Its like economic Eugenics.  Cut aid and wait until they leave the state.  Building a better KS, I guess.

I've seen the gene pool here.  It's not hopeful.

Well we know he's not serious about the perfect night, unless he enjoys getting booed by an entire stadium of Kansans while with his confused wife

Brownback, despite promising to measure the results of a “real life experiment” in cutting taxes, has decided to cancel a quarterly report on the status of the state’s economy.

Kansas’ gross state product fell behind the six-state region and the nation for the third straight year. (Kansas’ gross state product grew at a faster rate when compared to the region and the nation in three of the five years before Brownback took office in 2011).

Private industry wages in Kansas grew at a slower pace last year than they did in the region and the U.S. -- as they did during the past five years.

The number of private business establishments in Kansas trailed both the region and the nation for the last year, again continuing a five-year trend.

..............

Brownback is now said to be considering tax hikes. He has paid the deserved price for his errors, with a 26 percent approval rating, the lowest of any governor in the U.S. The people of Kansas have paid a bigger price. Undoing the harm will take a new governor and, though it may seem far-fetched, I think he should step down and make way for fresh leadership.

Absent that, all we can do is to call out misguided economic beliefs wherever they appear.

Guys, it's fine.  If we get a super large amount of water this winter and gas goes back up to like $140/barrel, we will be fine.

Also, by "we", I mean like 300 of the state's citizens.

I was wondering about oil.

So, over the last fourish years, KS has produced ~45MM barrels of oil annually.  Had the oil been worth another $20/bbl on average that's an additional $900MM in "sales."  Any idea what that would translate into in terms of state tax revenue?  Even if it meant another 10%/$90MM in revenue annually, that's only like $45 per citizen (assuming 2MM citizens in KS).  Seems piddly.

When the overwhelming majority of your state's economy is based upon agriculture, oil and private aircraft, and all three industries go into the shitter, your going to have a tough time making up that economic output.

The "tax experiment" has had no measurable impact upon the state other than enraging $40k p/yr hayseeds who don't realize they're paying $800 per year less in income taxes, and wasting newspaper print on the de minimis monthly budget deficits (but not de minimis surpluses).

there has been sustained underinvestment, but there is also about nine gillion (new number i just invented) barrels in storage and the north american land drillers can bring capacity online so fast.  seems more like a setup for slow appreciation than another out of control boom.

IIRC in 2015 the State took in around $30 million less than 2014 in mineral tax (oil and gas), which isn't that bad of a drop and is back in line with 2012 and 2013 levels. I also remember that sales and use tax revenue actually went up in 2015.  The only reason Kansas is in the hole is because of the dismal income tax revenue thanks to Brownback's tax cuts.

Now on the county/local level the drop in O&G valuation for property tax purposes has hit them bigly.

I pay less in taxes in Missouri (work there, live in Kansas) than do in Kansas after they took away some of the deductions, even though the rate is a percentage higher in Missouri.

My property taxes have skyrocketed.  Food is a lot more expensive, etc.
