MHK Hiking?

It's a good time of year to go hiking so I wanted to see if anybody knew of some good places around Manhattan?  Here's what I know...

- I've been on most of the maintained trails around Tuttle Creek.  They are nice for a scenic walk, but I haven't found any that came close to challenging.
- Fancy Creek by Randolph is great, but I'm looking for something within 5 miles as an alternative.
- Konza is a nice walk, but too maintained and they don't allow dogs.
- The Marlatt Park and trails around "Top of the world" are pretty nice.  There's some decent hills to climb and good views, but it's a little too busy for my tastes.

I'm thinking there has to be some better options that I don't know about.

Buy a hunting license and get on Fort Riley.  Lots of good stuff in there.  Ya, it's more than 5 minutes, but it's secluded, allows dogs, and you can always find lots of cool crap as you go.

Breaking Bad has taught me that it's easier to just soak the bodies in a barrel of acid.  Without all the digging I have a lot of extra time so I'm trying to find things to fill that void.

Really hate ticks, which is one of the reasons that I prefer to hike in fall and winter.

it's done a 180. i think the cooler weather helped but i also really just think he needed to water a little more.

It was a mix between a sprinkler system that needed a lot of maintenance this year, and some fungus issues.  Things have been looking better, but I'm hoping after the aerating and overseeding it will be looking good for next spring.

Seems like you already listed off all the ones i can think of.

I can think of more but they are all more than 5 mins away unless you want to get real adventurous and climb manhattan and ks hill.

Someone mentioned to me that there might be some out by pillsbury crossing, but I don't know that area very well so I'm not sure where to start.

Ya, I forgot to mention those two.  I like to use the Manhattan Hill trail on occasion which would actually be nice if it took more than a few minutes.  Maybe there's some alternate paths I should explore around there.  I don't think I've ever gone up KS hill.

I've found some pretty interesting areas around town geocaching, but that really takes the nerd factor to another level.

Daris just pulled out one of my favorite secret spots that I found through geocaching.  I usually park beside the cemetery on city streets and then walk to the back where there's some sort of maintenance road.  Behind that road there's a forested area with lots of trails and other cool stuff.  I don't know if a lot of people know about it, but I've never seen anybody else back there.  There also may be a better way to get there, I can't remember.  I'll go back through my geocaching spots and come up with a few others.

couple of thoughts...

1) once saw a "copperhead" during a hike on those trails while i was a junior zoo keeper. be careful is what i'm saying.

2) dumbfounded by the fact that there is a disc golf course in warner park. just absolutely dumbfounded. so not believing that i had to look it up. sure as crap...

Is this the same thing as the Warner Park area/trails? Why is it referred to as the old military trail?

Both are actually really well thought out courses, IMO. Plus they're both < 2 years old I believe. The only problem I have is that Warner needs to be mowed more often. There's tall grass everywhere and you find yourself looking for your disc more than you'd like. Great courses for when you don't have time/energy to play Tuttle.
