I honestly don't know anything about the systems sold to do this, but if you turn them off/on in the winter, you are just making sure that you will have to replace your driveway much faster than you would if you bought a snow blower.  Maximizing your freeze/thaw cycles on concrete is the fastest way to make that concrete crack, spall, look like crap, and eventually fail much faster than it should.

A simple thermostat could be used to hold the slab slightly above freezing eliminating any freeze-thaw cycle.

That's a lot of money for a full winter

You turn it off when it's dry. Sheesh

CNS, tell me what exactly to buy because I trust the crap out of you

Real talk: mine is a super cheap plastic one off of woot.com and that is the extent of my personal experience other than my inlaws that doesn't touch the bottom half inch on the drive surface.  Mine works great and is most likely a piece of crap compared to most discussed here.  That said it has the rubber ends and does very well.  So to recap, super cheap and rubber ends and does a rockstar job on 11" snows.  You could probably be happy with pretty much anything but make sure it  doesn't leave the bottom layer.  I would burn my house down if I had to shovel and scrape after snow blowing.

I wonder if they are using geothermal pumps on these driveways.  That would slash costs.

my parents have heated sidewalk and entrance but not driveway. they acted like it wasn't that expensive. it's a small area though. I honestly didn't even consider it.

After a long search betwen craftsman and ariens I decided to go with cub cadet. The dealership was awesome and set up the machine. With my dumb luck I bought the machine the year my area only had a snow fall of 2 inches. The following year we had a decent snow storm of about a foot and a few inches. The 524swe failed me. It initially started and ran perfect. Then out of the blue the chute stopped working. As I pushed forward it would unlock and shift to blow snow in a different direction. I mentioned this to the dealer and now I need to drive it over to them. One "major" storm and the machine has glitches. I'm very disappointed with my purchase. Everything else about the snow blower seems to be well constructed, but at this point I can only hope it holds up.

How do I fix a mailbox post that is wobbly as crap? I have a bad feeling that it might tip over and then I won't get junk mail.

It's a wooden post that holds 2 mailboxes (neighbor and mine). I may try to hold out as long as I can and hope that my neighbor fixes it, but he is foreign (sorry for racist/bigoted post) so i'm not holding out hope.
Where did you get that overnight bag?

can't the mailman still put mail in it when it's tipped over?

That's possible, but i'm guessing since this is one of those mailmen that stay in their vehicle the entire time they deliver mail that they will get tired of getting out to do so.

I could probably arrange w/ them to just leave the mail in the yard?

Dig out around the post (3-4 inches out and  a foot or so down is probably enough), get a bag of quickcrete (like $3), dump in hole around post, dump some water on the dry mix and let it soak in

Depends.  Is the mailman also foreign?

Ok, that doesn't help.  You can probably work out whatever kind of deal you want with the mail man, but you will have to tip him appropriately at Christmas.  Your best/cheapest option is the quickcrete.

ok, w/ quikrete stuff, pour the crap in and add water, how long does it take to set? Like, how long do I need to stand there and hold the post upright before I can start spending my time on better things to do? (video games, boozing, etc)

That's a good idea but we have a HOA who won't take care of broken mailbox posts but won't allow you to do that. (nazis)
