they have better players.  kstate has the better coach.  we'll just have to see how it shakes out.

mods, can we pin this thread?  might save the thread starters time throughout the next several months just to keep the "the media hates us" threads at the top of the forum?

well - then who cares about players anyways, when you have great coaching you can do anything!

Well, we did lose to WSU.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

How long will we have to be a consistent upper half big 12 team before our fanbase will get their bearings on how basketball works and how our talent actually matches up in comparison to the rest of the conference?

no, isu has some good players.  more than just one.  gilstrap is probably going to get an nba chance.  probably the only other nba talent, but they have other guys that can be better than average ncaa players.  basically their entire frontcourt is better than ksu's.

I've never seen Gilstrap play - he's never played in the Big 12 right? I see he had a big year in Juco last year, but you would seriously rate a 3-start Juco above Judge & Kelly?

kelly and judge have never played in the big 12 either.  kelly was a miserable failure in his 2 years attempting to play d1.  judge is several years younger than gilstrap and pretty much unanimously well behind kelly according to the kstate coaching staff.  how would you rate either of them above gilstrap?

oth, i didn't argue that gilstrap was better than kelly or judge (though i'm certainly not claiming he isn't, either).  just that their front court as a unit (gilstrap, brackins, dendy, vanderbeeken, hamilton) is substantially better than kstate's (kelly, judge, colon, jhenr, samuels).

isu has some very good players.  their biggest problem is that most of those guys basically play the same position, and their guards either suck or are unproven.  you could make an argument that their best five guys are all hybrid 3-4s (the 5 listed above, minus hamilton plus staiger).  weird team.

Sys, don't forget your original comment:

"they have better players.  kstate has the better coach.  we'll just have to see how it shakes out."

Your basing that off of Brackens, and a juco guy you've never seen play.

Our backcourt is probably one of the top 2-3 in the league.  Talent and depth.  Clearly superior to ISU.

Our frontcourt is unproven.  But, we have great upside.  Samuels looks good, Judge is a McD All-American, Colon is huge, Kelly could be very good.  ISU has brackens.  And Gilstrap is just as unproven as Kelly.

yeah, that comment was partly facetious.  i only turned serious later in the thread.

ISU is a team I wonder about.  When Brackins decided to come back you start thinking they could be pretty damn good.  But then you start thinking why were they so bad last season with a player of his caliber?  If Gilstrap is legit then I would think they can be pretty solid but they really didn't get much love from the coaches picked 8th in the preseason poll even thought they voted Brackins first team and Gilstrap newcomer of the year.   Should be interesting to see how they do still kind of amazed that Brackins came back for another year.

I really like your insight, and I had never really looked at ISU's talent.

I'm not expert, but here's why I would rate Kelly & Judge higher than Gilstrap. It basically has to do with their ceiling.

Kelly... I understand the legitimate concerns on Kelly, and Winn's article was a little disconcerting (what a great article, btw). Still, Frank has said Kelly has been playing like "a pro" through most of his preseason practices. Frank's preseason assessments have proven to be pretty good so far (i.e. Clemente "fastest player baseline to baseline" and Beasley "as polished in HS as Durant" - both of these comments were questioned at the time). I don't think Kelly's issue has really been his talent, and I do think a change of scenery will help him.

Judge... Gilstrap is most likely a better player than Judge today, but its mainly due to Judge lacking experience against higher level competition. Judge is going to be in a good role this season - he's not expected to be the savior or even the go-to scoring threat. He'll be able to develop. And Judge's athleticism is elite. Again, I trust Frank's assessments and he compared Judge's potential to Amare Stoudamire (on Soren's show).
