Title: Arkansas????
Post by: TrayCat33 on March 13, 2011, 08:57:18 PM
Message boards for Arkansas are talking about their top 3 candidates being:  Mike Anderson, Mark Turgeon, and Frank Martin.  Weird thing about this is I had a buddy call and tell me one of Frank's friends was blabbing at a party saying that if Arkansas came calling he would listen and listen closely.  Has anyone heard anything.  Can't say Frank would be a good fit down in Arkansas, but money talks and they have plenty of it down there. :ohno:

They already have a top notch practice facility.  Tons of money flowing in Arkansas.  They are not going to screw up another coach.  They are ready to break out the check books.

But it's a really racist/backwards university and we all know Frank won't tolerate that stuff.

it's really a pretty fantastic situ for an incoming coach.  dece returning talent and a top 25 incoming class that is considered likely to remain.  primed for immediate success and then you have the sec west just waiting to be dominated.

This is what I'm hoping for.

If we lose Frank, Currie will have to answer hard questions that he probably doesn't want to have to answer.

It's in his best interest to keep the guy responsible for more NCAA tournament appearances than all other coaches combined since 1990.

If he loses Frank and keeps Snyder, I want him gone immediately.  Like yesterday.

Pay Frank!!  Could be Frank's attempt at more money.  Bill needs to drop the point 8 off his salary and add it to Frank's.  If Frank makes the sweet 16 this year, he will have to make over 2 million a year.

FWIW:  Currie's best friend at Tennessee=oscar Pearl

tiger board and sports radio had a lot more smoke to the Anderson rumors last week.  Like Anderson pushing for more money.  Now with a crap finish, low seed and off the court issues maybe Mizzou won't be as willing to keep him.  Plus you could pull some sort of 'our guy' 'coming home' story for MA.

If you are an upwardly mobile guy with big aspirations, you do not want to replace a big name coach that has a proven track record of success.  There is an element of risk there that you do not want to introduce into the equation.

Currie is the guy in the tough spot.  Not Frank.  Frank will be blunt about why he leaves if he does.  If Currie has dirty laundry, it's going to get out.

I like Currie, and I like Frank.  If they don't get along, the better start getting along, because I don't want be left without either of them in five years while Sean Snyder still picks his boogers and eats them while collecting checks from Kansas State.

Yes, it's correct that Arkansas has a top incoming freshman class...number 7, I believe...AND the built-in honeymoon of 2-4 years.  So, if a coach were to look at another place to leave to secure his families' future and long-term security, he'd be crazy not to listen.

I'm still somewhat confused how they ultimately ended up with Altman-to-Pelphrey.

I don't really remember the chain of events that ultimately lead them to where they are today.  I just can't remember how Dana Altman ultimately became the candidate of choice a few years back.  It seems like they could have done better, but I just don't remember the situation.

I've often heard HCFM talk about ArKansas and how it's like the most loyal and passionate fanbase in the country.  I never really connected the dots until now.

Also, not sure if ya'll know this or not, but it's well known that Fayetteville has the best knee surgeons in the entire world, and with HCFM getting his upteenth knee surgery just a couple weeks ago, this is starting to make more sense.  Couple that with the fact that Arkansas has more money than Target, well it just makes sense.

Good luck HCFM, we thank you for all you've done.

Pete's right, he'd be crazy not to listen but only because anytime somebody calls you up saying they want to pay you millions of dollars you are a reject if you don't pay attention.

He will leave within the next five years IF we don't start paying him near-Seff salary within that timeframe. And of course he will have to give us a reason to do that. Arkansas is a good job but not light-years ahead of State. Using Arkansas as a stepping-stone to Miami where they would give him a huge guaranteed contract doesn't really make sense. He knows Miami will be desperate for his services but he will have to win a bit more first.

Realistically, where would Frank be on Arkansas' board?  Fifth?  Sixth?

Someone on an Arkansas board said they'd love to have Frank, but their AD was on Pelphrey for his sideline behavior this year, so that wouldn't bode well for Frank.

I think it's fun to  :runaway:, but really, I think the odds of them actually going after him are pretty slim.

I think it's going to be Anderson.  If not him, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is Turgeon.

I have absolutely zero insight on this, but based on the short lists floating out there, AR wants someone with Big 12 ties because they want someone who is familiar with recruiting in Texas and the rest of our geographic footprint.  That's just a guess.  Anderson is #1, IMO, because he's a link to the best period in their history, runs the same style, and will most likely retire there.  He's also familiar with their recruiting territory, and he's pretty much a checkmark in every single one of their boxes.

Seriously…

Frank isn’t even on the radar down here. Bet if you asked 50 Arkansas basketball fans, 40 couldn’t tell you who he is or where he coaches.

I brought up his name to the sports columnist for the daily newspaper in Little Rock, and he said, “No, no no!”

I asked why. He said, “If Frank Martin came to Arkansas, I’d have to report some unflattering things about his past.”

Not sure if it was Miami High related or stripper related.

I told him about Frank being a great coach and how ESPN and the likes can’t get off his nuts.

He said Frank, “wouldn’t be able to cope in the fish bowl that is Arkansas athletics,” because, “Arkansas is unlike any other college. It owns the whole state, and people pay closer attention to the coaches than anywhere else.”

Mike Anderson is the only target, for now, from what I hear.

As noted in the Fake Patty Day thread, PAY FRANK shirts are available in green for this Thursday's St. Patrick's Day tilt against USU.

Even with the amazing search function on this board I was still unable to find this.  Where is this thread at?

Like I said in my other posts.  Look for rumors to keeping flowing out of the K-State Ath. Dept. as they have been until K-State gets bounced.  Looks like Martin is ready to maximize his situation (next few years look to be down for him)and is going to take offers.

K-State admins. are already taking action on a possible replacement if he decides to jump.  Their list so far looks is a mid-major job convention.  It's sad.

The fact that I am a blog writer for wildcatvictory.com, my sister works in the athletic department here at Kansas State, I am an avid poster on gopowercat.com which gets the inside information from people close to the athletic department in Brian Gates, Ryan Wallace (ect...), and I actually attend Kansas State University makes me say that your friend in the ksu athletic department is a liar. There has been no such rumor circulating here, and we are not looking currently for a replacement. Just two weeks ago Frank Martin visited 5 star recruit Perry Ellis to watch his game. Perry Ellis has narrowed his list to 5, and Arkansas is not on it. Just saying if he was for sure leaving for Arkansas, I don't think he would be recruiting the best player in the history of the state of Kansas to go to Kansas State.

If we were looking for a replacement our candidates would consist of Brad Underwood, our assistant coach, and Lon Kruger All-American player for Kansas State/Coach in the 80's. We wouldn't settle for a mid-major coach, even though nothing is wrong with that. Look at aTm with Mark Turgeon (former Wichita State head coach), who is also on your wish list.

I'm not going to get in a pissin' match over who's source is more concrete.  However, my guy is about as high as you can get in the department.  I'd tell you more, but obviously I'm not going to put him in a bad situation.  Every school has a stand-by list of candidates.  You would be foolish not to have one and if you think K-State isn't dusting theirs off you would be crazy.

You would also think a blog writer (anybody who has a keyboard can be a blog writer) would know that just because a coach changes schools doesn't mean he won't continue recruting the same kids to his new school.    I follow recruiting very well, and let me tell you Perry Ellis is very very good.  Very good!, however at this stage he is no where near the best player to come out of Kansas.  Not sure why he would be wasting his time, as everyone knows he is a KU lock.  KU gets whomever they want from that state.

Also, Lon Kruger ain't walking thru that door.  He's been there, done that.

'tucks "with access to inside info" setting him straight.  Boom Roasted.

Every coach has built a house of cards everywhere they go.  Unless you prove that you can go to school after school and create a winner (i.e. Calipari, Pearl, Self, Pitino, etc.), you have potentially built a house of cards with your current job.

If Frank goes somewhere and doesn't have the same level of success he had here, they'll make excuses as to why he had success here and not there.  If Tom Crean doesn't get it turned around at Indiana, it's because he built a house of cards.  Same with Billy Clyde.

Unless you're searching for a top ten coach, every coach you hire is a crap shoot.  If Cuonzo can recruit, he'd be as good of a candidate as any.

The biggest thing with Cuonzo is that he's basically still playing with Hinson's players at key positions.  The other consideration is that he was very mediocre in the Valley in his first two seasons and it's not like the program needed major rebuilding.  On the other hand Frank has consistently had the cats towards the top of the Big 12.

What are some mid major guys that are consistently competing for league championships?  Those are the guys I'd like to take a risk on.

I just want to make sure we keep any Cuonzo Martin enthusiasm in check around here, since John Currie takes a lot of cues from this board.

God, no.  I live in Springfield.  This would be severely depressing for KSU.  Missouri State is not a good team this year.  I'm disappointed they didn't make the dance so they could get exposed.

yeah, regular season champs in his third year. rep as a great recruiter. what a piece of crap.

I'm just afraid he's built a house of cards here in S'Ville.  It's too early to make a call on Martin, Cuonzo.

I agree. This guy looks like the basketball version of Ron Prince, and we all know how that failed experiment worked out.

Doesn't Martin have a huge buyout after this year?  pretty much his entire salary and it decreases the longer he is here.  If Frank goes to Arkansas I'm boycotting WalMart.  That will hit em where it hurts.

You should never buy anything from a massive retailer because their products are generally overpriced and/or poor quality.

Why would I pay $20 for a blu-ray at Target that I can get on Amazon for $15?  Why would I buy a plastic shovel at Target when I can go to a hardware store and buy a steel one for the same price?  Why would I buy undershirts at Target when I can get a dozen of them at Sams?

The only thing I ever walk out of Target with is a coffee from the Starbucks, and if the mood strikes me, a six pack.

My wife buys a lot of make up there, so we go from time to time.

Ah, crap.

Quote
Arkansas cannot hire a coach who has had NCAA issues and is under strict orders from university administration to not consider a candidate who has had any problems with the NCAA. One name that has emerged on the Arkansas radar is Kansas State's Frank Martin, to see whether he might have interest in leaving Manhattan. Missouri's Mike Anderson remains the slam dunk choice to return to Arkansas, but nothing may happen on that front until the Tigers are finished with the NCAA tournament. Anderson has flirted with other jobs before (see: Oregon), and if he doesn't leave for Arkansas -- assuming he's as high on the Razorbacks as they are on him -- it might be hard to see him leaving Missouri anytime soon.
