we're gonna have to blitz, like a pack of rabid dogs, from every angle on every play.  I'm concerned if we sit back in that Tampa 2 and allow Texas to complete passes they will.  I don't know if we'll stop the run game without committing alot of bodies at the line.

As far as the initial post goes, Texas obviously far outmatches us talent wise. I think anytime you have such a wide talent gap you're going to have to take a lot of chances and play riskier ball. Such as the gimmick pass play against Louisville.

Of course then you risk getting blown out if the plan falls through, but I'd rather see that than a Callahanesqe effort just to keep it close.

We might see some Bold and Daring in the first half and if all goes bad, then whole lot of conservative and reserved in the 2nd half, kinda like how we stuck to running the ball in the MU game to keep it from getting too outta hand.

OT: but I could not believe that we ran (wasted) one last week, for the reason we did.  Why show that play again, there....

You could show that play in order to make texas spend time preparing for it, also if that play is in their up men's heads and they have to wait a split second to guard it that could be the difference between them breaking a long run or getting stopped inside the 20.

I think we'll do defensively what Raheem seems to like to do...use the Cover 2 as a base to keep things in front of everyone, then sporadically throw in blitzes to try to get the opponents offense out of sequence.  Offensively, I thought they did a really good job last week vs. CU.  I suspect UT will challenge our short passes more aggressively and risk an occasional long ball because 1. they have a potent enough offense that they are going to score some anyway and 2. they think they can get plenty of pressure on Freeman to prevent the long passes from ever being thrown.  At least that's what I'd do if I was the UT coach...hard to say what Mack Brown will do.

On onside kicks; yes, it does make it more difficult b/c UT will prepare for it, BUT that also forces the front of UT's KO return to delay an extra half second to make sure the ball is kicked deep which also takes away from their return.  Since UT has plenty of athletes, doing anything to slow their return game is a good thing.  Its great that we've tried several onsides and been successful b/c it should help our coverage as well. 

On defense; we'll see plenty of the cover 2 we've seen all year b/c you dance with who brought you.  Granted, there will be some tweaks and disguises, and probably more risks b/c we are playing UT, but we aren't going to play a whole different defense or anything.  I don't mind trying to keep them in front and seeing if we can force mistakes.  The key will be winning the ST battle and being efficient on offense.  Do that and let your defense bend but not break and at the worst try to force UT to kick some FGs.  This will be a tough one, but that's probably the formula for an upset.

Oh, I agree we need to hit McCoy.  However, I don't think we sell out blitzes every down and give UT several 2 or 3 play drives.  We do that and UT will put up 40 and we have no shot.  We've got to make them drive the ball, mix blitzes, get to McCoy and force some mistakes.  And all this will be a mute point if we don't stop the run.  UT is tough and their defense is really good, this is just a tough match-up.  While we might have some success blitzing a ton, I don't think that's a formula for anything but a 30+ point loss.

I really believe he was just trying to kill the clock.  In that instance I don't know why you kick the ball 10 yards....Kick the ball 1 yard and stand around it until the ref blows it dead.....that'll kill 4-6 seconds.  Another reason why the clock rules are completely assinine.

And we did end up hitting McCoy, just not on a blitz.  Did a nice job mixing in some blitzes against Snead at times.

Yep, we actually played 'em straight up for the most part.  when we did blitz it was effective.  Makin' 'em use four downs inside the one....gave us a free shot at McCoy....we knew it was gonna be a sneak and popped him but good.

I'm just glad tejas decided to go away from runnin' the ball 'cause they really were movin' us on that read-play.

My thoughts exactly. We couldn't seem to make any open field tackles and Charles was making everyone miss on first contact. I now understand why UT fans pull their hair out over Greg Davis' play calling. We were having trouble stopping the run game. I have no idea why they went away from it.

texas went into panic mode when we got up on them, and abandoned the run.  dumb move on their part, they could have run the ball for 5 yards a pop all day.

prince, franklin, freeman and figurs deserve credit for getting us a lead going into the half, and then never letting up.  after we were up two tds i was terrified we would stop being aggressive and try to burn the clock.

but we kept the foot on the gas, with the only exception being the series with meier under center.

great job coaching, knowing ut could get back in it, and not being satisfied with 35 points.
