I think it's difficult to underestimate the importance of this game on Saturday.  A win would mean an 8-4 record and a second-place finish in the North, and it would reestablish that KSU is *the* football program in the state of Kansas.  It would stick a dagger into the ku football program and pretty much kill what little momentum they claim to have, leaving it dead in the water with Mangino playing out his string for the next year or two.

Everybody knows that we can't have a letdown after that huge win on Saturday.  The fans know this.  The coaches know this.  The players know this.  That being said, it's human nature for these 18-22 year-old kids to look at a struggling ku team after a huge win against the #4 team in the country and to let down their guard at least a bit...to expect an easier game.  Here's hoping that the coaching staff finds a way to get the kids to come out fired up and still riding the momentum from this week.  Perhaps the Vegas underdog card will help.  The fact that it's a rivalry game, on the road, may help with that focus as well.  Let's sure hope so.

ku's offense, while productive, is also inconsistent and turnover-prone.  ku's best play may be the QB choice/zone read...Meier runs the fake very well and has fooled the cameraman, and the opposing defense, several times this season.  It's important to slow down Cornish--he's particularly vulnerable at and behind the line of scrimmage...sometimes takes too long to hit the hole.  ku's receivers are inconsistent, as well...making some nice catches followed by wide-open drops, and don't always run the best routes  The moral of the story is...ku's offense is capable of making big plays, but because they can be inconsistent and don't always protect the ball, if KSU's defense plays with intensity and wraps up, we should be able to make some positive plays on D and get a couple of momentum-shifting turnovers.

ku's defense has some solid players, but they've obviously had their problems this year.  Talib can definitely make the big play, but the secondary has been exposed repeatedly.  If we can get some run game going, and I think we can, it should open things up for the big passing play.

Momentum and emotion will probably be the biggest factors, though.  Although ku plays pretty resiliently, if we could pounce for a couple of early scores and get our defense fired up, we could win comfortably.  If we fall behind, we need to keep in mind that ku's prone to the comeback.  Probably the worst case scenario for us would be a game in which ku is behind by 3 or so for most of the game.  This is where I could see the crowd and desperation/"make a play" factor giving ku a chance for a late drive for a win.  It may be better for the Cats to be down by 3 with 5 minutes left rather than being up by 3.

In keeping with my "realist" stance throughout the season (Which has turned out to be incredibly pessimistic.  4-8?), I'll say that Meier gets injured, but Reesing runs in for a late touchdown to give ku a 24-19 win.   Freeman throws for 1 TD and 2 INT.  Hope I'm wrong (in a good way).

Nice post Baggy "4-8" Slimz.  :)

I just can't help look at that pass defense and not see how we can't light them up for 250+ yards and several scores through the air.  I think we'll run the ball some on them, but we should be able to throw quite a bit as well.  I'm anxious to see how they handle some of the new wrinkles we threw at UT, especially the empty sets and shifting.  I think we have to turn the ball over and make some major mistakes in special teams to lose this game.  Trying not to get too confident, but its hard to see losing this game after the last 3 weeks of football.

And the trick plays.  The nice thing about those trick plays, and the regularity with which we're using them, is that it makes the defense hesitate just a little bit before the d-backs come up to support the run defense.

The Texas game really set up nicely for this game.  We went up against a superior opponent of the type that Prince likes to open up the playbook against...so if nothing else, we gave ku a lot of new looks, as you noted.  As a bonus, we actually beat Texas and a lot of those plays worked spectacularly.  There's a chance that ku keys so much on the pass that we could have a pretty darn good running day against them.

I'm not sure that the ku game will really have that much impact given what happened last Saturday.  If we'd lost to Texas then the ku game would be far more important but Prince has already vindicated his approach to the game and his management of the program.  Nothing that happens from here on out can really lessen the impact of the UT win.

While every game is "huge" if we lose, it isn't the end of the world.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

If given the choice, I would trade the W against Texas for a W against ku.  It's that big.

Losing this game is not the end of the world; however, it can be another vital blow to knocking ku back down.  Over the last couple yearrs we have lost some recruits to them, and I would like to see that stop(atleast for the recruits we actually want).

I think that if we win and can win convincingly, it could really be damaging to ku.  It lets perspective recruits know which program is still the one to play at.

All in all, I just want a win, by one point or by 40, doesn't really matter.  It ku, so thats all that matters.  Plus, denying them bowl elgibility for atleast one more week would be nice.

It's absolutely a huge game for ku.

The thing is, with KSU beating Texas, it puts that much more pressure on ku.

KSU is pretty much all but guaranteed a bowl game now.  ku on the other hand could be left out in the cold if they don't win both the KSU and MU games.

There's also added pressure on ku and Mangino.  If KSU wins, Prince will have halved Mangino's conference win total in 1 year, and won 2 conference road games in his first year.   It took Mangino 5 years to get 2 conference road wins.

I worry about KSU not being to get back up for the game, but unlike Snyder who had a tendency to have the team wound up tighter then a clock spring, I don't see that being the case with KSU.

But then again, Hoax's source may prove that to be all wrong.

Call me crazy, but I get the feeling this particular KSU team is lickin' their chops to try and lay a total ass whoopin' on ku.

Archer, Echols and Co. have led these young guys well...

The team *and* the coaching staff.  Prince had quite a bit to say early on about rivalries and I have a feeling he'd very much like to make a statement in this game.

I think our kids can't wait to get on that field Saturday.  We showed we were not satisifed at all with winning 6 games and become bowl eligible.   You can just tell that our guys are having fun out there.   Our rotations and depth really helped in these last 2 games and i think it will be big in the 4th quarter vs the chickens.

Not really. Losing to #4 UT doesn't get you fired. Losing to ku does. Beating UT was awesome, but beating ku the next week magnifies the win. Beating UT and ku is obviously the best scenario. It can be argued whether it's better to beat Texas and lose to ku or lose to Texas and beat ku.

You're right, a win over a bad football team who is poorly coached and has no fan support is better than winning against the defending national champs in front of the entire country.  What the hell was I thinking?

I used to have a K-State shirt when I was like 8 yrs old, that had a wildcat dressed as a chef flipping a jayhawk in a frying pan and it said: Flippin the Bird!

It really was a great shirt, until my mom realized what it meant and wouldn't let me wear it anymore... :crybaby:

Wish I had it for this weekend!  :ksu:

Didn't expect KSU to beat Texas, but now that we did, we need to beat ku simply for no other reason than we need to show that their only win in 14 years to us was just a fluke.

Of course, they need to beat Missouri after they lose to us so that Mangino can stay around and that will keep us in second place in the North... enough to allow us to show the pundits we're back and keep Nebraska fans nervous.

Awesome!

Though I think the best K-State/ku shirts ever made were the "You can't spell SUCKS without KSU" shirts the ku idiots sported in '04, simply due to the hilarious irony of the shirt and the fact that none of those f*cktards realized it.

    I survived the Dickey/Parrish era.
Damn...the way this thread is heading....I'm just glad we didn't overlook Texas with ku coming up this week!

IMO, the UT game IS the highlight of the 2006 season.  Regardless of what happens this weekend in Lawrence, the victory over #4 on our turf on NATIONAL television is the one game that our season will be remembered for -- even more notable than our upcoming bowl game and far more notable than a WIN or a loss against ku.  The media exposure to the game Saturday night was emmense and will warrant additional national audiences in the coming years.  The first-hand exposure of recruits at the game had to be an enormous edge for us.  We can only hope that we had the right recruits at the game.

Don't get me wrong, a win over ku is important -- but regardless of our performance and final score at the Flaw in the Kaw, the UT game was the 2006 season

The ku game is huge due to the fact that the Texas game has the nation thinking "K-State is BACK", and now they will be watching.  If you go out and follow up with a loss to fuqing ku, it will be dubbed a fluke in the eyes of the rest of the nation, the bowl committees, etc.  If you follow it up with a loss to OU or NU it is one thing, but lose to these queers and it looks horrible.

As good a win as it is to beat Texas, losing to ku is that bad.

What if we beat ku 64-0?  Will you still think the Texas was the highlight of every KSU fans 2006 season?

Beating Texas made this season.  It got us to 7 wins ensuring a bow.  It was on national TV.  It got ABC/Espn drooling over josh freeman.

before texas I would have been crushed if we lost to ku and our bowl hopes hinged on the selection process.

To beat ku now is the icing on the cake.  Results are results, even if they beat us we've had a much better season.  We drastically improved.  Recruits will see that, people in the media will see that.  Nobody will notice if we lose to ku now if we win a lot of people will.

The Texas win was huge for exposure, recruiting, displaying the atmosphere, national perception...all the things that help to legitimize the program nationally and bring in recruits from Texas, Florida, etc.  A loss to ku will label that win nationally as somewhat of a fluke and take some of the steam out of it.  Locally, a win over ku will label their win 2 yrs ago as more of a fluke and will kill the perception of Blue Wings Rising.  I think our staff will have the guys ready to have some fun...after all, this is our last regular season game...nothing more to save it up for.  ku does concern me though.  They run the ball well and I think that is a weakness of our D...particularly if they run it right at us.  I think their D is OK but our passing game the last few weeks really gives me confidence against that.  I think this game will come down to turnovers.  I expect they will make a couple and if we can limit ours, then the game should be ours.  But, if they don't turn it over and we do, on the road, with their bowl lives at stake, we could stall alot of momentum for our program.
