Title: MHK Hiking?
Post by: j-von on September 14, 2011, 10:43:41 PM
It's a good time of year to go hiking so I wanted to see if anybody knew of some good places around Manhattan?  Here's what I know...

- I've been on most of the maintained trails around Tuttle Creek.  They are nice for a scenic walk, but I haven't found any that came close to challenging.
- Fancy Creek by Randolph is great, but I'm looking for something within 5 miles as an alternative.
- Konza is a nice walk, but too maintained and they don't allow dogs.
- The Marlatt Park and trails around "Top of the world" are pretty nice.  There's some decent hills to climb and good views, but it's a little too busy for my tastes.

I'm thinking there has to be some better options that I don't know about.

Just make sure you bring enough granola and that your Teva's are fastened tightly!

Buy a hunting license and get on Fort Riley.  Lots of good stuff in there.  Ya, it's more than 5 minutes, but it's secluded, allows dogs, and you can always find lots of cool crap as you go.

TIA

Breaking Bad has taught me that it's easier to just soak the bodies in a barrel of acid.  Without all the digging I have a lot of extra time so I'm trying to find things to fill that void.

Really hate ticks, which is one of the reasons that I prefer to hike in fall and winter.

Never thought about Fort Riley, I'll have to check that out.  I do like finding cool crap.

it's done a 180. i think the cooler weather helped but i also really just think he needed to water a little more.

It was a mix between a sprinkler system that needed a lot of maintenance this year, and some fungus issues.  Things have been looking better, but I'm hoping after the aerating and overseeding it will be looking good for next spring.

Thanks to Daris for PI'ing me into figuring it out.

Seems like you already listed off all the ones i can think of.

I can think of more but they are all more than 5 mins away unless you want to get real adventurous and climb manhattan and ks hill.

Someone mentioned to me that there might be some out by pillsbury crossing, but I don't know that area very well so I'm not sure where to start.

Ya, I forgot to mention those two.  I like to use the Manhattan Hill trail on occasion which would actually be nice if it took more than a few minutes.  Maybe there's some alternate paths I should explore around there.  I don't think I've ever gone up KS hill.

I've found some pretty interesting areas around town geocaching, but that really takes the nerd factor to another level.

Daris just pulled out one of my favorite secret spots that I found through geocaching.  I usually park beside the cemetery on city streets and then walk to the back where there's some sort of maintenance road.  Behind that road there's a forested area with lots of trails and other cool stuff.  I don't know if a lot of people know about it, but I've never seen anybody else back there.  There also may be a better way to get there, I can't remember.  I'll go back through my geocaching spots and come up with a few others.

couple of thoughts...

1) once saw a "copperhead" during a hike on those trails while i was a junior zoo keeper. be careful is what i'm saying.

2) dumbfounded by the fact that there is a disc golf course in warner park. just absolutely dumbfounded. so not believing that i had to look it up. sure as crap...

3) in looking for the warner park course also found this. i mean seriously, is mhk turning into disc golf capitol usa?

4) disc golf pak will happen. not tomorrow. probably not next week or next month. but it will happen.

Both are actually really well thought out courses, IMO. Plus they're both < 2 years old I believe. The only problem I have is that Warner needs to be mowed more often. There's tall grass everywhere and you find yourself looking for your disc more than you'd like. Great courses for when you don't have time/energy to play Tuttle.

River trails are good for a walk or ride

any of these other trails (besides Fancy Creek) you could bike on?

Hopefully Big Poppi gets their trail plans rolling out by Ft Riley.

MODS, please change the title of the thread to "MHK Outdoor Activities"

You can bike on quite a few of the ones mentioned I think, it just depends on what kind of riding you like.  The River Trails are definitely the best that I know of in town for a serious mountain bike ride.  I like something a little faster and wide open so some of the trails out at Tuttle work good for that as long as you don't ram into an elderly person.  There's also a few detours off of Linear trail that are pretty fun, you just have to explore a little bit to find them.

Here's a PDF on the River Trails in case anybody didn't know about it.

It connects up with those (they may be the same?) and you can get to Warner Park from there. You can see the disc golf things from some of the trails. It is called old military trail because it used to be the road from Ft Riley to Ft Leavenworth. It actually starts behind Arby's, if you turn left on the road past Arby's there is a little parking lot up there for it.

The trail itself sounds a lot like linear trail with a little better scenery especially when the bald eagles are around.  I'll take my bike with me next time I'm over that direction and check it out.

Went to play the Warner Park disc golf course today with the dog.  It was a lot nicer than I thought it would be and it had a good mix of tight shots through the trees and wide open shots.  Now I guess I need to buy a set of discs to play with.

Thanks, I'll check it out.  I've played some courses out in Colorado, but the difficulty level is usually pretty high so the KS courses seem like more fun for a beginner.  As far as discs, I might just order these with my Amazon Prime

Tried to play that course a few weeks back. Way too hot outside and WAY too hard. Not kidding, 600 feet would be considered a short hole on that course. Don't bother playing it

j vonfeldt, there's a great disc golf shop here in kc if you're ever in town.  also a v good course near ok joes bbq off of rainbow.

Disc Golf world. Best store in KC to buy discs. The store is owned by an older dude named Rick. If KC is the Mecca of disc golf, than he is friends Mohammed. He once told me that him and his buddies were like an early group of roaming Christians trying to get the game on its feet in the 80s. His business has really picked up the last few years as the game has grown, which is good to see. Real nice guy, although I haven't seen him in years since he has an employee that works there now (or he sold it to the guy? IDK)

Also, that course you speak of is Rosedale park. Actually it's off of Mission road. It has 2 courses, the main course is awesome and they've held national tournaments there as well, but the "Down Under" course is a must play just for the experience. It's like in the woods on the side of a hill and very challenging, but very fun.

centennial park in Lawrence is my "home" course and my fav course of all time. once played it a two under, if you asssume all holes to be par three. was just an incredible day. in cred I ble.

Played that once like 5 years ago. Kind of difficult to navigate, but good course.

edit:

Other "Must play" courses in Kansas City:

Waterworks:
Favorite course of all time. It's in a quite park 10 minutes past the downtown airport, and it overlooks the city. Challenging, but rewarding if you shoot well
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=86

Swope Park:
By the KC Zoo. Really like this course.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=1890

Prairie Center:
Most played course for me since it's closest to where I live. Kind of a frustrating bitch sometimes, but it's a well maintained course.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=881&mode=rev

Shawnee Mission Park:
One of the newer courses in town. Back 9 reminds me of Colbert Hills because its kind of elevated and tall grass lines the perimeter of each hole. Easiest of the courses that I've listed in this thread.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2574

Those are probably my favorites, take it FWIW.

man i just love centennial park though. have played it prob a hundred times. kind of weird that you thought it was difficult to navigate. hole in one'd the 11th. have played most of the kc ones and agree that the down under is worth doing for the experience.
