under Frank, but we'll never be great either.
OU = CU last year :flush:

OU is worse than CU
-
We are bad. We haven't beat anyone good all year. Alabama is awful.

Disagree w/ first part, agree w/ second.

Alabama is awful.
yeah, they are.
-
Yeah. Maybe a bubble team now. Up and down team. More than usual for a Frank team.

Frank may "love this team more than any since he's been here," but he clearly has less of an idea on what to do with them.

Missouri.
But yes we suck. More losses coming. OU is a bubble NIT team. Wooly level.

I feel like you are melting down for the fun of it and no other reason :jerk:

33 is the best at video and at bbs and at everything, so it's no surprise he's the best at melting down.
-
if only spradling could have found a few more hours to study the scouting report.
And why does he wear that stupid sleeve?
I'm going with he has a problem with his elbow. I'm also going with his elbow is deteriorating and that is the reason why he can't shoot. His career is over. Should start sending out resumes to be an assistant coach.

Frank may "love this team more than any since he's been here," but he clearly has less of an idea on what to do with them.
Absolutely freaking this. Ridiculous that he doesn't trust a core group of players good enough to have a tight 8 man rotation at this point. We're twenty damn games into the season, continuing this substitute science experiment is inexcusable. It has never been like this so late in the season. And if you're going to continue to play shitty players and shitty combinations why not play everyone? No excuse at all for Jeremy Jones minutes and no EMAPE, everyone else played and blew.
-
How is Jones anymore of a liability on defense than Doc is?
Oh, we have a chance to be great with Frank, if he actually starts recruiting better, and I have serious doubts about that.
-
Not playing Jeremy Jones is perplexing at this point.
He's not discernibly worse defensively than the rest of our mediocre guard rotation and we're already turning the ball over twenty times a game, so why not at least get some point production.
I don't understand it. He was the only player to break down OU's zone in Norman and doesn't play a single minute last night? Absurd.
-
Jones has no idea what to do when his player doesn't have the ball.
Still, he probably deserved a shot to break the zone, especially after Angel fouled out.
-
Somebody said he has an ankle injury. Who knows.

Ankle hernia!? :ohno:

everyone that says jones isn't discernibly worse defensively than kstate's other guards is really really bad at watching basketball.

sometimes i wonder if this board is the only source of kstate bball info for some posters.

He's been worse no doubt. If you're a coach hell bent at not having a tight rotation why not try when literally every other guard on the team is struggling in some way or another.
-
everyone that says jones isn't discernibly worse defensively than kstate's other guards is really really bad at watching basketball.
Because by watching a handful of games of limited action you can definitively proclaim that Jones is a considerably worse defender than say, the three guard rotation rotation that got forcibly face mumped by Nathan Pledger on Saturday for 40 minutes.
-
welp Mitch Holthus' Purple Palace goodbye. :clac:

this is what i was thinking. i don't think jones is so bad that he'd give up more than our other shitty guards.
-
Nobody is saying that Jet is a great or even good defender. But at this point, who cares? Our clownshow rotation is already going to turn the ball over 20 times a game. You might as well trade out for a little offensive production and allow the kid a few minutes to go try to improve himself.
But then again, we could always play 4 on 5 on the offensive end and allow teams to pack it in on us as we pretend Spradling is some All-American defender because he shut down Keiton effing Page.

GIVE FRANK A CHANCE!!!!!!!
-
GIVE FRANK A CHANCE!!!!!!!
I'm still a Frankite FWIW. It will take a lot more than this to change that. This is frustrating/disappointing, but Frank has still been good for K-State and I think he will continue to be good, even if this is just an NIT year.
-
i sorta agree with the OP, but to a point. I don't think we'll great in that we win a conf reg season title because it takes frank too long into the season to get his teams playing well and consistently. I could see some big 12 tournament wins and some more ncaa successes down the road though. this regular season turmoil is self imposed because of the roster turnover each year. when you only have 3 or 4 scholarship upperclassmen on your team because you run off so many guys each season this is what you end up till about this time of the yr when stuff starts clicking. least thats been the track record.
to add to that the recruiting at the guard position has been a total failure the last 2 seasons. other than angel (who can't stay on the floor) we basically have 2 star or unrated guys playing there and its killing us. thats all on frank. kudos to him though if he's able to get this mess into the tournament this season, despite the self imposed problems.
-
even if this is just an NIT year.
You shut your whore mouth, _FAN. I expect at least 10 straight years of NCAA tourney appearances from 2 years ago onward.
-
i remember how good Denis was defensively. Lock Down Clemente is what we used to call him.

Sometimes it's good to listen to an outside perspective on these things. Really, though, just making the tournament is good enough for me this year. I have higher expectations for next year's team.

philosophy of KITN and woolitery go hand in hand.

You guys will blow out KU in Manhattan, finish 4th in the conference, and all will be right with the world again. Oklahoma is a lot more talented than people give them credit for, and they've got a very good coach. KU recruited the sh*t out of Romero Osby before we "settled" for the Morris twins. That team has some talent, but I do understand your frustration. I think someone got it right when they said OU is this year's CU for K-State.
-
Brian Rohelder may have been able to shut down Pledger, but how would we know? He. Never. Got. The Chance.

We're not beating KU this year. I actually think we have a better shot of winning @ Baylor than KU at home

You remind me of the nut hangers on phog.net who go ape sh*t whenever someone questions Self. It's a message board... meant for discussion. It's not a contest to see who is the best wannabe head coach.

I have criticized Frank plenty for his roster mismanagement and wacky ass recruiting. But to say that you don't know Jeremy Jones sucks at defense is pretty stupid.

The only time 95% (or more) of fans watch any player on defense is when they are guarding the ball. Jones does alright keeping people in front of him most of the time, of course he usually is guarding an opponents 3rd or 4th best scoring option on the court. Anyway, I can understand why most people have the perception of his (or any player's) defense that they do. It is what it is.

Is his offense good enough to offset his poor defense?

Maybe. The problem with the argument that "Jones couldn't have done any worse on D" is that the defense Saturday was actually good overall. It could have easily been MUCH worse with Jones in the game. The perception is just clouded by Pledger going off. Jones may have been able to make up for it on offense, especialy after OU went zone. I personally would have liked to see him get a shot, but I don't think it's anything close to a given that KSU wins if he does.
-
Frank got OUTCOACHED. This loss is on HIM !!!

I hate this talking point. We've already been pretty damn close to great,if not actually great. Getting a 2 seed isn't something to sneeze at. We'll get there again under Frank.

I feel like nearly all of your posts on this subject have the intent of building up and then burning down strawmen. No one thinks that it would have been close to a given that we won if jones and Southwell played. Do you really think that people are that dumb? The point here is that Frank had three guards that were struggling; one was in foul hell, the other two couldn't do anything else right, and those two have had no sustained success for any game since Hawaii. Yet Frank continues to ram those square pegs in round holes. How much more evidence of Spradling and Irving not having it right now do we need? Southwell and Jones must be the worst practice players in the history of the world.
Also the post defense was very good, it sucked in Norman, the guards defended much worse this time. They did nothing right. The points that KU guards scored were obvious, but there were other things. Those three live worked because we played so far off of the guards when they had the ball because that was the only way we could keep them in front of us.

Still was pretty good defense overall.

welcome back beems

Jones does alright keeping people in front of him most of the time.
no he doesn't. he's gotten a little better, but his first few games, he challenged for among the worst d1 defenders i've ever seen.
when i say he's gotten a little better, i mean he still sucks.

I think if I'm following it's better for Will Spradling to get abused for 40 minutes on the defensive end while he chucks basketballs off the side of the backboard and turns it over on offense as opposed to Jeremy Jones getting abused on defense and turning it over but actually hitting a few wide open jump shots.
Pretty sure this is the main point being made here.

I hate this talking point. We've already been pretty damn close to great,if not actually great. Getting a 2 seed isn't something to sneeze at. We'll get there again under Frank.
The problem is we could wait another 20 years to get a 2 seed at the rate we're going. I have no problem if Frank wants to recruit 2 and 3 star players so long as he develops them. Instead, Frank recruits 2 and 3 star high school players, runs them off and replaces them with juco players who never play.
Counting this year, we'll have had 1 guard that played all four years under Frank that actually made a significant contribution and 1 transfer that played for 2 years. It's incredibly tough to win consistently in college basketball with 2 and 3 star players who are freshmen and sophomores.
And having a really good year doesn't equal being great. Being great involves keeping it going, building on previous successes. It doesn't mean that the 2 years after getting a number 2 seed it's the end of January and fans are questioning how many NIT games the team will host.

We're pretty close to being slightly above average.
Criteria for being great:
5 consecutive NCAA tourney appearances (Not met)
1 EE/FF, 3 SS, maximum of 1 first round loss (Met)
2 seasons of being ranked all year (Not met)
Top 15 ranking in 3 of 5 years at some point (Not met)
1 30+ win season (Have never met)
Limit WTF home losses to 1 every 2 years. (LOL)

Unless you're Duke, Kansas, UNC, etc. there will always be peaks and valleys. Kansas State will never be a consistently great program. There are only a handful of "elites" that can even sniff that. Being consistently good and having the occasional great season is good enough for any rational fan.

just bring your expectations in line with making the tournament every year, this isn't hard.

It wouldn't be too difficult to meet those strange criteria with slightly better recruiting and roster management. Which was my point.

Huh? I've had like two or three wrong predictions in my entire time posting here, and those were mainly due to the fluke '09 football season and Turner Gill. Don't be a hater.

Just off the top of my head, you predicted K-State to beat KU at AFH the last two years, KU to beat K-State this year in football, K-State to beat OU in football and Leach to be HC at KU.

Seems like you think we're pretty close to being great.
(LOL)
It wouldn't be too difficult to meet those strange criteria with slightly better recruiting and roster management. Which was my point.
What's so strange about those criteria?
Also, I think we're on the same page regarding recruiting/roster management. Though I'm not hopeful for either to improve in the near future under Frank.

PS - I predicted K-State would win 59-17. They won 59-21.

This is awesome, though. I predict K-State to blow out KU in Manhattan and I get nothing but sh*t for it. Reminds me of the Republicans in Congress who vote against anything Obama tries to put forth, even it means voting against extending tax cuts.

Sorry, I wrongfully accused you of those two. But didn't you bet on KU last year in the OOD?

Not sure. I've been wrong before. I will be wrong again. I'll always have Briscoe >>> Lamark, though.

I doubt any of the others are claiming they've only made two or three wrong predictions in their entire life.

Whoa... slow down there. I never said that. I said I've probably made 2-3 wrong predictions during my time on this board. I had a great run while I was in school at KU. We went 4-1 against K-State in football and only lost twice in basketball (and I didn't start posting on KSUFans until around '06 - after Wooly). Some of my past threads were also blatant trolling attempts, so it's hard to say that some of them were 100% honest predictions.

I guess they aren't strange other than the fact that they seem chosen solely to support your argument.
Also, I think we're on the same page regarding recruiting/roster management. Though I'm not hopeful for either to improve in the near future under Frank.
What do you base this on? His recruiting has improved and the strategy has evolved, especially since 2010. He would have definitely missed a guy like Gipson or Upshaw in the past. I'm hopeful he has learned that his spring Juco additions have been absolute garbage and added nothing at all.
