    shame on you, non-believers
The wifey and I are headed there in a few days. Anyone have suggestions of things to check out other than the obvious (Empire State building, etc.)?

Thx folks.

Cash Cab!  :runaway:

If you are anything like me you will stay away from the trendy clubs/bars and stick to "sweatpants friendly" establishments.

Sbarro's.

cas started a thread about this a while back, see if you can search it out.  otherwise we can start afresh.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

You can't be racist and like basketball.
Anyone have suggestions

stop saying wifey, for starters.  srsly, Ghost of stan parrish, who by all accounts sounds like a fantastic human being would probably give you the best advice.

I remember there being a thread on this so:

 :repost:

But, check out the Metropolitan Museum on the east side of central park. Eat at Tavern on the Green on the other side of central park (very elite place). Visit ground zero, it's kind of surreal. Go to Times Square and Wall Street.

Just to name a few

Go see Rockefeller Center:

I love the smell of peat in the evening.  That smell, you know that earthy smell...  Smells like...whisky !

Go see where Little Italy used to be, which is now just an extension of China Town.

Go to the Village and get a pint of good beer.

Walk through Central Park.

Check out Madison Square Garden and maybe catch a Knicks or St. John's game.

Go eat at the fake orgasm place from "When Harry Met Sally"....have your wife do the thing

Ride the subway everywhere

Have dinner in restaurant where no one speaks english

Catch a show....better yet, go catch a student show at NYU or Columbia (or tons of others).

Go to a comedy club

If you're talking about this thread, you kind of disappeared, clams. I hear you're the resident expert: so how about it? Any must-do non-touristy things? Restaurants (no chains, please)? Neighborhoods we have to hit up?

Thanks in advance.

waks nailed it. see the SOL. A real treat.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Depends on your price range.

The future Mrs. EllToPay and I ate at the River Cafe for dinner in Brooklyn. Very pricey, but you're right on the river and it overlooks downtown Manhattan.

Went there in April. Here are the list of places we ate:

- Carnegie Deli - Good, not great. Huuuuge sandwiches. Very crowded. Seemed like a touristy place.

- Big John's Pizza - Very good. Kind of a hole in the wall place.

- Cafe Ferrara - had breakfast here. best coffee i had in NY.

- Fraunces Tavern - great food, very historic place where george washington met with his troops. i believe gsop recommended this place. can't remember.

- Serendipity 3 - meh. the mrs. wanted to eat here. not bad, not great.

- Tavern on the Green - as i said before, i would not go here. actually, i thought i read somewhere that it was closing. the food was not very good, they shuffled you in and out so they could get more patrons in there. not even that great of scenery.

The fact that you can eat at these two in Las Vegas should tell you all you need to know about their touristyness

Not sure how cool (boozy) your old lady is, but I would definitely recommend doing a Staten Island booze cruise.

Board the Staten Island Ferry at Whitehall Ferry Terminal ( http://www.siferry.com/) and buy a big beer, head up top, take in the views of the city, drink your beer, arrive in Staten Island, finish your beer, exit the ferry, turn right around and board the next departing ferry and buy another beer.

The ferry is free and runs 24/7. It's really a pretty great time, and merely stepping foot on Staten Island (how ever briefly) will give you a much deeper appreciation of the Wu Tang Clan.
