Title: Wallets
Post by: mocat on February 24, 2012, 10:20:15 AM
I was catching up on the messenger bag thread, and the subject of where to carry your wallet was brought up. I am getting tired of A) the feeling of sitting on my wallet and B) the look of a stupid rectangle bulge in my non-JTKSU-approved pants. What do i do?

I have a bifold but have been considering money-cliping it.  My problem is I carry 4 different credit cards, gym card, health insurance card, DL and bank card in my wallet.  I don't know if a moneyclip can hold all that.  will probably just get a new bifold.  someone suggest a good one for me.

This one is 1/16" thick. You might be pushing it with that many cards, but it still should be better than a money clip.

I have too many cards.  I need to be able to see the tops of all of them so that layout won't work.

The only time I ever, ever, ever have cash is when we have donation friday at work so I bring a $5 to put in the bucket for whatever charity we are doing that friday or in vegas.  Pretty much all cabs starting to take credit cards was one of the greatest things to ever happen to me.  So, I really don't need the clip part of the money clip.

Really great, but they still get pretty mad at you when you whip out the plastic.  I get yelled at and yell back regularly and give them the option of me paying $3 for this $28 ride.

oh yeah, they always raise crap when you pull out the plastic.  I've had them say that their machine is broken and when I tell them tough crap I don't have any cash the machine suddenly works again.  you are just going to have to pay some taxes like everyone else cabbie magee.

I get why SD relies so heavily on cards but I always have to carry some cash or I feel naked.  Also, MIR is a checkbook guy?  Weird.  On the random occasion that I have to write a check, I feel like an idiot trying to fill it out.  I mean, I know how to do it and all but I freeze up for a second when I first start writing.

The only reason I carry any cash at all is to settle golf bets.  I could easily go the entire winter without touching cash.

Well, why do you bother to carry a satchel/briefcase/backpack and not put other stuff you need in THAT?

Seems ridiculous to stuff 800 cards and receipts into your pants pocket, doesn't it?

If you are going out socially, how do you need more than 5 or six cards?

just checked my wallet:

amex gold

gym card
health insurance card
car insurance card
car insurance
2 business cards

I don't think I can pile that into anything that isn't a billfold

I use to do this all the time in class when the teacher is writing out something very long at the end of class and everyone else is frantically writing it down. I just wait until they are done, walk up to the front of the room and take a pic and sit back down.  :gocho:
If it's the end of class why would you sit back down?

I can be smug at times, yes.

What's the point of being smug if you do it while walking out the door and miss the looks on the faces?  :gocho:

I would also email the pics to anyone who asked. I'm not a dick, but sometimes I'm creative/witty and like to recognized as such?

I need 5 or 6 cards.  different cards get different bonuses depending on where you use them.

Do this.  Go get a small binder clip, and put it on 6 cards.  Fits perfectly.  Throw away your wallet, or mail it to Stuns.

You would have to take all of the cards out of the binder clip to find the one you need, then put them back into the binder clip. Nobody has time for that bullshit.

Switch to the single fold. It's much thinner and much more comfortable to sit on. Don't get one with the little plastic sleeves for credit cards, though. Get a larger one that has slots for credit cards like your double fold has.

Do you need to carry all your credit cards with you all the time? Can't you just put the 2 or 3 you use on a daily basis in the wallet and leave the other 10 credit cards at home?

It's best to have all 10 at the same time because if you have a spur-of-the moment idea or some other emergency it's very inefficient to drive all the way home to get your credit card. eff that.

To me, a wallet just doesn't feel like a wallet unless it's in a back pocket. Kind of like a can of Skoal (quit that crap years ago). However, I sometimes switch my wallet to the inside jacket pocket if I need to wear a suit. Bifold, BTW.

i have always done keys front right, cellphone front left, wallet back right.

but now with the money clip i can put it in the front right with the keys and it's not too bulky. so now i don't have to sit awkwardly on a wallet.

have an old fossil "magic" wallet. the magic is starting to wear off, and am open to suggestions to a replacement. need something pretty elite and slim. don't carry too much, some cash, a debit card, one CC, DL, ins card, and maybe any applicable gift cards I have received. (love gift cards, btw, going to start a thread on them now)

also, wallet back left pocket, phone front left (samsung galaxy sIII  ) keys front right (never leave pocket due to push button start and automatic locking/unlocking feature in my elite ride)

I'm actually ambidextrous but I obviously use my right hand to start my car.  I like my keys in the left pocket because I tend to sit with my left leg crossed over my right leg and the phone feels awkward if it's in my left pocket.

Got a new one from a family member for Christmas. It's designed to be skinny, so you can only carry about 7 cards in it. It's great, feels like you don't even have it in your back pocket when I'm out:

http://us.bellroy.com/products/note-sleeve-wallet#video

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.shopify.com%2Fs%2Ffiles%2F1%2F0060%2F5072%2Fproducts%2Fnote-sleeve-wallet-black-1_1024x1024.jpg%3F6691&hash=9dbb62a290a960d2e18579d9873a8dc8eb40ea1f)

Question:  if this was a gift was there money included in it?  My in-laws have this belief that if you give a wallet or purse as a gift it should contain money as good luck.  Never heard of that before.

No, no money in it. Was gift-wrapped while still in case they shipped it in. Fine with me, that wallet wasn't cheap.

Also, no belief in my family that if you gift someone a wallet there should be cash in it.

I've tried a bunch of different wallets/clips.

Tri-fold and bi-fold. Worked okay but so bulky.

Tried money clip and binder clip. Worked okay but I'd have a tendency to misplace due to smaller size area, and didn't like idea of slipping credit cards in there, so tried carrying money clip and a slim card holder. Now I had an extra thing to keep track of.

Got one of those magic wallets from J. Crew:

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.polyvore.com%2Fcgi%2Fimg-thing%3F.out%3Djpg%26amp%3Bsize%3Dl%26amp%3Btid%3D56478648&hash=35876295ddc7f8b182283bd74a58f7057d5a3c4d)

Holds the $$ nice and tight, 2 credit cards + DL + open slot for random card if needed. Can slip in a couple of business cards opposite the $ and it's still less than 2/3 the bulk of my bi-fold with the same contents.

Only downside is that I think the elastic's going to wear out eventually. But you can get them on sale for like $5, so if I get a couple of years out of it I'll be happy.

This thread really took off. I have been using a tri-fold, front-right pocket, with keys. I have small keys. Good not great. I will consider bi-fold now.

How does anybody that's right-handed put their keys in their left pocket? Weird. Your right hand grabs the car remote, apartment door key, work door key, etc. Your left hand can open a text or check scorecenter or call the GF while your right hand does the other stuff.

On roadtrips I will take my wallet out of my back pocket and put in the console or somewhere.  But during the normal workday, it doesn't seem to bother me in the back pocket.

I put my keys in my right pocket but when out but I never leave them in my pocket at home.

mine is sorta similar and i like it, the only thing i dont like is i cant keep cash for very long.  because it keeps it so flat the folds in cash get to be where they almost rip.  so if i do keep cash for awhile i have to keep folding it in different ways so it doesnt fall apart.

I have a very classy brown leather bi-fold that I've had for several years, given to me by WM Bro.

The kicker? It has a powercat branded into it.

Don't your phone and wallet poke you and/or try to stick up out of your pocket when you sit down?

LOL, but actually I think it's more like 40%. The jeans I am wearing right now have front pockets that end above the bottom of the zipper.

Anyone have any experience with something like this?

I have the older version of this and like it.  You can carry about 7 or so cards.  Cash is a little bit of a pain but I don't use it much.  Get a couple spare bands because they will wear out over a year/year and half.  The shipping on them is twice the price of the band itself so best to get when you're buying the thing initially.

I don't get the back pocket people.  I don't want to sit on my wallet all day.

The band should be pretty tight and you won't wear it out as often as I do.  Mine is the thicker one which would require more cards but that one is probably fine.  Throw a business card or sub card in there if you have to.

Keys - front left, wallet - front right.  No practical reason for left vs. right other than that's how I started as a kid when getting a wallet out was more prevalent than getting keys out.  When wearing jeans (most days), phone goes in back pocket while not sitting and is out on desk/bar/table when sitting.  For loser shorts or pants, phone goes in front right pocket with wallet when not out.  Suit days, phone goes in interior coat pocket.

Not sure about wallets, but this is correct w.r.t. pillows. I bought a new one but then had to switch back because it was too thick.

1) I live fairly minimalistic and have basically nothing of significant value. The last time I was robbed (dog locked in the basement) they took about 10 Blu-rays, a laundry basket, a broken kindle, and a broken Xbox360.

2) burglers don't usually pick the house with the snarling/barking dog going all crazy when someone approaches the door.

came in the mail this weekend.  i like it but i don't.  the band has no problem securing 2 cards, but then you have these weird fins sticking up in your pocket.  i've got 4 cards and 2 20's in there and it still needs another card or two so the top is flat.  super rough ridin' light and small tho and i really like that.

came with an extra band too
