Wondering if anybody has it / figured out a way to stream different video formats (.mkv in particular) and spotify. Am considering, but only if this is possible.
-
jailbreak it
also, airplay
-
I think Roku has been cracked to allow this.
-
if you want a ROKU 2 HD, it's for sale $50

Install Roksbox and stream from your pc.
-
I've started using an LG Smart Tv upgrader and plex - working great and Plex pulls movie posters/info so it doesnt look like crap

did you have to set up a web server to do this?

I have been using Plex on my iMac, which is currently HDMI'd to my 52", however I will be moving the iMac to another room, so I need to stream it somehow. Love Plex.
What is your tv "upgrader"?

why aren't you using an apple tv 2 to do that? airplay son, airplay.

yes, unless you have the XS model. The Roksbox site gives easy directions though. http://roksbox.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53

let me know if it works! :surprised:

you could also look into the wireless HDMI things, maybe it would work

I think people are anticipating a new Apple TV next week, or soon. I doubt it will get any easier to stream content that isn't approved by Big Brother, however. The new Mountain Lion will allow you to mirror your Mac desktop onto your TV.

Now that, that is just awesome. Problem solved!

There is an LG smart tv upgrader box I got off amazon. Some people have been jailbreaking appletv units but I didn't want to eff with it that much. The box is about $120 and the size of a roku. As far as I can tell, it is completely worthless outside of streaming plex, which is fine with me

had one of these. only used for avi files and it worked fine. but if you wanted to watch any streaming video it was super choppy. also don't use this if you want to use tv for monitor.

that's weird. maybe you got a pos one. i'd suspect the main application for streaming through an hdmi extender would be video. how racist.
-
lol, appletv.
-
i have a very low apple tv and streaming in general iq, but how is apple tv any different than streaming to xbox or blu-ray player?
is this just a mac thing?
serious question.

Appletv is worse. No hulu plus.

You can get a bluray player with streaming for under $100

I would like to have access to my entire computer on my tv, ew2x4. Appletv can provide this ALLEGEDLY.

If that's your goal, there are other extenders that support many more file formats than Appletv. Roku with Plex would be best and cheapest, honestly.
-
roku doesn't offer airplay support
-
Correct. You also need a Plex server. But you can also play any file type known to man.
-
i have a smart tv, i just want to mirror my phone/imac onto my television. aTv is the only way to do it in my environment.
roku needs to step up and support airplay otherwise they can go shove a pile of crap into their nostrils.

won't happend. Roku is partnered with Amazon, which makes them a competitor to Apple.
-
so what. if roku was smart, they'd steal customers from apple by offering the same thing as apple (airplay support), and the other crap they offer. it doesn't have to be one or the other. unless google says so. which would be dumbass for roku to enter into an agreement that limits their functionality.

only Airplay can decode the DRM on Itunes media, until they gain the rights to that, it'd be useless. And Apple isn't going to give that away.

my roku 2 is pretty nice i guess no problems for me
amazon looks great

for something like HBO Go or Espn3, or KStateHD, from phone/iMac to television, i think aTv is the best way to go

Glad I started this thread. Some good info. AppleTV it is (sorry ew2x4). :woot:

It's not a bad product. Just limited on things I'd want to do.

google tv
does google tv do espn3? have tried messing around with the display kiosks at Best Buy it will never load.

Uh the movies stream directly to appletv so you don't have to wait at all.

roku just got watchespn. may get one of these to replace my old WDTVLive. Was waiting for the new apple tv to come out but may just pull the trigger.

twc makes you be an espn sub to use the watchespn app, not sure about other providers
-
Is anyone using a roku or xbox as a cable box? I think Roku can do twc and xbox will do comcast

No, it's two years old. The quality wasn't perfect HD, but it was better than running an hdmi cable from my computer.

pretty good news for cord cutters (not apple TV though)

that's not cutting the cord

if you don't have a chromecast you're doing it wrong. couple it with a plex media server. heaven

that's not cutting the cord
it's what the media calls people who don't use cable
-
i realize that. it's still a subscribed bundled service, no different than cable
nvm i get your original point i'm dumb

$20 a month for a handful of channels doesn't sound like good news to me

Xbox ONe has HBO GO, Netflix, Starz, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Watch ESPN, Scorecenter, NFL/NBA/MLB network... etc etc... and a shitload of other channels that still require a cable subscription. They will however be rolling out Sling TV in the next month or two... Does anyone have a rough ridin' clue what that is?

sling tv is what rusty linked. you pay $20 a month and get access to those channels on your tv through your xbox one.

It's the cheapest way to get ESPN without steve dave's watchESPN password.

I think 'clams is object to the thought that continuing pay Dish is "cutting the cord" and a true cord cutting will only come after you can get WatchESPN direct from ESPN.
The Dish sling deal does have the positive no box rental, I am interested to learn how many streams you can use at once.

Do those little over the air HD boxes work well for the main networks? Would be key for me in deciding on this new service
-

any tv made in the last 10 years only needs an antenna to get over the air HD
-
I wouldn't pay $20 a month for ESPN.
Well, if I subscribed to a standard cable package, I'd be paying what, $60-75/month? Basically for ESPN and FS1.
-

Depends on how far you are from the towers. In Manhattan I get a fuzzy Fox, that's it. In Topeka I got everything fine.
And sling TV only allows 1 stream at a time ("for now")
-
Also, little known fact: if you get internet from the cable company, you get local channels free,at least with cox. They are on random channels like 114-4 through 117-2. My newer tv recognizes them, but my older one doesn't.

I used to w/ comcast, but they started scrambling them after about 2 years

comcast just quit doing that a few months ago. At one time offering the ota channels unencrypted (meaning you didn't need a box) was federally mandated but the FCC has started to give cable companies waivers so they can make everyone rent a box. #thanksobama

That's a promo price and doesn't include an HD box (another $10/month). It says months 13-24 go to $45/month and then "regular rates" after that. Which would put you close to $60/month.
Where I live, the cheapest XFinity package with ESPN is $71/month (not including internet).

whoa, dunno why i never thought to try that. i only get one of nbc, fox, abc with my antenna but get 30HD channels over my cox line.
-
-
ESPN charges providers almost 7 dollars per subscriber a month for that one channel. I think the next highest priced channel is TNT which comes in around 1.80 a month.
I remember trying to set up the watchESPN contract for the cable company I use to work for. I believe the initial charge was 10 cents a subscriber per month, and then every year after that it went up .01
-
my watchespn login (my mom's) hasn't been working the last few days for some reason, so i'm going to give this slingtv thing a try tonight. 7 day free trial. will report back
-
also they have deal right now where you can get a fire stick or roku stick free when you prepay 3 months of sling tv. that's almost the cost of the device itself, so if you're thinking about getting one of those, check it out. there is also like 50percent off roku3 and some other device.
-
my watchespn login (my mom's) hasn't been working the last few days for some reason, so i'm going to give this slingtv thing a try tonight. 7 day free trial. will report back
I've been using sling for about two weeks. It's not too bad. Watching the ku game tonight was pretty good at some points, but had a few issues at others, though I think that's more on my ISP than sling, cause SC after the game was very very good in terms of quality. I just think a ton of ku fans streaming the game as I was were turning it off at the end, so I had more local bandwith to use. I'm glad it finally came to Fire Stick TV (which I got when it was $19 for Prime members a few months back). I like the Fire Stick TV pretty well, but i think using the $50 off sling TV deal for Fire TV (and Amazon was running a $15 off promotion recently, so don't know if you could get both to apply) is a good deal, and would probably be better for streaming cause you can use ethernet where Fire Stick TV you can't (especially for google fiber cats). Really, with sling TV for ESPN and buying a $10 antenna to get about 30 local channels (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) for me has made it feasible to just totally drop cable and go internet only. I know that's not feasible for some people but I really don't watch that much TV and paying $20/month for sling + $45ish for internet and having an Amazon prime subscription + OTA channels is easily enough to keep me entertained while not shelling out $140/month that TWC recently raised my rates to before I cancelled with them.
-
Seemed like slightly better quality than watchespn, but at the end of the half the sound was f'd up and not synced so I restarted it and espn wouldn't connect then. So I switched over to watchespn app instead. Might be worth it for March madness with tnt and tbs. If they added comedy central I'd sub for sure

See I had the opposite, mine got better as the game went on (but I did have to recent at halftime). Comedy Central would be pretty cool, but I also watch most of my shows the next day off their site anyways, it's what I did in college and it works for me.
