Does ku get a bowl?

Okay this may not be completely accurate, but here's a little analysis:

There are 32 bowl games = 64 teams to fill them.

5 of them are BCS bowls so taking out those 10 teams leaves 54 to fill.

I count 17 non-BCS conference automatic bids....so that leaves 37 available spots.

In the BCS conferences there are 47 bowl-eligible teams.  Since two BCS are likely non-BCS conference teams (Notre Dame and Boise State) that leaves 39 BCS conference teams eligible teams vying for 37 spots.

In the non-BCS conferences there are 25 available teams for the 17 automatic spots.  Remove Notre Dame and Boise St. and that leaves 23 teams vying for the 17 auto spots.  That leaves only 6 non-BCS schools.

So the 39 BCS and 6 non-BCS schools add up to 45 vying for 37 available spots....Looks good for most 6-6 teams to get a bowl.  Now the #'s aren't verified but should be pretty close.

Now for the list of other 18 6-win teams:

-Miami
-South Carolina
-Alabama
-UCLA (possible 7 if they beat USC)
-Arizona
-Minnesota (already accepted Insight)
-Iowa (already accepted Alamo)

-Ok. St.

Wouldn't that just be a slap in the face for the ku program...out of that list, ku has one of the worst followings...last year they had to give tickets out to get students to attend the bowl game.

It's easier than that: all of the conference tie-ins will have conference teams to fill their available slots this year.  With no unused conference tie-in slots there are what, two or three at the most, available at large spots?  Given that all 7+ win teams *must* be taken before any 6-6 team may be selected for those at large slots there's no way ku could get an at large slot.  Their only chance is to bribe the Texas Bowl to take them and leave Okie Lite at home but that's not going to happen.

Yep you're right....assuming the bowl contracts don't have some funny clause in them.  All the bowl tie-ins can be filled.  There's only one at-large spot -> Poinsettia Bowl.  Since ND and Boise St. are likely other two BCS teams...additional conference spots will not open up.  SEC can still fill all tie-ins if they get two BCS and B10 can fill all their tie-ins.

So it looks like the Poinsettia Bowl or beating out Ok. St. for a B12 bowl is ku's only shot.

there are only 2 bowls ku has a shot at when they are not one of the 8 Big 12 teams selected.  Those 2 are the Poinsetta, who likely take a Pac 10 team since it is in San Diego.  The other bowl is the Motor City bowl, and it is very unlikely they want a team from the Midwest when there are other 6-6 teams closer.

Less that 5% chance ku is bowling.

I don't think there's a major conference team with 7+ wins that's going to be shut out of a bowl tied to their conference.  That means that any at large slots are going to go to teams from conferences like the MAC who have 7+ win teams that will otherwise wind up sitting at home.  If the Poinsettia has an at-large slot they're not going to get a Pac 10 team as I don't believe there will be a 7+ win Pac 10 team available to them.

Even though the Poinsettia Bowl has the option to take an at large team and the Motor City Bowl is going to take an at large team because the Big Ten doesn't have enough bowl eligible teams, ku will be far down in the pecking order. One problem is that 7-5 teams have to be selected before 6-6 teams. The Mid-America Conference has 3 bowl tie ins and 4 bowl eligible teams (Ohio, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois) and the Sun Belt conference has two eligible teams (Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette) and one bowl tie in. Ohio, Central Michigan and Western Michigan would have to get picked out of the Mid-America Conference before ku could even be considered.
