I read that Gill's contract was going to be in the 5 year 10 million dollar range.  So they're paying him 2 million per year making him the second highest paid coach in the North.  Pinkel makes about 2.5, Snyder and Pelini both make about 1.8 and the rest are in the 1 to 1.5 range.

ku over paid Mangino at leat a half million per year.  Now they are going to over pay Gill another half a million compared to what a coach of his experience and track record should make.  Are they just doing this to try and prove they are some kind of a football power?  What was Gill making at Buffalo 500K?  Just because ku pays like they have a good football program doesn't mean they do you think they would have figured that out by now.

Apparently he was making under $200K.

As far as having an account... it's worth the money right now. Most of them are creaming their pants because he "is so well spoken". Then there is WtW.

ku was (over) paying Mangina because they wanted to send a message that they were serious about football.  Looking at this hire, it appears they are only serious about spending money foolishly.

Re: the foolish money thing - I am officially putting my name in the hat for uk's HC job opening. Hell, I will do it for the paltry sum of 1M. I will GLADLY be the lowest paid coach in the Large Dozen to suck at my job.

Good stuff.

It is good stuff.  And he is absolutely right....could be a great hire, who knows?  But, there is NO question that Lew out-kicked his coverage on this.  He's got to be praying that Bill Self gets that team in the Final Four....if not, it's going to be a very long time until next November.

There is a reason that Turner Gill is our new football coach and unfortunately it doesn't have anything to do with resume, record or interview skills.

The simple answer is $.

When Lew Perkins started the internal investigation into mark mangino he believed that enough evidence would arise that he could fire Mark Mangino with cause.  By doing this he would not be forced to pay Mark Mangino the 6.6. million dollars.  As the investigation ended very little substance came out as a result.  Some unsettling and unpleasant incidents were uncovered, but nothing of substance.  Nothing that warranted firing Mark.

Its for that reason that the two men and their lawyers agreed on a settlement.  Mark got paid 4.2 million dollars.  This angered the big pocketbooks that fund the athletic department (read Dana Anderson) that Mark was getting paid so much money and the way that Lew Perkins handled the ouster of Mangino.

10+ days later Lew Perkins found his man.  He knew the number he needed to get to....2.8 million.  Lew approached the men to make that happen.  He didn't get the response he thought he was going to get.  He was unable to afford Harbaugh, Tuberville, or even Fedora.

Lew for the first time in his tenure ran into a brick wall while trying to raise the money needed to make his "splash" hire.  We didn't have the $.  The university was forced to let our true targets go.  We made an economic hire.  Turner Gill was making under $200,000 this year.   To give you an idea how low that is...the lowest paid coaches in the Big 12 make 1.1 million.

We were forced to take the guy that we could afford.  This is all thanks to Lew Perkins handling of donors and Mark Mangino.  Your "trust in lew, trust in lew" backfired beyond possible thought.  The man has botched the last month worse than anybody (including even me) could possibly imagine.  We went from hiring a man that was going to make 2.8 million dollars to a guy that will probably make 900,000.  We hired the only guy that would take the job for that little money.

-----

We have taken a huge step backwards.  We went from having the 4th highest paid coach in the big 12 to being the 12th highest salary.  The reason for that is that Lew has lost his donors.

None of this is an attack on Gill.  He is a huge gamble.  It may pay off....fact is his resume does not warrant a big 12 job, but he was the only man that we could afford.   Its been a very sad month for Kansas Football fans....it can be squarely placed on the shoulders of Lew Perkins.

Edit: I don't head over there very often, but wow....lots of STFUs and personal attacks on WtW.  Amazing how strong the groupthink is.

Why did Mangino settle for $4.2 million when he had Perkins by the short and curlies?

Makes no sense.

Why not the full $6.6 million?

hilarious read, thanks

knew lew was due for a reality check.  first the gridiron club, now this.  its so sweet to see that ego maniac get sit down after what had been a pretty good run (OB, avoiding major sanctions, keeping seff).
