Title: Super Nova (official science dork bate thread)
Post by: CNS on January 26, 2011, 10:59:45 AM
from Jesusland thread: http://io9.com/5738542/earth-may-soon-have-a-second-sun (http://io9.com/5738542/earth-may-soon-have-a-second-sun)

Gotta think that:
1. temps will rise
2. night will not be effected as mentioned in the article due to rotation
3. our communications will be effected in a major, most likely negative, way
4. there will be several suicide cults trying to catch the related space ship
5. Church attendance will double(should develop a scam or "service" to take financial advantage of this)

Of the above, I think my #3 is prob the biggest concern the world should have.

Thoughts?

Night will be effected unless the supernova is located directly behind our sun. It all depends on the time of the year.

Didn't think about this.  Could rotate right from day into another day.  eff.  That would suck ass.

It's not just the bumbling buffoonery of the night/day mixup.  I mean, you have to consider that you spelled bait wrong in the title too.

It's called rapture insurance and I've already got it covered.

Think a loved one will not be raptured up with the rapture?  For only $20 a month we will guarantee an equally unsaved body to stay behind and help coach 'em up so they'll be ready for the second coming. It's only $20 a month to guarantee an eternity with your loved ones.

Commonly asked questions:

Q: What if the loved one I bought insurance for is indeed raptured up     by the rapture? What happens to my money?

A: Be assured that even though you get no refund since you will no longer need money, it is in good hands.

Q: If you guarantee an equally unsaved person will stay behind, how do you know he will teach my loved one the correct steps?

A: Because the equally unsaved one has done everything needed to be saved, but is willing to sacrifice by committing one last sin and not asking for forgiveness just to be here with your loved ones.

I heard of a service last year where people are paying folks to take care of their pets once the rapture comes.  They feel bad that spot will have no one to feed him once they are in heaven.  That is brilliant.

I think shazbot! should be replaced with rapture in the word filter thingy.

"I got all raptured up last night"

"That chick likes to rapture"

"Rapture off, mother rapturer"

( OK, maybe that last one doesn't work. )

1.  No.  A supernova is a star running out of fuel.  They don't get hotter.  Plus, it's really far away.  The explosion is radiation - sometimes gamma (bad), typically neutrino (ok).
2.  The brightness can vary.  It could be as bright as our sun, but it could just as easily be as bright as the moon, which won't really affect anything.
3.  Only if there is a big gamma burst.  At which point in time, we'll all be dead too.
4 and 5.  don't care.

won't happen in our lifetime. Sucks because it would be pretty awesome. Wouldn't be nearly as bright as the sun. Too far away. Orion constellation would get mumped up though.

People who don't like 24 hours of daylight would care.

Hypothetically, you should be pretty happy when your brain surgeon doesn't know about super novas.  Probably means he spends all his time studying brain surgery related things.

If I were you, I would start worrying when your brain surgeon seems to know too much about other topics.

From what I read in the original article, the Super Nova was expected to happen within the next million years, after it happens the effects would not reach Earth for almost 700 years.  Unless you are asking if something similar could have already happened to which I have no idea.

No.  I'm saying maybe it happened 700 years ago and we'll start seeing the effects tonight.
