Title: Baylor?
Post by: uwcatfan on January 09, 2012, 02:10:23 AM
Is it wrong of me to expect to win?  I mean, I just don't see any circumstance in which Scott Drew pulls it out in the OOD, and yet, and yet, it's like I'm still so scarred from Tan Tom and Wooly that I can't believe we're a consistently top 25 program who wins these type of game regularly.

It will be a fun game. Baylor is playing the best defense they've ever played under Drew. They've really only had one road win of signficance since Drew has been there, winning at Texas in 2010, so beating us in Manhattan would be a pretty big deal for them. Plus they were one of Frank's traditional shake your head home losses in 09.

Agreed.  Was also running over the odds of going undefeated at the OOD in confy play after Sunvold mentioned it Saturday.  Seem pretty doable, yet we've never done it before, and the stumbling blocks (as you mentioned) have often been inferior teams in the FM era. Maybe this is the year.

It's very early to start thinking about an undefeated home season. History suggests it will not happen, especially when you add in an extra confy home game this year.

Home records vs current B12 teams under FM:

Baylor   1-1
ISU      3-1
KU       2-2
MU      5-0
OU      1-1
OSU    1-1
aTm    2-0
UT      1-1
TTU     2-0

Total   18-7 (72%)

Kenpom gives KSU a 9.95% chance of going undefeated at home in the remaining 8 games
If we beat Baylor Tuesday, the odds jump up to around 16.5%

Thanks for the breakdown.  True that it's very early to look ahead, and I might still be riding the crest of Saturday's game.  Still,  I'm going to be feeling very good about this team if we can get it done Tuesday.

curious to see how you think Jones and Acy will fare...

they'll get their points.  rebounds too.  i like both of them as players.  baylor can score.  the problem is their zones are crap.  they looks good against crap teams because they are so long, and they get stats nerds like _fan all excited about holding lamar to 0.65 ppp, but good teams tear it apart.  then baylor has to go man and they aren't a great man team because they spend all their time practicing zone.

i like their 1-3-1 better than their 2-3.  the 2-3 is crap.

their other problem is that their guards still turn the ball over constantly.  they've got one guard that can shoot, one that can defend and one that can handle.

Was that really necessary?

I think we'll be fine against Baylor. Their defense is better this year, but I agree a lot has come from destroying bad teams. They do have some decent wins and I'm a bit impressed that they've shown they can win a couple grinder type games like they did against Miss St and aTm. Granted, I think we're better and we'll win, but still this is better for Baylor than they've shown in the past.

The Baylor zone with Acey, Jones, and other long armed athletic human beings is the best it has been, so McGrduer aggressively driving to the elbow of the zone and hitting some mid-range will be important. Of course, if we just hit some 3s and get them out of the zone I think we're in better shape. Chances of this slim though. This has to be the most angry environment their playing in to this point. My EMAW says we edge it out and win by 6. My pocket book, if filled with gambling available cash, says Baylor.

Bold and daring predicto: Jamar commits 2  :bang: fouls in the first half, that, combined with 1 foul of commission, puts him on the bench midway through the 1st half. Baylor dunks on bitches with ease. We trail by 8 at half. Over/under on Stan Weber mentioning us being a second half team is set at 6 (I'm going with the over).

I expect to see a lot of the 4 out 1 in by KSU.  Pulling the zone, especially if it is the 2-3 away from the baseline.  Eventually we will get a lot of easy looks from the vacated area.  Rod is good in this area, as is Martavious.

We have handled 2-3 zones well lately as well. Frank's high post offense against a 2-3 is pretty good.
