From AP via Steve Herman: A meltdown would potentially put humans at risk within a 6 KM range. What is a nuclear meltdown? Wikipedia has a good primer. WSJ: Authorities pouring water into reactor to "stop the meltdown."

Not including the nuke plants, you are prob right. If anything comes out of the nuke's, it will easily become #1.
Today show was saying that this could be very close to chernoble(SP). If that is the case, you gotta think that this will not only have an obvious immediate effect but that it could kill most of their exports for many years, if not a couple decades, to come. Who will buy grain, livestock, etc from a place that had so much radiation leakage?
Long term mumped.

Bad would be loss of containment and a release of radiation.
I am way not qualified to help. I can throw a physics book at the plant though.

OK, did some reading on this and it sounds like "exposed rods" are bad and can lead to a "meltdown." However, it sounds like much of this is because they ran out of gas.
Quote
The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), said fuel rods at the No. 2 reactor were fully exposed, which could lead to the rods melting down. The rods, normally surrounded by water, were partially exposed earlier after the engine-powered pump pouring in this water ran out of fuel.
Why is this different than Chernobyl? Is it worse? Not as bad? :dunno:

Sixty-year-old Hiromitsu Shinkawa was found floating on the roof of his house ten miles from the coast of Japan, two days after the tsunami hit his town of Minami Soma.
Incredibly, he was spotted by a maritime self-defence force destroyer taking part in the rescue effort as he clung to the wreckage with one hand and waved a self-made red flag with the other. He had been at sea for two days.
Reports said that on being handed a drink aboard the rescue boat, Shinkawa gulped it down and immediately burst into tears. His wife, with whom he had returned home as the tsunami approached, is still missing.
He was quoted as saying: “No helicopters or boats that came nearby noticed me. I thought that day was going to be the last day of my life.”
Officials said Shinkawa was in good condition after being taken to hospital by helicopter.

it has a better containment system than Chernobyl although without running engines to keep the fuel cells underwater, the core will melt down to the bottom of the reactor vessel and the containment will eventually fail. this could all happen in a couple of days.

The one explosion they keep showing was of the secondary containment. This means everything is still fine and radiation levels released are no more then if you were to get an x-ray. It doesn't affect the surroundings but once it is all over, the reactors will be shot and probably never create power again.

This is closer to what happened at Three-Mile Island than Chernobla. Three-Mile Island lost containment when the rods melted a hole in the containment vessel. The Secondary Vessel contained most of the radiation. Problem with the Japanese reactors is they have lost the secondary containment structure. WHEN the core melts through the primary vessel then the high level radiation will not be contained. It the China Syndrome or in this case the North American Syndrome. If the super heated core makes its way in contact with a large pool of ground water then you will get a big bang. This is not cool

May be old news but here it goes anyway, this accident at Fuku was worse than Three Mile Island a week ago even though the Japanese regulators just raised the level to that "official" level over the weekend.
I have a little knowledge in this area. Nuclear Engineering KSU 1975, I actually worked for General Electric as a test engineer at Tokai 2 nuclear plant 1977 - 1979, an hour and a half train ride south of Fuku. I spent a month working at Fukushima 2 refueling outage during my two year stint in Japan. This accident is not going to get up to Chernobal levels unless they completely screw everything up and multiple plants go to worst case. Japan is just such a small geographical area there just is no buffer area to be had when it comes to the potential contamination. Hope the wind is blowing seaward if it comes to the worst. :crossfingers:
