How did the Aggies win this game? A&M trailed 17-3 in the second quarter and fell even further behind in the fourth — 27-12 — before Branndon Stewart threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Leroy Hodge and made it an eight-point game. Still, K-State was in control until quarterback Michael Bishop fumbled while trying to gain extra yards for a first down. A&M got the tying touchdown and conversion with 1:05 remaining, and Sirr Parker took a short pass from Stewart 32 yards for a touchdown in overtime for the clincher and the Aggies’ only lead of the day.
2 1996: Texas 37, Nebraska 27
All the Cornhuskers had to do was flick aside 7-4 Texas and they’d be playing against Florida State in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship. Longhorns quarterback James Brown had promised a victory — and he backed it up by converting coach John Mackovic’s gutsy fourth-and-1 call from the Texas 28. The Longhorns held a three-point lead, but Brown’s 61-yard pass to tight end Derek Lewis set up an insurance touchdown.
3 2001: Colorado 39, Texas 37
A victory over the Buffaloes would have sent the Longhorns to Pasadena to face Miami in the BCS title game. But Colorado jumped ahead 36-17 early in the third quarter on Chris Brown’s third touchdown run. Texas quarterback Major Applewhite replaced starter Chris Simms and led a comeback that fell just short.
4 2003: Kansas State 35, Oklahoma 7
The undefeated Sooners were being mentioned with some of the greatest teams of all time. But K-State quarterback Ell Roberson (four touchdown passes), running back Darren Sproles (235 rushing yards) and stout defense ended the Sooners’ dream season.
5 2000: Oklahoma 27, Kansas State 24
On a frosty evening at Arrowhead Stadium, Oklahoma continued its national championship march by holding off the Wildcats in a seesaw game. Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Sooners went on and beat Florida State for the national championship.
6 1999: Nebraska 22, Texas 6
Defense ruled as the Cornhuskers did not allow an offensive touchdown. Defensive stars such as defensive backs Mike Brown and Ralph Brown and linebacker Carlos Polk held Texas to a school-record-low 6 rushing yards.
7 2002: Oklahoma 29, Colorado 7
Running back Quentin Griffin was the offensive star with 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and linebacker Lance Mitchell led a defense that didn’t allow the Buffaloes’ offense in the end zone.
8 1997: Nebraska 54, Texas A&M 15
The Cornhuskers’ dominance helped them in the polls and helped them split the national championship with Michigan. Nebraska’s Ahman Green rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
9 2004: Oklahoma 42, Colorado 3
Freshman running back Adrian Peterson got 171 yards and three touchdowns, and the Sooners defense held Colorado to minus-4 yards rushing.
10 2005: Texas 70, Colorado 3
Quarterback Vince Young completed 14 of 17 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns in the most lopsided of title games.
I have no comment on #1. My bias says that I want #4 higher. #5 was a great game to watch. It's AWESOME to have been in 3 of the Top 5.
