I still remember growing up with my dad as the music professor at K-State and playing center for the Indians before going to wrestle in the hillbilly mountains and finally moving back to KC to teach kindergarten close enough to tailgate at home games.

Thank you for making me aware of the fact that I do not give a eff about the color of C-hall.
Later, I went on a walkabout during the end of the bush years and kept a journal and wound up in Seattle where everything just kind of crystallized for me.

Was in town in the 60's. Hippie. Did a ton of LSD. Moved away. Reappeared many years later with mental problems. I heard more about him, but that's all I can remember.
But remember that kid (true) insomniac who was constantly walking around, listening to his walkman. Skinny, brown hair. I talked to him several times because he would go into the bars at night to chat with people.
If I had a "my high school/town" thread everyone in that town/high school would know exactly who I am. Enough do already. :blank:

How much do you guys love/hate the Manhattan Free Press? It's a rough ridin' nightmare. I mean, I like sitting around the Shop Kwik near Alco and reading it/drinking coffee with my grizzled old buddies as much as the next guy, but wow, just wow. It's so bad. The pictures are hilariously awful and I can usually find a typo in a headline within about ten seconds, which is really good. Anybody else worried that out-of-towners stop at our Dairy Queen for a brazier and see the Free Press, then think it's our real newspaper? I kind of think that's the leading cause of our small-time perception.
Thanks for keeping us out of the SEC, Manhattan Free Press. :dubious:

Toured the new MHS construction and it is by far the most elite facility in the state. I haven't been to every single 6A high school in Kansas but after seeing MHS 2.0 I can absolutely guarantee it. Just crazy. Astonishing. Wow, just wow.

"Marvin from Mars" was the bald guy.The bald guy in the red hoody was Russ. He like Diet Shasta. Also, said he used to word at NORAD and would sporadically go missing for weeks at a time.
"Aggieville Bill" was the skinny guy with the headphones. All he listened to was train sounds.
Any one remember "Blind Bob" or the "Cat Lady"?
Also, I pooped in the entryway under C Hall.
Go Mustangs!
I'd heard Blind Bob took a header off of the top steps at Mae's one time.

There used to be a store (short-lived, I think) in Aggieville, probably around the early to mid 90s. It was on the block with Pyramid and Hunam's. It was kind of a junk store, I think, but I'll never forget that it had boxes and boxes of old, used pornos. Some Playboy, some of those weird storybook Penthouse Forum knock-off porns. Very scarring for a young SB. What was that place? That's GoPowercat.com!

ATTN TOWNIES-
Quick question. While I was in school I lived in Manhattan full time, 3 summers and nearly all of winter breaks. Obviously I will never be an "Official" Townie but do I qualify for partial townie membership?
Thanks, I'll listen off air.

The LHC Bill Snyder of MHS Tennis
Dear Former Ihndzz Tennis Star SkinnyBenny,
The Mercury has an article today about the "new" boys' tennis coach at MHS--Joyce Allen. Chuck Kipp, who had succeeded Bob Kelly who had succeeded Joyce Allen, took a job as an assistant principal in Garden City. Apparently, they couldn't find any other teacher to take over and the schedule didn't work out for any of the rule 10 candidates, so Coach Allen is back in charge.

Did not realize 8manpick was an MHK'r. :surprised:
I like the way they name stuff in MHK.
"What do you want to name this creek?"
"Wildcat Creek"
"What should we name this party spot?"
"Wildcat"
Carnahan
My favorite was Rosencutter Rd., aka Rosencutter. (Another increds creative name, btw.)
Hey, where should we party tonight, you guys? I mean the cops totally busted The Rocks last week and Wildcat the week before, so let's just go out on this weird dirt road that leads to the dump, pull over in the middle of the road, and tap the keg. Why not.
Did not realize 8manpick was an MHK'r. :surprised:I completely missed this. How old would Joyce be these days? 70s? If you were a teacher how could you not jump on this gig? Best coaching job in the high school!

Proud MHS Indian (Class of...'03?)/KU Mangino protege A.D. Mayes has just been named some kind of an offensive line coach (maybe grad assistant?) at Ohio State. Leaving Rice. Not that anybody should be surprised though, just another stud MHS alum on his way to doing stud things.

Went for a walkski in Anneberg Park (not "Annenberg," lol) and there's a bridge over Wildcat Creek now into some big ol' new residential area that I didn't even realize I was there. Great news for our exploding city, looks like lots of stud newer houses. Didn't think to check closely enough, though: was it built over the old MHS'r party spot known as Wildcat? Inquiring minds want to know.
8 days in MHK was so good. So good, you guys. Did so many old-timey MHK things but sprinkled in some new, too. Can't wait to come back.

What a joke. That school is full of teachers who do drugs with and without students. Full of teachers who seduce and sleep with their students (true personal experience). Full of faculty and staff that cheat on their loved ones with each other. Full of hush hush scandals that get swept under the rug to 'save face', ESPECIALLY if you come from, or have money! This article as well as that high school is full of sh*t. Just saying.

Prime suspect in custody in Cape San Blas murder
The son of a woman found dead in her Cape San Blas is in custody as a potential suspect in her murder.
Jarrod Powell Slick, 23, is in custody in prior arson charges, but has not been charged with the murder.
The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office revealed new details in the murder that occurred Sunday afternoon.
After receiving a 9-1-1 phone call at 1:45 p.m. ET, deputies found victim Renee Coffey, 52, of 7525 Cape San Blas Road unresponsive in her home.
By the time first responders arrived on scene Coffey had expired from undisclosed injuries.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s unit from Pensacola was dispatched and processed the crime scene.
The 9-1-1 call was placed by Coffey’s son, Jarrod Powell Slick, 23, of Port St. Joe, who was charged with two counts of arson and two counts of burglary in the burning of a Port St. Joe Masonic Lodge in December 2012.
Slick was out on bond, which had been paid for by Coffey.
Slick has not yet been prosecuted for the arson, but Slick already faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $40,000 if convicted.
Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison said that Slick was questioned at the scene and then taken to the Sheriff’s Office where he was arrested shortly thereafter.
“This was an isolated incident and there is no public threat,” said Harrison. “We believe we have our prime suspect detained.”
Coffey has another son who lives at the residence, but he wasn’t home at the time of the incident. Coffey’s husband is currently deployed in Iraq, but has been notified and will soon be traveling back to Gulf County.
“It could happen anywhere,” said Harrison of the incident. “It just happened to happen at a very visible spot in this county.”

You still people talk about this place quite a bit. Didn't they stay open right up until just before they demolished the buildings to make the mall?

Almost as cool as that former MHK'r that was the bears QB coach for a hot minute.

Also just as an FYI, if you knew Coach Steve Clark back in the day (now he's in Wichita, I think), his kid played for Oregon when they were in the 2011 championship. Also Clark was recently racially profiled in Wichita.

Came across a Blue M yearbook earlier this week. Items of interest:
1. I realized that I had Booyah!'s dad for geometry. He was sort of a pseudo intellectual just like Booyah! One day, I was just sitting at my desk, listening to the lecture and he walks by, taps the book on my desk and says, "Closed book, closed mind, eh?" I was furious. I went like half of the year without missing a single point on an assignment or exam. That rough ridin' bad person.

First class of ap history my teacher sees I'm not taking notes and informs me that she's never had a student pass the class without taking notes and I'm just like whatever. End of the year comes and I haven't taken a single note all year and got the best grade in the class and she apologized that she was wrong (kinda weird apology, more like an acknowledgement).
She's the only teacher I went back to see after high school though, I liked her a lot.

I'm sketchy on the details, but there was another girl in sys's class who went to play basketball for Wichita State. She married a baseball player there who signed a big MLB contract and then didn't pan out. Something like that. Again, this is really sys territory and you'll have to ask him about it.

Wtf is a birthday beatdown?
also love that matt walters is giving him the bizness
U should absolutely be ashamed of yourself. U don’t have the first clue! Don’t try to tell anyone u do. The coaches u work with in your area should slam the door in your face! #pathetic
his wife is a lawyer as well and also someone who seems very capable, knowledgeable, smart, etc. i would absolutely 100% not want to be on her bad side or go up against her in court or whatever.
How soft have we become that you can't even do a little light hazing on the high school football team. Good grief.
also I don't think this is really over yet.. http://1350kman.com/school-board-takes-no-action-on-schartz-relinquishes-decision-to-superintendent/
“The USD 383 Board of Education has a strong policy against hazing — hazing is a crime,” school board president Darrel Edie read in a prepared statement following an extended executive session with fellow board members, superintendent Marvin Wade and a phone conference with an attorney from the Kansas Association of School Boards. “The board also has policies concerning the supervision of students. Given the situation is under review of the county attorney and given the serious nature of the allegations and given a student was injured, it is premature for the board to take action.
“In the interim, the board directs the superintendent to insure the safety of all students in our educational and extracurricular programs. The mission of the USD 383 Board of Education is creating a safe and positive learning environment.”
Wade followed.
“At this time Joe Schartz remains employed in his current capacities in the district,” he said.
If I were Schartz I’d resign then go to junction and kick Mhs ass every year

Hazing. (a) Hazing is recklessly coercing, demanding or encouraging another person to perform, as a condition of membership in a social or fraternal organization, any act which could reasonably be expected to result in great bodily harm, disfigurement or death or which is done in a manner whereby great bodily harm, disfigurement or death could be inflicted.
I have coached against Schartz regularly and he is a very good coach. His teams are disciplined and play hard. From what I know, he seems like a good guy. This incident seems pretty unfortunate. I also know as a coach you can't know about this type of stuff and let it go on. Eventually the wrong kid will be involved and if something goes down it will fall on you. It sounds to me like the school board spent significant time talking to their lawyers and realized at this point they don't have a case for termination, but this is far from over. There is still stuff going down with the legal system and they will let that run its course. I feel bad for the guy because I think he does well for the kids and the town, but if the serious charges come through, the district and school board will have to have a fall guy.

i don't think getting beat up on your bday is hazing, just battery.
Now that the police investigating is complete, the case will be submitted to the County Attorney’s Office for a determination on charges. In addition to the original battery offense, a supplemental report has been completed for endangering a child and contribute to a child’s misconduct. Police released no additional details.

I don't really think you can not know about this type of stuff and let it go on, either. Part of your job as a coach should be knowing that every single one of your football players is getting beat up on their birthday.
I've known Schartz since we were kids. I've got a laundry list of problems that I have with what goes on in this school district but Schartz isn't on it.
I think if he takes the fall for this then it's an absolute travesty. This is battery and they should go after the kids that escalated this thing.

yes it is, let's hear them!
This wolf or whatever would be a second mascot.
I'm in town for a couple of days. Parents definitely filled me in on the hazing/battery. Also say that some want a different mascot. A wolf or something to run on the field instead of an Indian.Yeah, what sort of dumbasses came up with that idea.. I can’t ever remember a mascot running on to the field ever anyhow
Sounds like RD had it coming to him. My gramps did crap like that back in the day to his students. It was a different world back in the 70's/80's/early 90's.
mine were only funny experiences.. like taking a greg marn weightlifting class and him doing a bunch of situps and then telling me that it helps out your wang. also my freshman year I can't remember his name but I had one of the teachers tell me yla you think you are the crap when you are just a little turd.. I don't think he expected me to laugh so much and I still use that line from time to time.. same teacher also got busted for stealing computers though
if as an adult, you ever come to learn about nip size rumors of 15 year olds, you're doing something incredibly wrong in life
I'll wait until known MHS stud Dugout Dickstone weighs in but I still feel like this is way overblown.
I spent an insane amount of time there as a kid. Sad to see.Summer Adventure?

Summer Adventure?
Yeah. It was an elite summer camp for sure. Swim at the nat everyday, recess at Ahearn, lunch at the Union, and "classes" interspersed throughout the day. Whoever came up with that program was brilliant. I believe it got cut because of lack of interest which is astounding.Summer Adventure?
Oh yeah. Pretty awesome that townies were able to use all of those super nice university resources.
