there are three coffee shops that are very close to where i live. actually within about 2 blocks from each other.
two of the shops are named the same thing. and owned by the same person. the third is a starbucks, but i never happen by there unless i'm going to the place next to it for dinner. even if i go to that place for dinner i might not walk by the third coffee shop because there is another route that takes me to the dinner place and i like going that way, sometimes.
every time i walk by coffee shop 1 and coffee shop 2, which is quite often- as in almost everyday, there are a lot of people just hanging out. they look like the same people i see shopping at urban outfitters.
some will sit inside and surf the web/work on their laptops. maybe studying? some read the newspaper. some sit outside at the tables and just chat with each other and drink coffee, they act like they know each other. i know for a fact that the people at coffee shop 2 know each other, at least some of them. a bunch of them ride their motorcycles there and park them out front in a long row. usually there's a few standing around looking at one of the motorcycles and discussing it with each other.
why do they hang out at the coffee shop?
admittedly, i don't drink coffee and truly believe it's for cowards so the only time i go in is for a smoothie (yogurt [lowfat frozen], orange, banana [strings] {frozen}, strawberries [seeds]).
i always look around at them while waiting for my weekly smoothie (sundays) and wonder what they're doing it and why they chose a coffee shop to do it at. seems like a terrible place to work, study, or meet people.
would love to have someone shed some light on this phenomenon for me. unless i'm given a good reason as to why they're there, i'm going to continue to assume the worst about these people. a couple of sundays ago there was a really hot girl at coffee shop 1 at the bar next to the window surfing the web on her mac book pro. i'll assume she was there for legitimate purposes.

I, personally, have never understood the obsession with coffee shops. I've never seen anyone besides losers there. Sorry I can't help you out, pissclams.

wow. not the kind of response i expected. from, you.
-
the internet can't hold your hand through your entire life. just pick a rough ridin' urinal and move on.
-
I'm guessing most are underage, religious, or have gone through AA. Thus, instead of hanging out at a bar like normal people, they hang out where there is no booze to drink.
Also, hipsters tend to want to be seen where other hipsters can see them and thus have "cred". No better place than the local piss water coffee shop

I wonder what half the people in LA do all day. Always people out during the day. Not from the service sector either. Lots of nice cars, white collar-y types just out.

people in LA don't really work a lot. i think most are just naturally rich.
-
Yeah. Being rich in LA is like uni-brows in the midwest. Just happens. No matter how hard you try to get rid of it, people can still see it.

Yeah, I didn't mean it. I've been stuck in troll mode ever since the pigaggie invasion. In real life, too.

I think the OP is just yet another example of how the NBC sitcom Friends changed modern society. I have been around these types you referred to before and I think they hold the characters of that sitcom in high regard and try to emulate the character's lives in their REAL lives.
-
free internet

free internet
i considered that. and there is some truth to it. but it's not the answer. b/c there's still a ton of hanger outters without a lappy.
also, there's a lot of places that have free internet now. like the giant library down the street. and chipotle. and mcdonalds. and most bars. and parks. and is it really free when you're paying $6 for a Grande coffee in a venti cup with 2 pumps hazelnut, 2 pumps vanilla, 2 pumps caramel, 2 equals and 4 sweet and lows filled to the top with cream, with extra cream on the side, double cupped with no sleeve, a stir stick, and stopper put in the top?
no. it's not free.

this holds some weight. i saw a girl with her haircut like rachel's at coffee shop 3. but coffee shop 3 also has the highest concentration of african americans. don't remember seeing to many aa's on friends!
-
maybe it's like a bar to people who don't drink? I have no idea.
-
who cares. not me.
-
who cares. not me.
wrong thread. loser.
-
Weird question to ask. Coffee shops have been a place to meet people and exchange ideas ever since coffee made its way across the ocean. You would be surprised at how much was accomplished during the enlightenment at coffee shops.

hey piss, how do you like that clown suit you're wearing courtesy of ugly_?

weird response to respond. the place isn't a meeting place or an idea exchange, it's a coffee shop. sorry you're so dumb you didn't know that, across the ocean. hey guys, lets skype on our mbp's. i'll be at coffee shop 1, you go to coffee shop 3. ok, go!
-
maybe they are more quiet than bars and being there by yourself is less sad than being by yourself at a bar.
Dunno, never been to a coffee shop before.
-
dumbass
-
The motorcycle gang at coffee shop #2 is very wtf.
-
I hate people who read books in a coffee shop. Why are you reading a book in a coffee shop. Is your home so horrible and smells so bad that you can't concentrate to read a book at home? Just read at home loser. Why on earth would you sit in a coffee shop and read all by yourself? WTF? Go home and read. Are you waiting for someone? Doubt it.
-
when you start a thread that makes the local news, you get full of yourself. you start to get lazy as a poster. before long, you're starting threads that ask, "which urinal should i use?"
-
it's the costanza phenomenon.. if you read/play on lappy at your house you don't feel like you've done anything productive. but if you go "out" to do those things you feel like you did something..
so basically, 7 bucks for latte and a scone. 3 hours of pretending to be productive but mostly just people watching. and trying to look hip. in a nutshell.

this. so glad that someone gets it. also so glad no one can reasonably explain coffee shop people.

yes. i don't understand them at all. they seem to love the place though.

hopefully afraid to out themselves

i've never grabbed my book and headed out the door to a crowded loud coffee shop to go read it.
i've also never wanted to hang inside a coffee shop. how is it different than hanging inside a shoe store, or a grocery store, or a women's dressing room <---dems jokes  but you know what i mean.
the motorcycle gang at coffee shop 2, why not ride your bike instead of sit there and look at it? hmmm.
also, chum1 must be a big time coffee shop aficionado.
-
I love coffee shops. Used to prefer studying there to in the library. Smells better. Plus they usually have fresh muffins (the good ones anyway) for a treat on your way out.

1) Lots of culture and counter culture movements associated with coffee houses for hundreds of years. In the U.S. the beats and folk revival to name two.
2) Motorcycles are cool and so are coffee houses. It's a natural match.
3) You can also get tea at these places. Tea is awesome.
4) Drinking espresso from tiny cups looks and feels very sophisticated.
More?

Once drove out to Bloatsberg to see the beats. Chaos ensued.

In my experience, it's mostly religious (or "sprirtual," whatever) types. I do not understand the appeal, but I certainly don't fault them for it.
To each their own and all of that.
-
Are you sure that those motorcycle guys are actually at the coffee shop? They are usually parked at night, is the shop still open then? Maybe they feel that coffee shoppers are weak and easily intimidated so they doubly enjoy parking their motorcycles there and hanging out nearby? Dunno?
Agreed on the smoothies though, top notch. And you are correct about the coffee shoppers, same people day after day and obviously know each other. I wonder if they know each other in the rest of their lives or they are just shop friends?
-
100% sure that the motorcycle gang at coffee shop 2 is at the coffee shop. they hang out at the coffee shop 2's little uncomfortable shitty tables out front of the place. will try to get pics and post them here.

Dumbass Clams in 1668 "I just dont understand why all these people hang out at coffee shops!?! Do they all hate they smell of their houses?!?"
In fact, a small coffee shop run by Edward Lloyd in 1668 was such a business hub, it eventually became the still-operating Lloyd's of London insurance company.
Dumbass Clams forefathers in 1792 "What are those idiots doing in a coffee shop?!? Do you think they are in a gang?!?"
The role of the American coffee house was the same as those in England: the hotspots for the business community. The Tontine Coffee House (1792) in New York was the original location for the New York Stock Exchange, because so much business was conducted there
-
hmmmmmmm. I think somebody just outed themselves as a squawk, but I don't know enough about coffee shops to tell who.
-
When I go into the starbucks by my office over lunch I see what I'm pretty sure is a blind/internet date about once a week so it could be a good spot for that. There's always some guy or girl at one of the tables and a girl or guy comes in and they introduce themselves and sit down with their cofee and start small talking. makes for good people watching while I'm waiting for my drink. I love spotting and pointing out internet/blind dates at bars as well. Very fun to watch one of them walk out mid date.

just an fyi, none of any of this crap answers the question posted. quit muddling up this thread.
but i'm glad to find out you're a wikipedia donor. maybe soon those idiots' pictures will quit popping up when i go to the site. give more.

Yes. They wear lots of leather pants and often people with dogs will join them.
-
Seems like it would be a good place for drug deals. Out in the open, no one is suspicious. Those bikers are undoubtedly selling meth, although, I'm not sure why they'd want to bring attention to themselves like that.

I bet these aren't your typical "biker" gangs or harley davidson driving motorcycle guys. Probably more of a Cafe Racer set if I had to guess. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Café_racer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Café_racer). Yet another counter culture movement with their roots in the Coffee House scene. Whatever the case, very, VERY cool.

they're not on dates, it's a gang. same guys all the time. "leathers", "ducati", "bmw", "modded ninjas", etc.
they just love to sit there and drink coffee. one guy has a dog. how does it get there?
-
they have dates. dog also has a date. blind/internet date city. they coordinate them because they all have social anxiety disorder and are too scared to go alone.
-
nope no dates. get over yourself. we're all happy you saw a blind date, no one gives a flying F.

the dog's date was probably a double date with it's owner and one of the motorcycle gang

This is quite the mystery, indeed. Is there perchance a motorcycle repair shop across the street?

that would be a terrible place to meet your blind/internet date.
-
no motorcycle shops in the immediate area.

Maybe they just go to coffee joints to hang out since people have been doing it for hundreds of years. :dunno:

Question, are the motorcycle guys you are talking about the same dudes that park over near that chain restaurant named after a southeast Texas city, or are these two separate groups?
-
man, wish I would have been there to see that j-dub
you would have enjoyed the awkward encounter when the barista asked "together or separate."
we were mid-convo. i was so unprepared..
classic first date mistake.
