They are JJ, Leon Patton, and John McCardle (who isn't really a typical tailback). The only listed walkon tailback is Terry Petrie.

They are going to get a ton of reps during spring ball. If injury strikes, uh-oh.  I remember a game from the Hickson era when we lost 3 tailbacks to bad injuries all in the same game.

Arriving in the fall will be Justin *cough* Woods and maybe Dee *cough* Bell, although he is supposed to be more of a wingback. I suppose you could put Antonio Brown into that category as well -- he could play tailback in a pinch and lined up there once during the season.  Oh, and maybe the kid from Great Bend will end up as a fullback / short yardage back, but you aren't going to see him as a feature back--he's probably more like McCardle.

It's weird -- back in October the Tard Nation was full of complaints that we were taking WAY too many smurf running backs. We ended up with 2 (Woods and Brown), and when you look at our lack of bodies at the position, that doesn't seem like too many at all.

Anyway, the good news is that we have Leon and JJ returning, and they were the best thing about our offense by the end of last season. We just need them to stay healthy.

It's actually Justin Woods.

This kid is amazingly fast.  Known him for a long time.

Prince wants to keep him at the HB spot which is a shame because I think LP is a better back, but I think that Woods would be a great contributer almost anywhere else on the field.

thanks -- i made the edit. who the heck is Jerome Woods?

It's a 12 game season, so the top 3 backs will all get some playing time in the backfield. Prince is smart to keep Woods as a back--he needs the ball in his hands often when he's in there. After JJ finishes, Woods would likely split time with Leon (don't say LP, reminds me of a nubb criminal).

It will also be interesting to see if any of these new guys get a look at returning kickoffs and punts. Did Woods do that in high school?

On the incoming kids I think people are selling Jeremy Reed a little short.  He's got the ability to be a pretty good RB.  He's not a burner but he's  not slow either and he's very strong and has outstanding balance.  I think he'll be more then just a short yardage back.  Of the three RB's we signed last year he's the most ready to play right now and will compliment Patton nicely down the road.   I've seen Dee Bell play and I'm not a big fan of him ever being a RB in the big 12.  Maybe a return specialist or a slot receiver but the kid just has too small of frame to play RB in the big 12.

Reed is THICK. I think his 40 time makes us all want to dismiss him, Legore. It's easy to get hung up on that and forget about situational stuff that could make him valuable.

Justin could return.  He'd probably be great at it if we take the same care of ST that we did last year.  He's not a shifty guy like Sproles or Patton, just a flat out burner.  Give him a hole, he'll squeeze through and be ten yards downfield before the line even knows he's through.

May need to work on receiving skills.  Not bad right now, but with a little practice could be a really good one.

I heard one of the receivers (JUCO I think) we have coming in has 4.3ish speed, and I'm assuming he can catch, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him returning for us this year.

Speaking of which, I caught a glimpse of the playbook for this year.  It's HUGE.  I can't believe Prince expects these kids to learn all those plays.
