2nd half.   His first half was fine.

first half our guards played about as well as  we can ask.   Tough matchup for us when Waiters and Joseph both of the floor.

He struggled on offense and was not efficient; I already said that he struggled with both shooting and catching. Still, he finished with 8 and 8 while playing MORE MINUTES than he's played IN ANY GAME all year. And Syracuse is a long, quick team, really a bad match-up at this point in Gips' career.

I'm sorry, I'm not going to throw him under the bus for how he played today, it was going to take an exceptional game today for him and he couldn't do it. I'm sorry I'm not shocked (or upset) by this.

He is going to be a fine player at K-State before he's done.

Yes, I expect him to make layups.  Where do I self report as a rough ridin' idiot?  Expecting him to play better, is not expecting him to have a world beating game.  There's more to life than black and white.

Even without Melo, Syracuse is ridiculously long. I was disappointed that we failed to finish a lot inside, but there is a reason Syracuse was Top 10 in 2PT% defense coming into this game.

If they get guard play like they did against us, they are still a Final 4 team even without Melo.

Cuse is loaded with upperclassmen top 100s, they have so many talented perimeter players at least one is going to play well.  I would guess OSU is the only team that could keep them from the final 4.

He's missed layups all year why would it change against Syracuse in the tournament. Gips ceiling is a solid 12/8 guy who plays solid defense and does the dirty work. He went for 8/8 today against a team that lost twice all season gmafb if you expected more than that.

eff it. Lets fire Frank and run off everybody on the team so we can hire a coach from Northwest Hillbilly Tech and bring in honorable mention juco all-americans and 6-5 white guys from western Kansas to play the 5. Would that make everyone happy?

Again, yes layups are expected to be made at a high rate.

The second part is not even worth commenting on.

I know, we're mother rough ridin' Kansas State. I'm having a bigger meltdown from our fans being rough ridin' retards than anything our teams could ever do to me.
