Two point game against a ranked team and a Heisman candidate and you're out in the parking lot sniffing eachother's asses?!

Student section really does suck. It's obvious in person and on the TV. The complete opposite of OOD student section.
-
It's almost like the students don't even care anymore. I have to tell you, I get a little embarassed when I'm sitting watching games with my buds from UCLA, Penn State, LSU, etc.
-
I ended up getting GA tickets because of a few issues, mostly because I was late deciding to take classes this year.
OMG its filled with rough ridin' retards. They don't even understand how to sit anymore! a few tried to toss up :lynchmob: but I don't think they understood it. A few tried and failed at getting the right fingers up and some were even flexing their pointer/index fingers while doing it. Many had no idea what was going on with Mark Simoneau.
Worst of all.......crowd surfing dudes........ :shakesfist:
We also need to quit with the WC crap on 3rd and 4th and short and just get right to the :curse:
We also need to bring back the punt returner's name chant ASAP

90/10 at worst 80/20 and they were put down and told not to do it again and they listened. I had the same bros coming through a few times at the end.

yeah i'm not sure how this hand sign got going but it needs to be killed with fire immediately
we must turn our student section into amputees if necessary
-
the problem is that most of the students were really young during our glory years, so they've never been there. Maybe this will be a week-by-week process, eventually eliminating the idiots via real-life PI?
-
10 years ago I could've never imagined a day where our fans would have to figure out how to cheer for football again. Going through that in basketball was tough enough.
-
I feel good about it, as long as people like Winterz are leading the charge. Man up, kid. It's your generation now.
-
"Back when I was in school the students cheered right!"
:cyclist:
-
I feel like back in my day (the rough ridin' awful years of Ron Prince) we still had cheering figured out. These Rookies were probably 5 or so when the Scheme Doctor was orchestrating victories.
-
Did anyone on here go to school during the beginning of the D0D, like from 90-93 or somewhere around there? I'd like to hear about the transition in those days.
-
the problem is that most of the students were really young during our glory years, so they've never been there.
99.9% of our students weren't even alive during our bball glory years, yet the basketball student crowds are amazing. :dunno:

Winning is fun. It is especially fun when it is relatively new.

It doesn't take as many people to have an amazing basketball crowd, though. If the students don't get better soon, I say we just reduce the size of their section and make more money. :cyclist:

<=== Was a freshman in 92. Only missed one home game from 92-00. Pretty much saw it all. :ksu:

So how did the crowds change between 1992 and then in 93 when we started winning? Student crowds. I started in 2000 and by that time people had their stuff together.

<--- probably cheered alongside nicname and maybe even hugged him at some point but I'm not sure because we seemed to hug a lot of strangers in 2000

lets not get carried away, it was better for sure, but people still rough ridin' couldnt figure out how to sit down, i mean 5th year students that attended dozens of games could not follow simple instructions on how to sit. thats sad and is still sad today

Oh ya, well you couldn't obey the simple "down in fronts" being shouted from tucks at tables at Top of the Tower Saturday. JFC, I swear you and Iceman were the target of many tucks scorn.

I got an ICAT ticket for the Baylor game (I'm a couple years removed from the university), and also noticed a relatively tame environment. Not that the crowd was spectacular during my years either, but all the students couldn't figure out you step back and sit down, not sit where you stand. That and I had to shove people to get their attention for a high five, nobody seemed excited. Maybe I just happened to sit around a bunch of non-caring faux-LM'ers

It was a totally different atmosphere back then. There was such a buzz of excitement in the air it is hard to describe. You could just feel the team, program, everything improving. We did have to learn how to cheer, but it didn't take long. I can remember that we would tear down the goalposts for any victory, and we were damn good at it too. I mean, we tore them down after a thursday night ESPN victory over Iowa State for Christ sakes. We could have both goalposts down in about 15 minutes. The more we won though, the more we acted like we had been there and eventually it stopped until we finally beat Nub in 98. You would show up to tailgate and park where ever you wanted to on the East side. Go in 15 minutes before kickoff and get great seats in GA 10-15 rows up on the 35 or 40(we always made fun of ICAT and back then it was only $20). Everyone was usually pretty paked because nobody gave a eff about booze in the parking lot. We knew how to cheer though. There were no gay ass claw hand signals just raw intensity. We were deafening on defense and quiet on offense except for after big plays. Very few left early, win or lose, especially during conference games. We always felt like we had a chance and wanted to relish every victory. I was at the Copper Bowl against Wyoming. We had bought our tickets through the bowl and our seats were in the lower level around a bunch of locals. They were just amazed at the excitement and intensity that we expressed on every play. By the end of the game they were counting Willie's pushups and doing the KSU chant with us. We even had them Wabashing. They said they came to the game every year and we were the best fans they had ever been around. Like I said, it was a different atmosphere. Everything was new. First winning. Then, knowing you had a chance and hoping to win. Finally, flat out expecting to win. Stadium expansions and upgrades seemed to happen every year, the creation of the big twelve, caused even more excitement and expectation. I guess students now are kind of going through the same thing. I supppose the difference is that when I went through it, there was no precedent. We had never been good. Gameday had never been there. We hadn't beaten NU or OU or UT for eleventy billion years. I guess while the team was learning how to win, we were learning how to cheer. You guys kind of need to learn again I guess. My only suggestions would be to pack the house every weekend with purple (any kind of purple, who cares what a bunch of idiots on a message board say about proper game attire). Be loud as hell. Cheer for the team. Get rid of that little douchebag claw thingy. Lynch Mob sign is cool as long as we are ACTUALLY LYNCH MOBBING. Don't leave early, regardless of the outcome. Most of all, just be proud to be a Wildcat. I'll probably get railed and called a tuck for most of this but that's the nice thing about having been there, I don't care! :ksu: :lynchmob:

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that we NEVER sat down. EVER. (except at halftime if we weren't out in the parking lot paking). (And we didn't call it paking back then but Ikinda like that term) And we didn't high five a whole lot on scores, it was usually a rough ridin' massive dog pile.
-
Feel like Manhattan is underrated as a Saturday gameday atmosphere. #KState student section is ridiculous.
Suck it, old balls.
-
I was there with schreds. Specifically, I was there from '91 to '95 and attended the Copper Bowl as well. Never missed a home football or basketball game during my tenure (and that included some not so good basketball with Dana "Porn 'Stache" Altman). The difference in the football student section between '91 to '94 was astounding. I do not understand why the students aren't coming back into the game after halftime now. The north end of the student section is sparsely full after halftime. There is plenty of time to pak after the game. I just don't get it.
-
I feel very vindicated that I'm not tucking out too bad in this thread.
I really hope K-State lets people start to crowd surf again. I would be EEO if K-State allowed it.
Things we need back ASAP:
1) Punt Chant
2) Getting loud on 3rd down before they get to the line, and especially when its obvious they are changing the play.
3) Sitting back, not down
-
'96-2001
The glory days...but '02 and '03 were amazing.
-
Schreds, loved your post! good stuff
Attended 98-01
NEVER recalled dudes crowd surfing - who in the eff want's a swamp-ass smelly dude hanging right over your face
Remember hugging/high fiving everyone indescriminately
I never left early and when I did leave, I had no voice - ever.
Was it loud?
OU 2000 blocked punt for TD.

Good stuff. I started in 93, and really crowds didn't get great until the mid to late 90s. But like schreds said almost everything was new. Its a different time now and the crowd will be different, but it can still be loud. Honestly, I can't really blame the students, just like I didn't in basketball. I was part of the basketball student decline, but its never the diehards that lead to crowd declines, its the borderline fans. Most of those don't even know places like goEMAW exist and many barely know the difference between offense, defense, and special teams. But when you get good they come and they figure it out and help the stadium get loud. That's why I've never complained about bandwagon fans, at the end of the day you can only have so many crazy fans like us, its when you win and you get the numerous borderline fans coming to games that you get the really great crowds, and when you don't win you lose those. Its not too hard to figure out, its just fun to have some success again.
-
Students seem like they can't ever clap in unison either. How embarrassing is that?
-
Sitting in ksu section for a great cat performance on the road(@UT 07) is like a time travel for this DoD refugee - random fans wool start K S U chant, good for another, etc
-
'01-'04. Glory out the ass.
Lots of points and crowd surfing. Absolutely no dudes, though. Unspoken rule.

Thank you for pointing this out...when did this Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) thing start?
-
Another thing, I was in the SS for the KSU UT game in 06 and it still seemed like the students had it even though we had been pretty bad for a couple of years. I guess it make sense though those kids grew up knowing nothing but KSU being awesome at football, their freshman year we won the B12, then... suckville. Prob. a lot of frustration being let out for those kids.
-

You must lead them young Winters.
LEAD THEM!

Was there '92-'97. Schreds is right. Everything he said was right. East parking was all student parking. But it wasn't empty by any means. Excitement was growing and games were insanely fun. We used to pull the Blazer in with a keg in back and tap hanging out the window. The fuzz didn't judge. They were only there to ensure you were responsible. There was crowd surfing, but it was usually Willie that we passed up at first. Eventually students joined in. I do remember dudes surfing too.
I did join ICAT my sophomore year and became a board member (benefits, benefits, benefits). Do I need to point out that Kirby was our ICAT director? Sat reserved half-court, front row for four years of bball. Had great football seats that were roped off for us because we were usually on the field right before the game. Sent us to away games twice, on the department. Biggest goosebumps I ever had were from watching the student section Wabash from the field. Lived through the Cardiac Cats, watched Anthony Beane, AC/DC, and Ski Jones play. Someone mentioned Altman and the porn stache. Was there for that, as well as Asbury and his super red face and Billy Tubbs getting T'd up and kicked out of the game. Left, right, left, right....all the way out the door. Loudest I had ever heard the (now) OOD until the KU game this year. Lots of benefits for a small amount of my time and still had plenty of time to tailgate.
I feel like I’m reliving some of the emotions I went through with K-State football back then. There is the excitement and nervousness of each game, not expecting the win, but knowing there’s a chance, a good chance. The crowd was great. We stood the whole time, maybe sitting during timeouts. Drink during halftime and back in for the second half. You did hug your neighbor and you didn’t necessarily know them or care that you didn’t know them. We were WINNING! You stayed until the end and the team would come give you props for being there for them. Then, you would rush out to your car to hear how many “Bigs” Mitch would call that win. Hang out until the traffic cleared and head home to get ready for the Ville.
Nebraska had a bunch of badasses. We were doing some promotion for the Nebraska game and were on the fieldn near the Huskers warming up. Our guys looked like high school kids playing against the NFL. But that all changed eventually.
Last weekend on Baylor’s last drive is the loudest I have heard the stadium in quite some time. We need more of that. A lot of people make fun of the “Proud” video. I can’t explain how it makes me feel. I was there for that. That’s my K-State. :ksu:

:ksu:

'00 - '03 & older sister brought me to a couple of games in '99. Students were perfect every year I was there. The stupid ass claw thing was started by the cheerleaders & in fact the cheerleaders had been doing it years before the students ever did - They did it 00 - 03 atleast - but we, students, never did. The only thing I really remember being controversial is "jazz hands" waiting for the first down signal. I've sat in the student section twice since graduating and it was horrible in '05 and embarrassing in 09. Single most embarrassing thing is the claw. HAS TO BE STOPPED. Seriously.... You're motioning for a first down while your D is on the field.... I don't give a crap that your fingers make a "W" & a "C" .... YOU'RE MOTIONING FOR A FIRST DOWN WHILE THE D IS ON THE FIELD.
-
As sad as it is to say, maybe we need a cheer practice for some of these kids to get them back on track.

Quote from Baylor fan:
The stadium, while a pleasant enough place, is not what made the game electric- it was the passion of the home crowd and the intense competition on the field. I've never seen so much purple or heard so much full-throated yelling in my life. I wish we would stop complaining about our coaching, team, stadium and bad breaks long enough to enjoy watching this team play. We may not see this offense replicated in our lifetimes
Even with our suckish student section we still impress. :gocho:
-
.... baylor fans. we impressed baylor fans. Think about that one.

If they came to BSFS, they've been to other Big 12 team's stadiums. It's a pretty cool quote.

Little Dlew crowd surfed at the OSU game in '02.
Also, keep in mind folks, it's hard to gauge how loud your student section was when you were sitting in it. For example, the game on Saturday sounded much louder to me than USC or OU ever did. Know why? Because I was sitting in the student section and everyone around me was shouting in my ears. That's why.
At OU and USC I was sitting in the upper deck where my dad and I could practically carry on a conversation when our defense was on the field because the noise wasn't coming from around me, it was coming from the student section.
Point is, there is some inherent bias.
Also, this thread has been a weekly occurrence on GPC for a decade.

agree and disagree. USC and UT 02 I remember a few times in the SS my ears HURT. I couldn't imagine what the chairbacks or opposing teams heard. deafening.

I can imagine. I'd bet they heard crowd noise that was significantly less loud than what you heard because they were farther away from the source of noise than you were.

This thread took a turn from where I had hoped. Schreds reply was what I was questioning about, and a great post. After that, it devolved into a "in my time" we did this and we did that. I only wanted to know firsthand about the evolution of the KSU student section/ crowd from a little before the DoD on into when we first became good. I don't have any problem with the WC deal or any of that.

It was really loud in the south endzone for the USC game. Probably the most consistently loud game I've ever been to at KSU. You are right though, other games where I sat in the SS seemed louder because of where I was sitting.
Petros Papadakis said that the KSU USC game was the loudest he'd ever heard, and that included Autzen.

Thanks TD Wildcats. I didn't grow up K-State, really didn't give a crap until I was on campus. GameDay vs OU in 2000 changed that. Anyway, it's nice to hear the perspective of those that came before me.

the claw/baylor thing is great if you don't mind looking like a rough ridin' pussy. carry on with it.
-
when i was a student they still played fball games at the old fball stadium over by the student union. then they had to go build the whole in the ground that they currently play in. nothing gets as loud as the old stadium and i honestly wish they would go back to playing all the games there or at least play one major game there a year like ku or something. it would be great and very loud and give us a big homefield advantage. it's also very close to aggieville so people could just walk over and walk back. think i might email john currie about this.

I've struggled with this pretty hard in my years at K-State, but I think I've settled on this:
When 99% of the people do it, the 1% who don't look like assholes. If you can't beat'em join'em.
Plus, it looks kind of cool on TV.

I'm not doing a sic 'em bear claw thing dude. i did it once while close to blackout drunk and i immediately felt like a rough ridin' chode. we just throw that stupid hand sign up as an excuse to not make noise after the play anyway.

We also need to quit with the WC crap on 3rd and 4th and short and just get right to the :curse:
We also need to bring back the punt returner's name chant ASAP
Bet Baylor was pretty pleased we were bear clawing for them in tough situations.
yeah i'm not sure how this hand sign got going but it needs to be killed with fire immediately
we must turn our student section into amputees if necessary
In '03 I only ever saw the band doing it. Through the next few years, GA slowly started doing it, then ICAT. Now everyone does it.
-
Didn't we kind of start the whole First Down! thing in '94? I didn't get there till '95, need history here.
I was in the SW corner quite a ways up vs USC, and the atmosphere was incredible/loud up there. OU blocked punt in 2000 was the biggest single play of the DoD at KSU Stadium. I think after 2003 people stopped paying attention to the football and just went for the drinking in the parking lot. I haven't been to a game since last year, but it's good to hear that the students are picking things back up again. The Wabashing looks great on TV.
I've never seen or heard of this bear claw thing. Sounds :jerk:

Guys, I'm totally lost on this "bear claw" hand gesture you speak of. I haven't been to a home game in a while, but I don't remember ever seeing it (sure as hell didn't do it when I was there). Is there a Youtube vid of it? I have to see this...
TIA

+1. My buddies and I would get into ICAT about 15-20 minutes before gameday and ther was always 1 or 2 rows open right behind the band/tubas. Morons would sit there because they didn't realize the band sat during the game action.
First notice drum major doing the claw thing in '03. Confused. Assumed it was a band thing.

Guys, I think it's pretty clear how this thing started. This picture tells it all:
Band folks sitting around in band practice are discussing the :lynchmob: thing the students are doing and how cool it is. They decide to come up with something similar that they can flash up to other band members as an insidery "band member" thing. Then, one day, a black student notices the band flashing their :bball: (only the claw gesture) sign and thinks, "man, that's almost gangsta; kind of like LA crap" and starts doing after touchdowns, QB sacks, etc. Then the white kids see him do it and say "that's kinda thug, I want to be cool like the black guy: ('cause one of my good friends is black). And there you have it. The Bear Claw is born.
-
For the last 4 years, the students have been spoiled by the Adorable Cats in Bramlage. When I was at KSU, we were spoiled by football, but the BB atmosphere sucked.
As the FB team continues to win, the students will get better.

WC sign looks like you're strokin' an imaginary dong. This must stop now.
Origins? I first recall DS43 making the WC (with no stroking motion) and putting it up to the side of his helmet after scoring a TD in 02. The band took it from there and added the porn stroke.

Is there some way we can reopen ksufans.com on a limited basis so we can, like, host one great thread a year over there? It might teach the kids a little something about the proper way of bbs'ing.
There might be fire code issues or something. :dunno:

Everyone says they have the best fans and best student body in college athletics - that is, until they play in Manhattan. They then realize that we truly do have the best and most amazing student support that exists anywhere.
On behalf of our student athletes, our coaches and our support staff, I again thank you so very much for your loyal, caring, loud and continued support. Our players are very conscious of your presence and talk about it often. It means a great deal to them as it has to me for 22 years.
Hope you are having a great semester.
Warmest regards,
LHC Bill Snyder
