Title: pancreatic cancer / soda
Post by: j rake on April 06, 2011, 11:44:47 AM
Been drinking at least 60 ounces of soda / day for the last five years. I plan on kicking the habit today — like, I will never, ever drink soda again. But I'm afraid it's too late. My pancreas is probably already destroyed.

I'm 24. What are my odds of living past 40?  :frown:

I called my mom earlier for reassurance, and she told me not to pay my student loans and to max out my credit cards.

I asked her why.

"Because you won't live a day past 30."

Mom's not thinking straight. She should be advising you to use student loan money to pay off the credit cards. Miles are a transferable asset.

Try one of those detox diet things.  Or maybe apply for a new pancreas.

I read that two cans of soda per day can increase your risk of pancreatic cancer by up to 87 percent. Since I drink a little over double that, I figure my chances are probably quite good of getting it. Of course, only 13.2 out of 100,000 men get pancreatic cancer each year, so that's encouraging.

But I hate that I can't "undo what's done."

Start drinking about 2 gallons of water and a glass of 1% milk every day. Never drink soda again, especially not diet. Let us all know how it turns out.

Every soda I consume probably increases my chances.

I know, I know. I'm counting on a miracle.

Dude.....just go out on your own terms.  If your pancreas is shot, it's not coming back.  In your case there's no benefit to quit drinking pop.  You will likely end up prolonging your death by a decade or so and live the rest of your days miserable and possibly in pain.

It's just like smokers who keep smoking even after they have lung cancer.

You do realize that the 87% increase in risk is based on a lifetime of drinking 2 cans per day, right? Still, I'd say you have about a 20% chance of getting it. Get on the water and milk diet before it's too late!

RECENT STUDY!

The use of aspirin at least once per month is associated with a significant decrease in pancreatic cancer risk, according to results of a large case-control study presented at the AACR 102nd Annual Meeting 2011, held here April 2-6.

well nevermind on that then.  Do they make robot pancreases?  They should by now with the technological advances these days.

^^^^That was just a rhetorical question, don't bother looking robot pancreases up.  I'll just stick with eating piles of aspirin, if that doesn't cause brain melting or spleen explosions or something awful.

As far as I can tell, there is no drug you can take to reduce your risk.  It is more about avoiding the risk factors (if possible).  Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (the most common type of pancreatic cancer) is resistant to current chemotherapies.

I had hoped to live until 125, but now with this soda thing, I'd probably settle for 35 or 40.

As for how I want to die . . . wouldn't mind falling through ice.

Meh, stomach cancer is rare enough that even increasing your odds by 700% (requires a genetic anomaly combined with heavy drinking) only gives you a 6% chance of actually getting the disease.

Which is more rare, stomach cancer or pancreatic cancer? I'd Google it, but there is way too much misinformation out there.

I'd much rather get my info straight from a guy named Nuts Kicked on an anonymous message board.

Stomach cancer is more rare than pancreatic cancer. (http://www.yourdiseaserisk.wustl.edu/hccpquiz.pl?lang=english&func=show&quiz=stomach&page=table)

You are more than likely a fatass if you drink that much soda per day so you will probably die of something more related to being a fatass before your pancreas craps out. Although your pancreas crapping out could be related to being a soda drinking fatass, but I don't know, not a dr. :dunno:

I'm actually a bit underweight.  :surprised:
it's because your body isn't taking the nutrients you're giving it, it's starting to shut down from the chemicals that are loaded into the soft drinks you force into your system.  sad...

I think it might have more to do with the fact that I run about 5 miles per day and don't eat fast food.

Also, I don't give my body nutrients. I eat candy all day.

bet it's also because of the constant diarrhea you must have.
