TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Basketball is hard => Topic started by: mellinger on February 19, 2010, 01:13:20 PM

Hey guys, Sam Mellinger here from the KC Star newspaper. Been covering baseball, but now moving to sports columnist, where I'll hopefully be doing more K-State stuff (along with the other schools). Pete was nice enough to invite me over here to introduce myself.
I really hope we can all have an open communication, that we can always be fair and understand where the other side is coming from. Communication with people nice and interested enough to read my stories has always been important to me.
I'm at [email protected] or twitter.com/mellinger.
I have a KSU column or two in mind, but am always open to suggestions, tips, comments and questions. Looking forward to getting started.
Thanks for reading this.
-- Sam

1. Basketball recruiting information
2. Don't care about the rest tbh.
-
unless your first column is an expose about SLTHs, then I am not interested.
-
since this is the "getting aquainted" period, I must ask. Were you ever called "smellinger" growing up?
-
Hit us with your bio Sam. Education, arrests and local KC hotspots you frequent.

Also, Sam, which local media person could you beat in a fist fight/wrestling match?
-
it's probably hard to do columns on kstate bball recruiting all the time, but you should really, really try.
-

I am also a sucker for a good SLTH discussion.

Someone is going to have to explain to him what SLTH means, otherwise hes going to write a column on Cat fans liking sloths. Guess I don't see a problem with that cause sloths are pretty cool.

Just another kellis lawrence dork covering teh qhatz:
Sam Mellinger has been a sports writer at The Star since 2000, covering major league baseball and the Royals since 2006. He's won a few writing awards, which he credits more to his editors and low contest standards, but his mother remains impressed.
Besides baseball, Sam loves college basketball, the absurdity of sports, wings at The Peanut, and his friends. This will be primarily a Royals and baseball blog, but be prepared for other stuff you may or may not care about.
Sam started this blog in February of 2008 for a couple reasons. He wanted to create a place for stories and anecdotes and other stuff that don't fit in the newspaper, and hopefully have some fun along the way. Hopefully it's worth it.
Besides, if you hate it, Sam has given you an easy way to make fun of his blog. Just use its initials.
The Star was Sam's first job after graduating from Kansas in 2000. Before that, he worked at the Topeka Capital-Journal and Cincinnati Enquirer. His first job was at the Lawrence Journal-World, where he was so big-time at age 16 that he typed obituaries for no pay. Like Biggie said, Mo' money, mo' problems.
Sam grew up in Emporia and Lawrence, where he was part of the greatest sophomore basketball B-team in Lawrence High history. He now lives in downtown Kansas City.
Writing this in the third person made Sam feel a bit too much like Rickey Henderson, but it seems to be how most of these "About" explainers are done, so whatever.
-
He doesn't need me to stick up for him, but Sam is extremely good people. Talented dude.

He's terrible.
-
I give him the benefit of the doubt over Kellis because Dobesinger didn't formally run an anti-KSU blog that he lied about and then immediately took down while insulting everyone's intelligence.
Also, he doesn't beat his wife.
-
I want an in depth investigation on improper benefits given to referees.
-
He doesn't need me to stick up for him, but Sam is extremely good people. Talented dude.
his "i'll introduce myself, but not bother to respond to replies in my introduction thread" attitude doesn't support this good people agenda you're pushing.

I'd guess that he's down at spring training and, you know, working at the moment. But that's just my guess. :)

hey, no one forced him to introduce himself. unless, i guess, you started such a trend that eagle*star sports writers are now being forced to introduce themselves on kstate message boards.

Did someone else actually do that? Did I do that? Don't remember...

I don't think you introduced yourself. Just jumped in with a link iirc.
-

yeah, i don't think so either. you just started a trend with kstate journalists posting on message boards.

If you post recruiting crap you find out every once in awhile on a blog or pm I'll drive to KC or Wichita or what evs and help Kellis clear his crap out. We could probably have it done in an hour.

This is starting off about as well as Kitchens' 'fans debut.

No, it's better than that.
Kitchen has since redeemed himself...the problem there was WHO introduced him.
We saw Sam's post on GPC and invited him to come over here as well. Jmart vouches for Sam. That's all we need to know....any katpak'r knows that much. :kstatriot:

false. he has shown himself to be even worse than anticipated.

Obviously, I am ill equipped to argue with you, and I will not attempt it. However, I think we can agree that it is beside the point at hand, which is that Jmart has vouched for Sam....clearly this means that Sam has either killed a man with his bare hands, or he good a writing/drinking/katpaking and stuff. Either way, I am paying my respect.

Not judging him. Just objectively observing that this is not a terribly strong start.

mellinger sucks ass.

OK, well, I'm sure I'll forget some good questions but in no particular order...
* nobody ever put the smelly thing together until I got my first e-mail address. I blame Al Gore.
* went to KU, and please don't hold that against me. Here's some more material you can make fun of me for: poor penmanship, questionable personal style and an uncanny ability to lose cell phones.
* anybody who disputes the awesomeness of Peanut wings should be treated with skepticism. I dig the laid-back sports bar type of place (Quaff is a good place with an old-school pop-a-shot machine). Live around the corner from the Phoenix, so that's a good spot, too.
* haven't been arrested in weeks.
* J-Mart, I owe you a beer or three.
* turkey, I guess.
* and, well, I'll bite...what's SLTH?
OK, I'm off to spring training tomorrow but will be back in the neighborhood the week after next. I'll get on here and other boards from time to time, but if there's anything you want me to see for sure send it to my sterile e-mail: [email protected] or look me up at twitter.com/mellinger
Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to this.

mellinger, kerkhoff's last article on alec burks was factually inaccurate. burks didn't commit to colorado as a junior. if you are committed to truth, justice and americanism, you need to either force a retraction from him or you must ridicule him mercilessly.
this is an important test.
-
SLTH=Solid Long Term Hire. It is what everyone said K-State should have hired instead of Huggins and then Martin. Lots of "Why didn't they make a Solid Long Term Hire like Mark Fox or Greg McDermott!?" (BzD, Sadler, Turgeon, etc.).
-
Also, Mellinger's intro to goEMAW is going much better than Kitchen's to ksufans.
-
True. But in Kitchen's defense, that wikipedia comment was pretty devastating (still makes me laugh).
