So, it's become obvious that Lew is directing the release of information and smear campaign in order to make the firing or forcing out of Mangino occur with less backlash from the fan base.  So far, so good.  Where he may have overshot his mark, though, is dragging Mangino through the mud to the point that he is untouchable to another program down the road.  This is messing with the guy's whole future.  Does Mangino air the dirty laundrey on the ku program and its administration now?  Clearly he has no further allegiance to the University and has plenty of motivation to take them down with him.  :dunno:

Lew is in damage control mode and going to give Mangino a graceful way out with his contract buyout.  It won't work, Perkins has already used WAY too much force to get Mangino out, hurting ku as much as Mangino.

You can't be racist and like basketball.
All I want is a Mark Mangino driveway press conference.

    I survived the Dickey/Parrish era.
Fats eluded to the release of information coming from the university in an interview earlier today, but stopped short of saying anything about a growing conspiracy.  He's chosen to deflect the criticism as "normal coaching" and continues to maintain that he did nothing wrong.  The (un)fortunate thing is this can't just go away.  With what has been made public, the university can't just do nothing.  And, because Mangino didn't throw punches in the early rounds, any last-minute bombs by him will only be seen as retaliatory.

It would be difficult for me to imagine that Mangino has anything, anything at all, that would save his job -- moreover, it's doubtful that he has anything at all that would take down the uk athletic powers (he would have already used it to squash the investigation).

Unfortunate for Mangino (and for us who hate uk), this is nothing but another blip on the radar in Lawrence.  He's gone; they'll hire someone from the outside; bball will continue to dominate contribution$.

What I do love about this entire thing is how the uk fan-base has boasted on their (supposed) success under Mangino.  In uk football history 2002 to 2009 will now be a vacuous void.  References to a pre-purchased Orange Bowl appearance will forever be identified with a big fat asterisk the size of a exploding dwarf star.

Good post and agreed ameroogie.  No chance of salvaging a job.  I am talking about pure retaliation.

I don't think he has any ammunition.

He could use Lack of Institutional Control, but uk self-reported on the incidents that led to that slap on the wrist.

He's clearly not been the favorite child over there and would doubt that he's actually met Bill Self in person.

If he had anything at all on Lew, he would have used it by now.

What's the fable about the guy who flew too close to the sun?  Imagine that and then visualize the crater Mangino would leave when he hit the earth.  Lawrence will be saved given the Teflon dome that covers the university.

Don't be so naive as to think he isn't fully aware of goings on in and around the university that would slit the throat of the athletics programs.  Now, he may be cutting his own throat in the process but, if Lew has already done that for him, what's the harm. :dunno:

IMHO, he's got nothing that he can use (that he wasn't involved in) that would carry any weight [bad pun, but I already typed it].

If he did:

1) He would have already used it to quash the events of this week in Lawrence.
2) He would have passed it along to others with influence ($$$) to disseminate and save his job.

We already know from history (and very recent history) that uk does not care a crap about their football program.  Unless Mangino has a picture of Bill Self tea-bagging Cole Aldrich (I believe a ladder would be required), there isn't any damage that can be done (in retaliation or otherwise) to uk athletics.

Mangino is a narcissist, anyone that has heard any of his press conferences knows this.  He won't be able to keep his mouth shut, even if his buyout requires such.

That's anatomically correct and well evidenced, but I question whether he has anything to say that would leave more than a small scratch on Lew's ass.

If he had any info on stuff that could be seriously detrimental to ku then I'm sure he's already tried to hang that over Lew's head.  If he gets fired he might have some stuff to take a couple cheap shots w/ but I can't see it being anything that significant.

Could be an excellent time for Mangino to remind Lew that he's fully aware of the thousands of dollars paid out by some folks to keep certain hardwood athletes in Lawrence and not moving on.  (amongst many, many things).

you're damn right.

people are wrong to assume that all this is happening because of ku's horrible record this season.  there's one reason for it and one reason only.  mangino's boys f*cked with Lew's moneymaker, the basketball team, just one too many times.  there's no way that Lew is going to let anything screw up ku's cash cow and smear the ku basketball name.  later mang, shoulda kept your team in check.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

Mangino is becoming a martyr.  Lew should have pulled the trigger today.

The longer this goes on, the worse it gets for everyone...except for Mark.  He's got nothing further to lose at this point.

If MM ever wants to work again, supposing he can still find a job with what already is happening, there is no way he can retaliate, though I believe he would love to.

The timing is horrible. If lew were a true professional he would have waited until the end of the season and then quietly terminated mm if that was what he wanted to do. They always say any press is good press but I am not convinced this fiasco is going to be positive for ku's football program.

    The very best.
This is why we need to hire back MM. He's our friend now.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

    Hey, basketball!!!
Would be hilarious that if on the way out something breaks out between those two and magically they have baseball bats in their hands and like in Step Brothers they hit each other at the same time in the head with the bats and both go unconscious.

Lets hope we can all sit in our favorite recliner, put our feat up with a bowl of popcorn, and watch a controversy unfold. Maybe Mangino can try to bring down Self with him.

Is anyone else stunned by how fast and furious this has come to the forefront?  Just watched sportscenter and they had 2 or 3 players with quotes.  Unbelievable how chicken shart it is.

And a player formerly coached by Mangino at Kansas State told ESPN's Shelley Smith that he had a run-in with him in 1996, when Mangino was the Wildcats' running backs coach.

So who's this? I'm going with Mike Lawrence. He sold me a car when I was in college and he had nothing positive to say about his experience at K-State. Seemed like a whiner.

There is no way Mangino keeps quiet for much longer.  He knows this was his one and only shot at a head coach gig, so no need to worry about making any future employers wary of hiring him.  If he's smart he will wait at least until the buyout check clears the bank, then come out with guns blazing.
