Title: Let's talk garment steamers
Post by: Trim on December 21, 2011, 08:14:43 AM
I can't iron.  I don't have the patience to do it decently.  I get everything dry cleaned instead.  Unfortunately, I can't find a dry cleaner to do shirts without busting off shirt buttons in the process, particularly the tiny sleeve buttons.

I want to get a steamer where I can hang a shirt up and hold something around the shirt and it makes it look dry cleaned or perfectly ironed.

Price won't be a factor if it can save me from having to take shirts to the dry cleaner and then taking them to a sewing place to get buttons replaced ever again.

Thoughts?

I have an elite Jiffey steamer that I use pretty much every day. GTFOOMF irons!!!! The only advice I have is to not get a cheap steamer.

That's my current system.  The garment steamer is what I'm trying to implement instead.

The non-asian dry cleaner replaced the blue button - the main one right on the chest - with a white one, and it took a month or two for them to make it right.  That's when Ii moved to the asians.  There's a severe communications gap when it comes to me getting them to fix the button-smashing.

I have this:

http://www.jiffysteamer.com/Products/modelDetails.asp?productId=9&steamerCatId=2&basemodelId=2 (http://www.jiffysteamer.com/Products/modelDetails.asp?productId=9&steamerCatId=2&basemodelId=2)

It works really well.  However when your collar starts to curl up or the button seems start to curl, you will have to resort to the iron.

EDIT:  Like SF said, do not go cheap.  This guy is pretty expensive but I got it as a wedding gift.  I use it at least 3 days a week.

Steamers are very useful but I don't feel like there is any replacement for a nicely starched and pressed shirt.  Also, that wrinkle release spray stuff is pretty useful.

It was actually the neighbors thread that reminded me to solicit advice.  I'd gotten by for quite a while with neighbor girls doing the ironing, but I need independence at this point in my shirt unwrinkling endeavors.

That's what I wasn't sure of.  I don't know what attachments are elite or necessary.  Seems the steamboard is critical.  :dunno:

Ironing gets old after awhile.  I used to do it all the time, so much that my roommates in college bought me an extreme ironing calendar for Christmas (google image "extreme ironing").  Steaming is faster, and takes up less floor space.

Not at basketball or getting/retaining endorsement deals*, but at lawyering and goEMAW modding.  We probably both suck at unwrinkling shirts compared to women or jiffy owners.

I have the the little purple shark.  It works ok but not great.  If you're willing to put 200 into it, then go with their thing.

Followup: is the jiffy good enough to work on pants and I could just toss the iron?  I may be willing to spend the 200 if so

if you can then maybe just buy a steam dryer. it works fine for what I need it to work for and you won't have to take up extra space with that weird named jiffy thing. its the holiday season and they go on sale all the time at Sears, lowes, and home depot. Samsung, LG, etc. just a thought. I'm sure you could buy one and try it for a week and take it back if it doesn't do what you need.

I just can't imagine wearing work clothes that haven't been ironed.  Steaming gets the wrinkles out but doesn't press the stuff.  Guess if you want to look like Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone or something.

yeah. kind of agree. it really depends on what your definition of " work clothes" is.

I'm talking about shirts that can be worn with suit and tie, or with slacks for business casual, or untucked with jeans.  Suits and pants get dry cleaned.

Just to be clear, I'd be ecstatic with a dry cleaner who can press the shirts without destroying the buttons, and then I'd forego the whole steam thing.  In The Bag, Sarah's, and now whatever the actual name for the Asian place on North Broadway is are all out.

I haven't bought the steamer yet; we can talk competent Wichita dry cleaners here too.

I have the the little purple shark.  It works ok but not great.  If you're willing to put 200 into it, then go with their thing.

Followup: is the jiffy good enough to work on pants and I could just toss the iron?  I may be willing to spend the 200 if so

The first 2 I looked at were $60 and $150.  Can't imagine spending $60 on something that's theoretically 40% of the product of other stuff out there.  $200 seems absolutely worth it if they work as imagined.

Trim, dude, get in here.  You just gotta learn to iron, bro.  It's really not that hard.  And what are you gonna do when you travel?  crap gets wrinkled...no matter how careful you are.  You can't just pack up your new Asian dry cleaner and take her with you.  That's racist.

How else am I going to use up all those BA miles?

Costco jiffy thing is only $140 with shipping, tax and non-costco-member surcharge.  Going for it.

Every single time I read this thread title I read "garment streamers" instead of "steamers"

I just wanted to get that off my chest.

It's been sitting in a corner of my place weeks.  Finally tried it out today.  Definitely not as good as what would come out of the dry cleaner, but all buttons are intact.  I think it'll work better spending 5 minutes on a shirt as I need them rather than saving up a bunch to do at once as I did today.  Gets boring.

Interestingly, the Asian dry cleaner that had most recently been smashing my buttons boarded up out of nowhere one day.  There's a handwritten sign that says they'll be back and for now they can be phoned, but it doesn't really say what for.  Maybe I can get one of them to come to my house and jiffy my shirts right here.  :dunno:

I've had to use a new dry cleaner for non-shirts.  I may give them a shirt that still has its spare buttons intact to see how they do.  If that works out, maybe we can raffle off Trim's game-used garment cleaner for a goEMAW philanthropy.
