Great personal coach abuse stories here.
Makes me recall my high school tennis days and a particular encounter with a foreign doubles team from MHS. My partner and I had run into these showboats a couple time on the junior USTA circuit. Real flashy, like a lot of foreigners are. State was around the corner so this was a pretty important match. Well we took a one set lead, ground strokes were clicking and my partner's serve was over powering these guys. Wasn't even close, bageled them in the first. We started goofing off a bit, aiming for their crotches on overheads, swatting each other with towels during the change overs, games with the Gatorade etc. Well, Manhattan High fought back and won the second set. Took game seven on ball that was clearly in, but we got hooked. So, we go to a third and we could both tell coach was getting irate. Pacing around, fuming, getting real angered up. We end up in a tie-break in the third and on match point, my partner tries to hit a drop shot from mid-court for no apparent reason that clips the top of the net and rolls out. Coach proceeds to storm on to the court, rips both raquets out of our hands, wraps them around the net post, and huffs the shattered remains into the parking lot. All the while going off on like a five minute obscenity filled tirade about how tennis players from Johnson County don't bus into flyover country and lose to a school like Manhattan High. How we "made an ass out of him" and if it happens again "how he was really going to put a show on for these people". Well we were pretty much in shock, but coach later apologized to both of us when we took our team shower together afterward. Message sent, though.
Needless to say, two weeks later we won State. And we never lost another high school match to a couple foreigners again.
