To add further fuel to this Keller mystery:

Koetter, Brand added, also told him that another reason he'd never disclose what Keller did was because "if Sam wishes to transfer, I don't want to say because I don't want him to not be able to transfer. If the other people knew, they might not take him."

Anyway, to make a long story short, Keller got into some legal trouble that was swept under the rug and Koetter found out about after he names Keller the starter.  Apparently, it would have had a negative impact on the program.
