IMO, there have been three significant turning points for KSU basketball in the past two decades.  One was merely symbolic...the other two were more important.

The first, symbolic turning point was the loss to ku in the regionals in 1988.  The programs, pretty much equals until then, moved in opposite directions following that game.

The second, more direct turning point was passing on Eddie Sutton a couple of years later.  KSU could have had the success that OSU has had for the past 15 years.  Instead, we've had a succession of coaches who haven't gotten us back to that level.

The third, also direct turning point was not getting the Tubby Smith deal done a couple of years after that.  That was a great opportunity to get the program back on track.

A decade later, we're now faced with another golden opportunity with Bob Huggins.  After reading FITZ's article (yeah, I decided to try it out), I agree that it appears that we either have or are going to make a good run at Huggy.  If we get this done, good stuff.

If not, I'm afraid several years down the road we may be looking back and saying, "If only Eddie...if only Tubby...if only Huggy..."

Hell, you've got seven days to cancel before you're even charged.  Don't you?

That should EASILY get you through Huggy's decision.

You can't be racist and like basketball.
I think it all started with a legenday coach retiring in Manhattan.  KSU then hired the prodigal son - the man who would stay at KSU forever and be wildly successful, much like Jack Hartman.

Once Lonnie left for Florida, everyone freaked...KSU couldn't be an "elite" job if people are leaving KSU for greener pastures.  Since then, we have been opting for coaches that really really want the job, rather than making a real effort to hire the best possible coach available.

Hopefully, that will change.

1988 was horrible timing.  K-State, ku, and OU were all peaking at the same time in an 8 team conference, and all playing great at the end of the year.  Sucked that we had to be in the same regional as ku and play them for a FOURTH time that year.

In any case though, Kruger was going to bolt, whether we made the Final 4, won it all, whatever - he was gone soon.  IMO, the Altman hire was the begining of the end.  Interest in the program spiraled downward rapidly from that point on...and it showed that it wasn't just the fans who didn't care when they hired Asbury.

That also happened roughly in conjunction with Snyder's arrival and increased emphasis on the football program.  That didn't help things either.
