Anyone else a bluegrass fan? Winfield is about to start, wish I could go.  :frown:

i'm sure i'm considered a bluegrass sticker fan, but whatever steve martin & the steep canyon rangers do i seem to like.  like the sound of bluegrass in general but the aimless, non-melodic stuff just sounds to me like "!!!!!!..!!!!!!!..!!!!!!!!"

I enjoy the old stuff as well, but most of my experiences have been with the newer high energy "mudstomp" stuff, which I like a lot.

Set my mind to go every year and then something gets in the damn way.  Check out Big Smith Band, the good folk here are captured in the song Trash easily found on YT.  Their earlier stuff is the better IMHO but think they may have a new CD I've not taken in yet.

Enjoyed this. Also, cool band name. Although most bluegrass band names are pretty neat.

Split Lip Rayfield
Whistle Pigs
Cletus Got Shot
Honkeysuckle
Carrie Nation and the Speakeasys
Mountain Sprout
Deadman Flats

All neat names.

Excellent choices above.  Split Lip and Mountain Sprout are great.  Another group I've been into lately is Trampled by Turtles.  They put an interesting take on the genre, and do so tastefully.  The Wilders are also fun to listen to, and truly have a good time while performing their music.  For those who are into "jammy" music, Yonder Mountain String Band is fun to listen to.  I'm seriously contemplating making a run to Winfield this year.  Last minute-style!!!

This is probably my favorite Trampled by Turtles song.

I'm also fond of the below contribution by the Fast Food Junkies out of McPherson, KS.  Pretty popular group down at Winfield.  They play with that "Stage Five Sound" that Split Lip Rayfield popularized.  I dig 'em.

It's like you are the squack version of me.

If you end up making it out to Winfield check out "Tragic Prelude" at the fine time camp stage. They are buddies of mine and I recorded their last CD.

My friend just messaged me from the fine time stage.  He sent me a picture of the lineup for tonight and I saw Tragic Prelude on there.  Awesome.  I'll have to PM you about recording stuff.  I'll send you some youtubes of the group I'm in.  We're looking to record something soon.

Yeah I live there now.  Can vouch for its eliteness/size ratio.  10 local breweries in a town a little smaller than Topeka.  Very active music scene, esp. bluegrass etc.  Lots of outdoor activities, like whitewater, mountain biking, hiking, etc.

Verse
There's a gun and there's a bottle
You may swallow bullets or the whiskey
But I won't ever swallow my pride

Seen a blood red sun and sky
red dirt and dusty fields
Stain my boots and cigarettes
blind my burning eyes
(Repeat 2x)

Chorus

Roll my wheels
Grind my gears
Shoot my guns
Gonna kill my woman

Rollin my wheels
Grind my gears
Shoot my guns
Gonna kill my woman
Kill her cheatin heart
Gonna Kill her cheatin heart

Kill her cheatin.....(mandolin solo)

Repeat chorus...(banjo solo)

Repeat chorus.....(washboard)

Repeat chorus.....(slow and heavy on the mountain twang and tell the dancing hippies to scream and chug their drinks)
