Title: Apples that are too big for the apple slicer
Post by: Emo EMAW on October 19, 2011, 04:15:01 PM
Hey there fellow EMAW's.  It's that time of year again when the magical honey crisp apples start arriving after journeys from such great places as Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New England and upstate New York.  Now let me tell you, I absolutely adore these apples.  The tarty sweetneess just overwhelms my palette and injects these feelings of nostalgia from my completely normal and very happy childhood.

Anyway, this fall I've run into an issue.  These apples seem to be getting bigger, and this year the batch is so big that they don't fit into my apple slicer.  Sure, it works, but I usually end up with scraps of skin and some smashed in sides, which really ruins the experience for me.  So I was hoping some of you had run into this problem before and had come to some logical and pragmatic solution.  I just don't know how I'll go on (even with 7 and 0 Cats!!!) without my honeycrisps.  So, I patiently await your suggestions.  Thanks.

To clarify, this is the kind of slicer I use:

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pastaqueen.com%2Fhalfofme%2Fimages%2F2008-01%2Fapple_slicer_01.jpg&hash=06594d39b41791987cf0d3a411434cec59069ece)

It was given to me/us by my mother in law, so if it doesn't get used....well, we don't want to go there.

Don't let them get you down, it is a fantastic device.  Have you tried cutting the apple in half with a knife then cutting the halves with the slicer?

honeycrisps aren't tart sweet.  they are supersweet with some balancing acid and an extremely coarse-grained, crisp texture.

i swear, the apple tasting notes on this site seem to get worse every year.

I love it when sys takes a break from the Pat Bosco Basketball Extravaganza to come over to the Combo-Fanning board. Always a treat.

they say that so honeycrisp eaters can feel more sophisticated*.  people don't like to admit that their taste preference is for really sweet stuff.

* - not intended as a knock on honeycrisps, which i like.  the texture is amazing.

I have several stupid friends who think these are incredible dr moreau genetic hybrids. I try to tell them it's just an apple soaked in grape flavored juice and then we fight.
