i think "sniffing eight wins" means that you have 7 wins before the final game of the season and thus have a chance at 8 wins. but that might be over-analyzing it.

That's the way I read it.  To bad Az is backing down. Also, I believe a bowl game is included in a season.  Perhaps we need further definitions on the terms Az used versus what he *actually meant to say*.
