Title: crap you wish you knew more about
Post by: jtksu on February 02, 2011, 01:14:16 AM
Dog dreams.  My dog makes weird yipping noises and looks like shes kinda running.  WTF does she have to dream about?  Her entire life revolves around sleeping, eating, and shitting.

My dog does this exact same thing.  Almost like he is chasing something.  I did read that dogs dream like we do.  My dog is dreaming about bunnies and cats I bet.  He hates bunnies and cats.

I want to know what Jason Whitlock and Joe Posnanski think of each other.

Both worked at the same paper for a decade, both were hugely successful, both were completely different people, both wrote completely different types of columns. I have always been interested in knowing more about their professional relationship.

Quote
And according to WiPower, inductive charging systems work with about 80% to 90% efficiency -- roughly the same as plugging directly into a wall socket. That blows away the industry average for wired chargers, around 40%. So wireless juice is not only less messy, it's less hungry, too.

The Pyramids (Egyptian, Mayan, etc.)  Also Stonehenge.  Area 52 and stuff.

These are all dumb and obvious.

Pyramids - tombs for kings.  built by people dragging blocks up ramps.

Stonehenge - Big communal building.  Rocks held up boards making a big house thing.

Area whatever - Military base.  tests new secret planes and junk.

in your episode you should introduce yourself as steve dave, he will introduce himself as limestone.  then debunk bigfoot.  then at the end of the episode do the big reveal- you're limestone and he's steve dave.  massive debunking of the viewers would occur and i think everyone would be mindfucked.

also a good closing would be - "folks, until next time on The DeBunkers starring steve dave, stay debunked- unless you require steve dave to debunk you.  have a good night, or is it really daytime?"

Anymore no.  Most researchers these days that do cool stuff like that have their masters, if not more.  A lot of those teams consist of grad students that will do research for the lead scientists.  Also undergrad teaches too many basic principles to be able to apply to specific technologies.

Most of the research assistants at K-State are grad students.  They get credit hours for doing research.  There are some undergrad students that do research, but at a completely different level of coolness.

Thanks, I'll listen off the air.

There are some undergrad students that do research, but at a completely different level of coolness.

could I just get a generic masters degree in engineering while I work and then join one of those awesome teams?

You will need to get a masters degree in a specialized engineering curriculum (Electrical, Computer, etc) and then you will be hired as a research assistant based upon your expertise.  Some research spots may not be as technically specific and will just require a masters degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, and others will be very specific like (Master in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in controls, acoustics, radio waves, etc...)

But yea you can't really get a general master in Engineering and expect to get on a cool team like that.   You need to know your cac.

Example:  K-State Electrical Engineering Professor designed some components that went on the Mars Rover.  He didn't design the entire thing, but he designed parts of it.

I think the role of a researcher on any project is being romanticized a little here, similar to the way that being a crime scene investigator has been through the popular tv show CSI(not the crappy miami one either).

Basically, I'd like to be able to help invent stuff like you read about in MIT Technology review:

http://www.technologyreview.com/energy/32267/?a=f

chings, or some other academic type?  How could I just join a team of these researchers without having anything but an engineering undergrad and make a decent living?

Thanks, I'll listen off the air.
depends on what you consider a decent li

What is the first thing we are going to research and invent or whatever?  I vote for some sort of airline/hotel miles thing.

low level EMP blaster similar to what was used on Michael Bishop in 98 to cause that fumble.  Just think of the basketball turnovers you could cause.

They were way more annoying than they were in Clerks. Maybe the black and white made it less obvious how obnoxious Randall's eye movements are.

OK, as some of you know the goEMAW Think Tank had our first meeting this weekend.  This is what we came up with (this is our working model and there will be some changes to the finished product):

It's a "Leveraged Freedom Chair" which is our take on the sustainable wheelchair for use by disabled people in the develpoing world.  The final product can be sold for $100 -- a 90 percent reduction off traditional wheelchairs -- and uses a lever-driven propulsion system that works better over rough terrain. It uses bicycle parts to keep costs down and simplify maintenance.

Next week, hover cars

Good work guys.

I might suggest a PTO and hitch on the back so they can do some work with the thing.

Guys I want to invent an electric mini van.  You know where the seats fold down into the floor in minivans? I thought of building a contraption that mounted in that space and had peddles to charge batteries that would be stored in the back.  Also a solar panel on the roof would supplement the charging power.  This would also be good for keeping our kids in good shape and not being lazy fat asses.

What's that junior you want to watch a DVD on our way to grandmas?  I guess you will have to peddle extra hard because we only have enough juice to get to the corner 1/2 mile from her drive way.  Start peddling!
