@DaveSittler reports #Sooners sources confirm Brent Venables has been offered DC job at #WVU. Mike coming in changes everything, I guess.

Would he ever take that job?  Seems he would stick it out at OU and take a low level HC job.

This would be less than lateral, he would play against OU, he would be moving 1000 miles from his recruiting base.

Maybe he feels there's more opportunity if he gets out from under Stoops' shadow?

Where is the move "up" from DC at WV.  Maybe the Syracuse DC job will open someday if he is patient.

Yeah, the writing couldn't be more on the wall.  Not only is he never gonna get crap while stoops is there, but they just went and hired a second stoops that will be in charge of what was Venzy's gig.

Stoops me once, shame on you.  Stoops me twice, I gotta get the eff out of Oklahoma.

It's kind of a symbolic slap in the face to Venzy because he knows Mike is going to be the real DC.  It's a demotion, and everyone knows it.

So hang for a year, strengthen your recruiting ties, and make a HC move when a good but not great one opens.  Don't take 3 steps back and possibly give up a recruiting pipeline you built.

But if WVU joins, is he really giving up a pipeline?  The guy has been in the area for over 15 years.  He'll still be recruiting here while he's at WVU, presumably.

It's just, I have a few Oklahoma friends, you know?  I also like to read OU boards.  And they all hate Venzy.  Hate him.  Blame him for every defect in OU's game.  They say they want him gone yesterday.  It's a lot like our sentiments of Cosh.   Just a bad d-coordinator.

But then you look at the numbers...and he's got the best defense in the big 12.  OU fans, I don't even know.

Yeah. I mostly want him because:

1) Recruiting
2) He's attainable

Other than giving some young hot-shot-recruiting kid a shot (like when I wanted Snyder to initially hire someone like Major Applewhite or Billy Gonzales for OC first time around), Venzy is our best possible option. And he's probably better than the kids.

He's a young option with a resume, especially if the WVU defense is good, that you can justify to make a head coach.

If he went there for two years and came back as our HCIW, it's a young, well-known face you can build around.  Also, it kind of deflects some of the animosity after 98 since he'll have a chance to distance himself from OU and Stoops.

If we want him to coach here, eventually, this may be a good thing in the grand scheme of things.

Not all of it but recruiting a TX kid to Norman is different than recruiting him to Morgantown.

Wherever he goes, it'll be interesting to see how well he does without Bobby Stoops looking over his shoulder the whole time...

The legend of Venzy is a great way for tucks to rationalize why he and other top notch assistant coaches won't come here.

Snyder doesn't pay a single assistant on staff more than 300k, we have the lowest paid staff in the conference.  Anybody really think Venzy would turn down an 800k annual position at Clemson to "come home".

There's a reason we have guys like Chris Cosh and Keith Burns on the staff and guys like Venzy coach elsewhere.  Let's not overly complicate this.

Time to check in on this thread again.

I didn't see anything this year to shake my belief that Venables wasn't much more than Gilligan on the S.S. Bob Stoops:

Clemson TOTAL D
Clemson SCORING D
He can recruit.  But can he recuit to KSU?  And I know being a head coach is a different skill set than being a coordinator, but he strikes me as even less cut-out to be HC.

No thanks.

Time to check in on this thread again.

I didn't see anything this year to shake my belief that Venables wasn't much more than Gilligan on the S.S. Bob Stoops:

Clemson TOTAL D
  • 2009: #20
  • 2010: #19
  • 2011: #71 (epic collapse year)
  • 2012: #75 (Venables)
Clemson SCORING D
  • 2009: #25
  • 2010: #13
  • 2011: #81 (epic collapse year)
  • 2012: #49 (Venables)
He can recruit.  But can he recuit to KSU?  And I know being a head coach is a different skill set than being a coordinator, but he strikes me as even less cut-out to be HC.

No thanks.

Recruiting prowess is relative. If he can win recruiting battles against USC and Alabama and Texas at Oklahoma, I wouldn't expect him to win beat those same schools at KSU. I'd expect him to beat the likes of Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Missouri. He was known as a good recruiter at Oklahoma because he was a good recruiter, not because he was at Oklahoma - it isn't like everyone on that staff had the same rep.

That said, I've cooled on BV, too, mostly because I don't think he's the kick in the pants that I've become enamored with. Although his beauty would be nice.

He can recruit.  But can he recuit to KSU?  And I know being a head coach is a different skill set than being a coordinator, but he strikes me as even less cut-out to be HC.

No thanks.

i've never been a huge venzy fan, but why would you assume he'd turn the ship around in 1 season?  especially if he's stuck with a majority of the crap players from the previous year?

Time to check in on this thread again.

I didn't see anything this year to shake my belief that Venables wasn't much more than Gilligan on the S.S. Bob Stoops:

Well, great coordinators don't always make great coaches, and if Venzy could hire good assistants, his actual coaching ability would matter much less. It would be pretty great to get an actual recruiter at Kansas State.

He won't go after the coke that falls into the hooker's ass crack.  I don't understand it.  :dunno:
