how many starters that return is an overused talking about when you're talking about a defense that wasn't that good in the first place. returning starts is great when those starters have proven to be good, but this defense has been average godawful at best so why would we suddenly expect them to kick ass? one offsesason? nah, man.

Yeah, the defense last year was the worst it's been since Cosh was running it.

The defense as well as the offense are going to be awful this year.  Like crazy bad.

I wouldn't expect them to kick ass.  I would expect them to be further along at this point than the offense which was equally as bad last year.

If Pringle beats his guy by 5 yards, that puts the defender in perfect position to intercept a pass from our QBs.  A little concerned about this.

3) he wasn't able to watch or recognize to many players aside from QBs but he said (and he always says this) that most of the players he saw were small, and don't look like D1 football players. He has been on that kick since the OU game, and he is probably right but I'm not sure he would admit otherwise at this point anyways.

That's all I got, nothing earth shattering but O figured I'd pass it along. He says Vanier is top notch. He hasn't been in a lot of D1 facilities, maybe 8-10 but it's the best he has seen and by a fair margin.

Is the Cal transfer on the team or does he join this summer? Hopefully that helps shore up the back end.

This is pretty good information, but more helpful would be the yards/play and points/play given up by our defense compared to the conference average for that year.  The style of play has changed so dramatically that decades-long comparisons like this have to be taken into account.  In short, offenses are better now than they used to be (and not just because they are going faster, which is already accounted for by looking at it per play).

The coaches clinic is going on right now so there is a chance some tidbits might emerge from that.  At least something other than the woe is me posts that are far too common.

hE, you get in there and you bird dog us some hot scoops.  I am paying a reward for the hottest scoop out there and you strike me as a dude who is ready to collect.

I don't have any tidbits out of there.  I live a long way from Manhattan nowadays.  Only thing I have is personal observations from people that were there and nothing earth shattering or that hasn't already been said.  Pringle looks really good.  Ertz spins the ball really well and had more reps than the other 2.  Could mean he is on track to win the starting nod again, could mean they are trying to bring him back to speed.  Offense was taking the defense to the woodshed at times, again, could be based off what they were running and how they were running it, could be the offense is much better, or the defense has taken a step back.  Guess you can choose the most likely scenario to believe in.  Practices seemed to be less intense than in previous years.  Maybe a philosophy change or they were just dumbing them down because outsiders were there.

If anything, having an improved offense if it is improved) that they can see every practice will help them out regardless. I mean, if you get to see things closer to what you'll actually have to defend instead of hubes doing hubes things that probably helps out a lot, even if it makes you like a damn fool.

How many 3 and outs did we have last year compared to others? I'm sure it didn't help that the D often had very little time to rest and couldn't keep opposing offenses from getting into a good rhythm.

Cedric Dozier, the Cal transfer, still needs to graduate from Cal, so after he does that he should be here in the summer.

Oh, that's a fair point, but I don't have time for that. The acceptable numbers certainly changed as the game changed in the 00s.

Yep, I don't have time either.  The defense that is way "underrated" according to the chart is 2012 defense.  They were a much better defense than some of Snyder's defenses in the early 90's (A. Brown, Meshak, Nigel, Zimmermann, etc.), but the chart suggests otherwise.

I sure do miss Arthur Brown.

Im unclear how the graduate transfer system works.  I just assumed they had to have actually graduated before we could announce their signing.  Curious at what point schools are allowed to contact them...

03 defense had a ton of sacks.  They got to white with 4 pass rushers whenever they wanted.
