His contract for this year, or the remaining amount on his contract?

That dude has gone full retard over the past two weeks.  If he was paid in full, we would have fired him and laid it on the table.  Most likely we gave him half and allowed him to save face by resigning.  Guys who "resign" never get the full amount

maybe this way Mangino doesn't sue the University?

Sue them for what though?  The university isn't responsible for the statements of former players.  There were three ways this could have gone down;

1) Mangino resigns on his own, gets nothing
2) ku fires him, and he gets the full amount.  The key being that we fired him
3) ku and Mangino meet in the middle, come to agreement, and Mangino can "resign" to save face.

Resigning does not = saving face.  It equates to admittance of guilt in this case.  Saving face would have been forcing Lew's hand.  I think they paid MM all of it (and maybe more).

If they would have tried to fire him for cause and not paid his contract he would have sued and won.  That could have potentially gotten ugly for ku.   Mangino would have had nothing to lose and there is no question he has dirt on ku.  There was some kind of settlement but it was closer to full then it was half.

Thing is . . . some in Tardville act like ku couldn't possibly be held cupable for some of the stuff that Mangino supposedly did . . . it's pretty common knowledge that Lew and staff were, as they say, keeping a file, you know the old smoke and fire thing . . . and they were just biding their time until Mangino hung himself.

ku buys Mangino's silence, pays the guy off, he quietly resigns with a simple press release, no press conference, no questions, no nothing . . . ku gets to claim it's a personnel matter therefore they can stave off FoIA requests et. al.

I agree that the university could held culpable, but the only problem with this idea about the silence is that he would hang himself for any potential lawsuits by bringing up the things that he did.  Everything a former player could sue the university for, they could just as easily name Mangino in the suit.  The difference would be that Mangino would have already hung himself, while the case against the University would have to be proven.  Its not in Mangino's personal or legal interest to air dirty laundry.  His lawyer wouldn't be that dumb.  They paid him somewhere between $2-$4 million, let him walk away "on his own terms", and put the issue to rest.

Well we may find out.  The LJW has filed an open records request through the FOIA.

hill . . . nice effort, but you left out the stuff that Mangino probably has in his hip pocket against ku.  Nobody like Mangino gets pushed out in a witch hunt without playing some nastyball back.

Agree with Chin, he probably pulled down about $5 to $5.5 million.

Going from vowing to "die on his feet" and denying doing anything wrong to quietly stepping aside without saying a word is not what someone who didn't get a ton of money would do.

This. You don't think Mangino has some dirt on the athletic department at ku?
They pay him a hefty chunk of money, he agrees to 'resign,' and also agrees to keep his lips sealed.

Amazing how fast they forget that this program was very recently on probation.

let's call a spade a spade here- lew set the fire and mangino was at the stake.  if i were mangino, i would sue if lew tried to fire me for the crap that has come up in the public forum since lew's witchhunt began.  unless of course i was paid not to.

career suicide, he would never work again and be looked down upon by everyone associated with collegiate athletics- something that I think means a lot to mangino is how his peers look at him, he's worked his way up from a very small place and i seriously doubt he would do anything to destroy the rather large niche he's carved out for himself in the college football world.

IMO, this will keep good coaches from coming, more than anything (i.e. chitty program w/ no good players, crapty stadium, lateral move for most).  Who wants to work for an @sshole like that, regardless of the money.

Plus, Lawrence is basically the worlds biggest flea market  :flush:

If they could sue Mangino, they certainly could also sue the University.  Mangino is an employee of the University.  Like when the mailman hits someone with his truck, you don't sue the mailman you sue USPS.

I don't know why I even responded to this. . . just a dumb comment

I bet we find out soon due to the open records act. the media is sueing to have both the payoff and investigation to be made public and there is precedence for this coincidently with perkins when ku tried to keep his compsensation package a secret a few years ago.

ku could have fired him with cause and won IMHO, but the costs and smear of the lawsuit and media would have been bad.

I can't imagine they will win keeping the details of the investigation and settlement private.

I think it goes back to what Mangino knew about the University and their fear of putting him in a position where he had nothing to lose more than any hassle that would have come from a fire with cause lawsuit.

Things like the Morris tape.

My line of thinking is that whatever number is found as the settlement is likely only half or less than half. They'll find a way to hide the money so the ignorant folks can't put the pieces together.
