Lil Wayne blows. BLOWS.

Everything Kanye West put out before 808s and Heartbreak was great, after Graduation it gets bad real fast.

Best auto-tuned song out right now...

lil wayne does NOT blow.

selling out now tho. but still good.

selling out now?  The guy invented the term "bling bling" for chrissakes.  Not that selling out's a negative.  He's fantastic when he sells out (I'm guessing you mean when he drops a verse for Jay sean or somebody).

since i never listen to the radio, i havent heard much of the LW that most hear.

he prolly sold out awhile back, but i was forced to listen to radio this week and have heard the brunt of it.

kanye started his career as a producer and is universally known as a really good one.  the blueprint.

No one says, "Hey, let's go see Kanye.  He used to be a really good producer."  Which do you prefer:  his rapping or his singing?
doesn't matter, he's certainly known as a producer.  the blueprint. H.O.V.A.  'nuff said, 'gloid.

That may be the case, but it's not what HOVA's known for either.  The point is that Kanye is all about the show.  There's nothing wrong with that.  And there's nothing wrong with blockbuster action movies.

does omaha not have a black station?  I remember rocking out to back that ass up* on a tractor back when I could get power 93.9 out of wichita clearly.   Which was most of the time.

*realized wayne commercialized "drop it like it's hot", there, too.  Damn.  I don't think Lil Wayne could possibly be more fantastic.

Kanye is known for being great and singing/rapping, as well as performing.  He's got substance behind his "show" most action movies lack.  (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is like the Kanye of action movies)

Ok... here it is.

Auto tune will go down in history as generally annoying.  :blank:

Doesn't mean there haven't been a few good tracks where it's been used. These tracks however would have been good jams without the auto tuner. On the flip of the coin, that crappy Kid Rock song would have been just as crappy w/o the auto-tune.

Auto tune works better in an electronic atmosphere like the utlra-rad "One More Time" by Daft Punk. But when it's all said and done it was still pioneered by Cher! CHER people!

I do think it's similar to the voice box phenomenon, but the voice box was not as exploited to such a great extent primarily because the rap/r&b industry didn't exist in order to properly exploit it like only rap/r&b knows how to do. I don't generally like the voice box thing either but it had a couple of bright spots:

and the end of this:

Also...

Even though Jacko didn't play instruments on stage he did play an instrument... actually instruments. Piano, Drums and some guitar. He also wrote and arranged nearly all of his music. He can't really be compared to any current pop acts. I really think the only modern solo acts he could be compared to is David Bowie and Prince... both mainly vocalists who wrote their own music almost exclusively and played instruments on occasion.

That doesn't mean that there aren't a handful vocal artists out there that are true artists and not just glorified karaoke crooners. But in the age of American Idols... I guess we deserve whatever the radio station plays.

And just to fan the flames a little bit. I've always thought Lil'Wayne is irritating and Kanye's stuff is significantly more inspired.

Why you ask?  :dunno:

That's really been what pop music has been since radio was invented.  There's always a few real "talents", but most get by on personality.  Old people just like to yearn for the "good ole days".

i think it's stupid for people to make fun of american idol, they've produced some talent through that show.  i don't see why it matters how someone made it to the radio.

No two ways about it... American Idols is a success story. I'd personally classify all of the talent that has succeeded there as glorified karaoke artists and I really can't think of one American Idol that's hasn't mostly been reduced to awkward celebrity status within a year of winning. Doesn't mean they aren't selling a crap-ton of records... just not to me.

And for the record, I'm amazing at karaoke!

kelly clarkson, while ugly and fat, can sing.  carrie underwood doesn't seem very awkward either.  of course, they aren't as cool as bands like kings of leon   but why does it matter?

Perhaps you're right about Carrie Underwood. I forgot she existed.

Kelly makes feel embarrassed when I watch her. Probably makes me feel different when I hear her sing, but I can't remember any of her songs.

I don't listen to or like either one of them but to call them glorified karaoke singers pretty much undermines any music credibility you were supposed to have...Every path into the music industry is lame, whether its performing at Manhattan Town Center, playing small town Wal-Mart 20 nights a month, or down in Aggieville, musicians have to do whatever it is they have to do to get discovered.  American Idol is just another one of those channels they can use to promote themselves.

Then consider my music credibility undermined. I can deal with that.

Basically, I enjoy listening to, talking about (and disagreeing), and playing and performing music. I like what I like and will not act like I like something that I don't like. Unfortunately for my musical credibility, I think just about every thing that has occurred on American Idol is complete sh*te. If that offends you, it's not intentionally meant as personal attack.

I don't claim to have superior musical tastes but I do have a lot of musical experience. Mostly though, I've just listened to a lot of music... but who hasn't?

You haven't offended me, you've just made yourself look kinda dumb.  No one here is saying the stuff that goes through Idol is great music but they're certainly more than glorified karaoke singers.

At the end of the day you should realize that you don't have to like a musician/group for them not to be "complete sh*te", for them to be more than glorified karaoke singers.  Maybe it's a respect thing.  Really you're coming off with a pretty elitest attitude; especially hypocritical coming from someone who supposedly loves music and that considers themself a musician.
